Visible light almost always beats IR. Only go IR if you have a really good reason... because it's going to cost you 10x the expense to go IR, compared to visible-light floodlights.

Some of the Mobotix stuff does that out-of-the-box. But as another poster pointed out, sometimes you want the PIR to be separated from the camera for optimal function. In that case, you can attach the PIR to an I/O port on the camera, and have it email you when triggered. Beats the hell out of video motion detection when it comes to false alerts too.

Depending on what kind of network you have, you might have to be creative. If you want ALL the traffic, you'll need to put an old-fashioned hub in between your target, and the network, then hook your sniffer machine to that hub. Hubs repeat all packets to all ports. Alternatively, you can overflow or poison the ARP cache on a switched network and get the data that way.

That's right. It seems to me that this project is about power, and storage. The camera is easy. Power is supplied by buried batteries. Other than having to hump them up there on foot, that's not such a big deal (but batteries are HEAVY in a backpack). If you use the appropriate sensor package, storage won't be a problem, since you won't be filling up your SD card or SSD drive with junk images. Using video-motion-detection is a no-go. I'd go PIR + recording input.

You're not going to get much in the way of an IP megapixel camera for $150. Certainly not something outdoor-rated... think 3x that and you're starting to get there.

Yep. Wiremold would probably look better. Conduit is sometimes a little too "industrial" for a residence. For interior work, you can often hide wire behind crown molding.

I like the look of it... nice install for somebody who doesn't do that kind of work for a living. And who cares what your neighbors think? They probably wish they had something like it on their house... and the first time something happens, they'll come right to you for pictures. My system saved my neighbors some trouble when it ID'd a bunch of teens vandalizing their yard. They've been big fans ever since.

You're losing 3-4 cameras every year? To what? Heat? For that kind of money, I'd start installing fans on them or something... that's nuts.

Looks to me like they wired the camera directly into the video-in on the flatscreen. Is that the "illusion of security?" If that video isn't being recorded anywhere, what's the point?

Other posters are correct. Do NOT use video-motion-detection to send you alerts. PIRs are MUCH more reliable. And some cameras actually include them (the Axis M-series, Mobotix, etc). Highly recommended
