  1. To SB_Jim:

Swann may send a fan or a power supply as a good will measure. They might be concerned about liability too ! Try it if you like.

For the time involved, I would unplug and disassemble the power supply to test (voltmeter, A/C or D/C) the incoming voltage. Then measure the size (?40mm X 40mm X 10mm?) and check Amazon for a similar sized fan and connector.

    They have many below $15.

  2. Yes the 960 system is inferior now. 1080P must be seen to be appreciated. This analog system give 85% of what an IP system can give for 1/3 the price. This $699 Costco/ lorex Model #LHV16212 1080P system uses the BNC 59 connectors if your wiring is decent (copper) quality:

    $699 http://www.costco.com/Lorex-16-Channel-HD-Analog-DVR-with-2TB-HDD%2c-12-1080p-Cameras-with-130'-Night-Vision.product.100220740.html

Link to video of 720P (1080P is even better) system on youtube:

My local Costco has the 8 channel version ($499) of this on active display so see if yours does to see and touch it.

*** If you get this the fan needs replaced at $6 ***

*** $8 fixed lenses are available to change zoom up to (16mm) X4. ***

  3. Generally replacing a computer fan is easy, cheap and fast. It's a shame that more people do not look into it and aren't aware that the fix is so easy.

Since the Lorex system gives so much for the money otherwise, it's foolish to not fix the fan problem for both the Lorex company and their customers.

  4. Here is video from a Costco 1080P BCN59 system.

The zoom camera is in the expensive system. There is an 8 camera stand alone system with these same cameras at Costco for $499. My local Costco has that system in stock and on display.

These are the "analog style" BNC59 cameras, IP cameras are more money. By all means insist on 1080P as a minimum.

  5. If your Lorex dvr/ nvr fan matches the 5V first picture Lorex%20dvr%20loud%20fan%20fix%20-%20$5.59

you can replace it with this 12V fan. It is $5.59 plus (free for prime) shipping.

Remove the integral fan with the 3 tiny screws between the blades. Be sure to remove the old fan. Most people will need to buy a

small enough philips screwdriver to remove these screws. For the wire connections (just black and

red) either splice in the colors to the old connector or realign the pins in the new fan as shown as

you desire. I used screws for my accessory box, I believe they are 1440 machine screws.

I did this in July 2015 for 2 of my son's systems and it cools well and is very quiet.

  6. Here is a pic of the fan attachment. I removed the old fan and screwed the new one right to the heatsink with machine screws. Make the red and black wires oriented as shown. You can splice the old fan's connector or switch the yellow and black wires on the new fan connector to end up as shown.

For the lenses, a drop or two of carburetor cleaner on the glue with a q-tip softens it for removal. The lenses just screw out and screw in for correct focus.

  7. If your wiring is Siamese BNC59/ 12v you should be able to use your old wiring. YMMV

You will be delighted by the video and night vision quality over the d1. The biggest complaint I've seen on various sites is the fan on the dvr can be noisy. I got a whisper quiet ball bearing replacement for $4.79 from Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002OFL1J8?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00

I also found ~$6 zoom lens replacements at 8mm, 12mm, and 16mm which gives fantastic facial recognition up to 80ft. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007Q8IHKE?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00

  8.

My boy got this exact system and is very pleased. His neighbor also bought one the next day and got the Lorex PTZ camera for it. The DVR takes a standard harddisk and fan. The cameras use 3.6mm lenses easily changed to zoom (~4X) up to 16mm for good ID up to 80 feet.

Here is a youtube video of the 16 channel version at only 720p with the PTZ in the lower left corner. Notice it is set up to tour.

  9. I have an older DVR with D1 being the highest record resolution available. I plan on buying 2 to 4 cameras to use with this DVR. Would I benefit from buying 850-900 TVL cameras or would I be wasting money since D1 is the highest record resolution?

    Thanks for helping.

850~900 TVL are for recent analog cameras, priced below U$20 at most, but with its quality a lot improved. You have D1 -DVR already. Just buy and plug new analog cameras. Why spending money? If you go for HD, then you have to buy everything new, including HDD and decent monitors.

I'm going to try to not be too ignorant. In 2015 putting up a FREE 960h camera is questionable when a $500 8 camera system in 1080p is available. Spending any money on a 960h system is at best foolish. It will only confirm a problem/theft existed and identify no one.

Further, on my system I added $8 lenses (6mm to 16mm, ir coated, 12* .05mm thread) from amazon to get excellent face and license ID up to 100ft and it was already good!

You will be wasting money...how much are you spending on the cameras...remember that a complete new system that will run on your old cable with but produce 1080p images is only 400...will blow away your old system.

    http://www.costco.com/Lorex-8-Channel-HD-Analog-DVR-with-2TB-HDD%2c-8-1080p-Cameras-with-130'-Night-Vision.product.100218592.html

Ditto ... My boy got that system for 499 (399 sale ends 10/25/15 - don't let that stop you) and was ticked pink. It's so good he bought one for his other home the next day and a neighbor got one too! It uses the BNC59 connector (and wires) that likely came with a 960h system. It is 1080p with excellent day and night vision outdoor cameras. Your 4 cameras will probaply cost you more that the Lorex 8 camera system.

Here is a link a youtube example 16 camera 720p (half of the 1080p) system with a pan tilt 12x zoom camera.

  11. My boy bought this setup for $499 and couldn't be more pleased! His neighbor liked it so much he joined Costco to buy this system the next day. This is a real steal at $399. You get about 85% of the features an IP system gives you for 1/2 the money or less.

The cameras accept replacement lenses from the stock 3.6mm (5 to 15 ft) to zoom with 12mm (40 to 60 ft) 16mm (60 to 80 ft) that we got from amazon for $6 to $8 each. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006SX31AY?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00

  12. I don't mean to butt in, but with that fantastic guarantee service why not see if one of Costco's offerings will work? You certainly won't get better service.

They have an 8 camera 1080p analog system for $399 right now that can use ethernet cables with "baluns" on the ends or of you prefer various 1080p IP systems starting at $799 for an 8 channel 4 camera system.

  13. Try the old 1024 X 786 monitor or change the resolution to same for an immediate and definite answer.

The computer does look more than capable, but that check should take less than 1 minute.

Make sure your system is 64bit (it probably is) and try (ugh) Internet Explorer as the viewer. Firefox has been limiting flash lately and Microsoft's active x is often the default player for a lot of security camera viewing.

  14. Zoom for the Lorex LHV828.

    The lenses I picked worked for 80 to 100 ft ID! I got mine from Amazon for < $7 each. Here are their general specs;

IR board lens Product Name: CCTV Lens; Image Format: 1/3"

    Mount: 12 * 0.5mm; Focus Length: 16mm, 12mm Aperture: F2.0; Angle of View: 21 Angle Dimension: 14 x 13.4mm(H*D); Color: Black

With 16mm it gives about a 4x zoom on this system and camera. It could read a license plate in daylight at 100 ft and a person filled half of the screen height. Just remove the glue with a drop of carb cleaner, screw out the old lens and screw in the new one until you get focus. I also ordered 12mm and 25mm to experiment more. That 12*.05mm thread is a key requirement.

  15. How many newcomer mistakes am I making?

The hikvision varifocal GW788HDSDI arrived today. The boy's DVR is in another city. N/ADoes adding a BNC to RCA adapter for tv viewing really work?N/A I was going to test the camera by using a male BNC to male RCA and attaching it to the tv component video input via the cameras yellow analog output. I got no signal. I know the 12V is working because the IR lights up in the dark.

** pleasant update 3:00AM here** The 12V supply I was using only put out 9.5V. A proper 12V supply allowed the varifocal to work with the yellow analog connector for preliminary adjustment. The green HDSDI plug shows no signal.

  16. I started with no info on cctv and found lots of great information here. Thank you all.

My son got the Lorex LHV828 1080p over coax from Costco and wants a solid view of the end of the driveway and walkway about 80 ft away.

My question is where to get a lens for a Lorex lhv2521 camera. It's stated specs are a 3.6mm f2.1 fixed lens for a 1/2.7" sensor. We think we want a 9mm or 12mm lens. I have found lenses for 1/3 and 1/2 sensors, but no 1/2.7 lenses. Can I use one of these sizes?

I also ordered a hikvision varifocal GW788HDSDI to see if it will work with the DVR even in the analog mode.
