IP cameras - Cat 5 or Cat 6 cables?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

For a standard Dauha 16 channel NVR system. Does it matter if I use Cat 5 or Cat 6 cables to use with the 3mp, 1080p cameras?

-Are there specific types of ethernet cables for outdoor use?

CAT5, CAT5E or CAT6 will all be OK if installed to standard.

For outdoor cables there are two specific considerations, UV resistance and mechanical protection.

I bought this from Amazon for $117 + shipping: Cable Wholesale CAT5E, CMXT Outdoor / Direct Burial, Waterproof Tape, 350MHz, Solid, 24 AWG, Black, 1000 ft, Spool

i don't know how good it is or how long it will last above or underground. Maybe someone knows. It doesn't have the goo of the other underground ethernet cable. It is shielded so hopefully the high-power lines behind my house won't affect it above ground.
