  1. hi there Does anyone have any experience of buying any 4cg H.264 cards off ebay successfully? For example: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/8CH-Video-Audio-H-264-DVR-Card-240FPS-TECHWELL-6802_W0QQitemZ400020507527QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CCTV?hash=item400020507527&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1301%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318 Generally what are they like? Software/Compatability ok or lots of blue screens of death etc with XP? I bought some uhf walkie talkies from HK a couple of years ago and I've been absolutely delighted with them, so I'm happy to take a punt on some of this stuff. Dude

cams with IR leds built in

I have low level bulkhead lights with energy saving bulbs. Rather than deterring crims, they use the light to rummage around. I think it helps them. My view is once they rummage unhindered they keep coming back. The other disadvantage of LEDs around the lens is that it says "hi I'm a working security camera, please hide from me or vandalise me". On one of my non-working cams, i found that thieves had tried to steal it. They'd unscrewed the bottom two screws but the top two were too tight to undo! Dude

Many thanks, any ideas where I could get a C/CS 850nm filter with a screw thread please? Best Dude

cams with IR leds built in

hi there I've tried several cams with IR built in, around the lens. I'm finding them approaching hopeless since the IR illuminates dust, rain and fog near the lens. I have not tried, but I imagine this rules out any sort of motion detection software altogether. Is the better solution to keep the illumination separate, away from the near field of the lens? Many thanks Dude

number plate camera for night use

Excellent, thank you. Re. the auto-iris, are most cams these days built with them in? Also could I ask what you mean by a "box" cam? I think I can get hold of the 850nm bandpass filter no probs, it's just the auto-irising cam that may be a prob. Could you give me any examples please? What sort of TVL would you suggest and am I still after a day/night cam? I don't mind using a separate cam for daylight. Incidentally I have since found specialist cameras for about 1300 UKP which are a bit beyond my budget. Thanks again. Dude
  6. Hi there greetings from the UK, newbie here. I'm wiring 16 hi-res day/night analogue cams across a farm into a GV-2008. Mains is available near each cam so supply isn't a problem. I'm considering coax or CAT5. How many cat 5 cables would I typically need to use for the final run to the pc assuming 16 600TVL cams? I take it there's a general move away from coax towards cat5??? Are the cheap baluns on ebay from China crap? (I assume so Can I use a 4-way balun per cat 5 cable and not lose quality? Many thanks Dude

    GV-800 frame rates

hi there I'm looking at buying a GV-800 120fps card. I see they come in 4, 8 and 16 cam versions. I assume (?) that the 8 and 16 cam version is 1 card plus either one or two extender cards. If this is the case, I suspect the max frame rate will drop as the base card is extended. Is this true? ie Will I only get 120/16 fps max for the 16 channel card? Since the 8 channel card is almost double the price of the 4 channel card, if the max frame rate is halved then it seems sensible to simply buy two x 4 channel cards. Any thoughts please? Cheers Dude

    GV-800-4cam, GV-800-8CAM

hi there I'm installing an 8 cam system (may need 16 in future) and am looking at the GV-800. It's advertised at 120fps. Am I right in thinking that the GV-800-4cam system provides 30fps max per channel, the GV-800-8cam 15fps per channel etc? The 8 cam card is approx. double the cost of the 4 cam card, so I'd be a bit surprised if it were the case. But if it is the case, I suppose I'm better off buying 2 x 4 cam cards and getting 30fps all round. The 16 channel card is only slighly more expensive than the 8 ch card, which made me think in the first place about the frame rate slowing down. Any feedback appreciated. Also is it worth going for the gv-2008 if the pc is quite well specced with no other apps running apart from the GV card? Cheers Dude
  9. hi all I'm looking for a weatherproof high resolution camera for day/night use to capture vehicle number plates against headlights. I've tried a few cams but they are simply dazzled by the headlights. So good illumination and compensation are probably the key. I can spend up to 800 USD per camera. I appreciate there are dedicated number plate cams around but they're 900 UKP here (about 1400 USD) each. Can I not get a slightly cheaper non-specialist cam that will do? I do not want to feed the output into any automatic recognition system. I just want something I can record and then examine manually. I plan to use the Geovision NV 2008 card or similar. Many thanks Dude
