    POWER MYSTERY

kay your post gave me a good laugh... can you imagine trying to fit all 10 power wires into one terminal ur advice is right on - use a multimeter

    vibration in an industrial install

coop, thanks for the advice... i will let you know next month once the install begins what i came up with

    Elevator

that's exactly what you do. why mess with wireless that probably wont be reliable if you can just run a line of coax or utp in the harness and term ur cameras.. if it were me i would just call the elevator maintenance guys or anyone in the area and tell them what you want to do and they will show you how to access the harness and get your needed wires in
  5. i didnt put it on the net but i will look at it over the weekend and see what i can do
  6. i have pilot tested a stand alone dvr from hikvision/aventura technologies. it was the 8 channel model. i was impressed with the d1 resolution recording and the 30fps but the gui was a bit frustrating and the unit didnt come with a cd or dvd burner - u could usb an external burner but i didnt try that out. once someone comes up with a userfriendly gui on this compression it will be very good.

Most important feature/function of a DVR.

to me its all about recording a nice clear picture at a high frame rate you have to have that at the base and then you want it to have an easy gui so your client can use the thing and not call you to do their review once they have an incident
  8. i think this is an older thread that maybe i missed but is there going to be an area where we can display screenshots of cameras or dvr guis to help find better systems than we are currently using? i'd luv to see what everyones bread and butter is and then compare it to what im selling to see if i can improve my offering, etc im happy with my dvr for most applications but am always looking for a better dome, box cam, ptz, etc
  9. just finished a job where i joined my installation tech in pulling wire for a 16ch dvr upgrade - 13 replacement cams and 3 new cams in a hotel - knocked out 10 the first day along with moving the homerun 150ft to the data center from its spot in an office - 12hr day then yesterday the fun began with the 3 new runs in a 20ft ceeling with 2 access panels and a lot of pipes, wire, insulation, old wire, old pipes, old drop ceeling that was never removed when the new ceeling was added, cutting through dbl drywall, army crawling on pipes and ducts, etc etc etc.. and the place is only 17yrs old but you would have thought it was 50 with all that crap in the ceeling.... 14hrs later(with ur typical snags like "we need to get through that conf room but you didnt block it off for the hr that we needed it so we have to wait till the meeting gets done stuff) we had everything complete, and since i weigh 100lbs less than my tech, guess who was the rat in the ceeling sore in places i never thought i could get sore in, and im still blowing out drywall dust and dirt from my nose..

    crawling like a rat

if that was me i would have had a mild heart attack after seeing the racoon and then fell through the ceeling there probably isnt a time since then on every install that you dont think about that every time you go up in an attic or ceeling im surprised you're still in the biz after that day!

    PTZ's vs. Multiple Fixed Cameras

if the client is going to have a guard monitoring the cameras a decent amount of time throughout the day/nite i would say go PTZ but if no one is monitoring go fixed. clients luv to say "i want the cameras that can move and zoom" more for the cool factor and then when an incident was missed because the camera was on tour covering the opposite side of the parking lot, they come to you and say why did i buy a camera that was $2k+ that didnt deliver if price wasnt a concern i would prefer 20 spectra iiis covering everthing like a laser maze lol but back to your question since ive rambled on the obvious - i would prefer ptz because they are a better quality camera cover a lot more area at variable distance, are fun, and bring in good maintenance contract revenue when the motor goes down from over use
  12. My Tivo is, i should say was, about 2yrs old and the HD failed last month - i open it up and what do i find but a crappy Maxtor - i wouldnt trust that drive in a high end dvr if it cant even survive in a tivo its hard to live without tivo once you have had it.. im going through withdrawl,, one of these days ill go out and replace it.. could be this weekend but ive been saying that for weeks

    Ripped out another

thanks rory,, i'm still waiting on my union electrician to return my building prints for a job we bid on - they can move a bit slow but if you want to do any business downtown you have to use them but it is nice when people *** about project cost you just say "yeah those union downtown rates are killer arent they"

    crawling like a rat

hehe that's exactly what i was thinking when i was up there.. ok dont go that way because if u get stuck no one is going to be able to come get u.. it was also fun climbing over the duct and trying to to snag my head on the cement nails that were hanging above glad i didnt run into any furry creatures up there

Data, are these companies calling you? if not, how are you finding these people with systems that have crapped and need new ones maybe im missing this market in chicago
  16. I only use Western Digital SATA for video storage - it'll be one of the first thing that breaks in a DVR so why not go with a high end reliable drive i havent had one fail on me yet, knock on wood
  17. Does anyone have any experience with their systems? Honneywell is there distributor here in the states. they mfg high-end digital systems - i'm looking for a system for my casino client - 30fps/D1 res, etc http://www.fast-security.com/
  18. griffonsystems

    Fast Video Security AG

did you get a chance to checkout their systems rory?... i am going to try and get a dvr to test before year end but who knows if they will make it easy.. they have been very responsive directly but let me know Honneywell is there US distro and i havent heard a peep from Honneywell since Fast sent me to them over a month ago, quite the customer service from the big H

Need help on choosing cameras for Cocktail Lounge

whatever you do don't buy cheap IR domes. I made that mistake on a bar downtown and it cost me a lot of return trips and eventually had to replace them because they were so poor

Is my concept going to work? (Long)

they are good cameras, good picture and good ir distance, but the weather killed them. the board heater just isnt enough some winters

Is my concept going to work? (Long)

i wouldnt recommend this bullet if your winters get as cold as it does here in chicago. i have had these exact bullets die after a cold winter my 2cents
  23. anyone have a recommendation for lightening protection for a roof ptz - the camera should be fine but i worry about it running down the coax and frying my dvr
  24. griffonsystems

    PTZ roof camera protection

thanks scott, the headend unit is a bit pricey but if it works
