Bullet cameras are much more of a risk than the cable. My neighbor had bullet cameras at his auto lot and the burglars would use a long stick to aim them at the sky.

The listing of Avigilon Editions is posted at http://avigilon.com/products/video-surveillance/avigilon-control-center/editions/ The "# of concurrent server connections" for Standard is 24. Is this the number of servers that a client can monitor? Was this number increased since the release of 5.x? I seem to recall this number was once 3. Best, Christopher

Avigilon rolled out a new app for Andriod. Now, the the phone tries to connect using https and then after a long pause, gives a warning for each server. I then click OK several times so that each server then connects to http. The wait is painfully long. Is there a way to avoid this delay and automatically connect to http? Best, Christopher

In that case I'm guessing that Hik is aware of the potential problem of too many files in a single folder and have implemented the solution.

Does Hik automatically create new folders based on date? When I first attached Axis cameras to a NAS the cameras did not have this feature. When the number of files (images) in one folder became large, the file system was so slow it was virtually unusable. Later Axis added this feature to the firmware and it was possible to create new folders on the fly based on date and time so that each folder had a manageable number of files. Best, Christopher

Hik may have the feature, don't know, but Mobotix was designed with a number of unique features including better standalone support than typical surveillance cameras. It's also at a higher price point which often means more features compared to compares at a lower price point.

In the Avigilon software. I can relate. My first system was a DIY with Axis cameras writing directly to the NAS. I soon realized that writing directly to the NAS would not meet my requirements, so I switched to Avigilon. YMMV. Even if you get motion to work, I expect you will eventually discover that writing directly to the NAS has many limitations. Then again, your requirements may be very modest.

Thanks, Alex, I checked the Gateway and Https is set to 443 but the phone will not connect on 443. Guessing 443 is not port forwarded. Will check. That said, I'm not sure if I have access to all the routers for port forwarding. If the Android is set to port 80, why does the phone first try https? There should be some way to select http or https on the phone. This seems like a defect to me. Your thoughts? Best, Christopher

I don't know about Hikvision, but I do this with Avigilon. For example, I can record a snapshot once every five seconds (appears as blue on the timeline) and 7 frames per second during motion (appears as red on the timeline). Best, Christopher

A board member from an HOA in our city recently contacted me about the surveillance system that I designed for our HOA. Our system can record license plates and video of every vehicle that enters and exits our neighborhood and can be accessed remotely over the internet. The design of our system was relatively easy given that our clubhouse is located at the HOA entrance and I had ready access to both power and internet. The other HOA does have power at the entrance for large brick wall signs, but they do not have internet access at the entrance. Although this is preliminary, I expect a budget in the range of $20,000 would not be a problem. So, they have power and the funds to install a good outdoor enclosure with server, etc, but what is the best solution for internet access? I expect both cable and phone are underground on one or both corners of the street. Do you think either the phone company or cable company would be willing to add a 'business line' at that location if the HOA was willing to pay for the install? Any other ideas for gaining remote access to the server? Best, Christopher

The HOA does not have a clubhouse or common facility. Ideally, they would prefer not to rely on one of the homes because ownership may change in the future. Also, there is no direct line of site to any of the homes from the entrance because the homes are in the foothills. Does anyone have experience with asking the phone company or cable company to add a drop? I'm guessing these services may pass within a few feet of the entrance signs, though it could be in the middle of the street rather than one side of the street.

Way better quality? JPEG2000 and H264 each have their advantages. JPEG2000 is a better choice for some applications. Best, Christopher

+1 Install a quality PIR and test the setup so that it generates virtually no false alarms. I use the Optex outdoor wireless PIRs so I can mount them anywhere.
