UTP vs. Coaxial for a PTZ camera

Recommended Posts

I'm installing a cyberdome PTZ that will run off a geovision card..

It's my understanding that I can use UTP wiring or coaxial. Running either wire is just as easy for me.

What is the advantage and disadvantage of each?

Thanks

A lot depends on the distance your dome will be from the Geo. Coax is just fine for most distances up to 750' and is less expensive. Just make sure you use copper braid copper core coax only. Do not use aluminum no matter how fancy it is.

you would also get better quality and no risk of interference if using Cat5 with an 'amplified' receiver, but it will cost much more than using coax. Ofcourse you could also use amplifiers for coax also. I wouldnt bother with cat5 unless you are using active recievers, otherwise just use coax up to 750', or if you want to be sure there will no interference issues, then cat5/UTP would be prefered, passive is okay to 750' and cost less than active, but still more than just using coax. Depends what the client can afford.

I just confused myself with that post, im going to shut up now!
