  1. Thanks for your reply. Yes, I am daisy-chaining them and the distance is approx. 900 meters in total. Termination is switched off on all cameras except for the last one of course. Will these amplifiers work with any RS-485 or are they limited to the protocol of the manufacturer?

  2. Linovision http://www.linovision.com/ does Linux DVR Software for Hikvision cards and also sells the Software bundled with a card. I haven't tried it myself though.

If you need IR or not, really depends on the amount of light that you have. You are not very specific on that. I don't recommend cameras with build in IR, I have had trouble with them very often. If you need IR, get a separate IR illuminator.

I must say that your post is a bit confusing. What do you mean by "level 2", "level 1" etc. You should give more data + space plan or at least a rough drawing of the space. It is hard to help if one has no idea how the space looks like.

  3. Hi everybody,

I just bought a KTD-404. Unfortunately it doesn't have the connection box with it and I don't know which cable belongs where. In the manual it only says how to connect to the connection box.

This is the picture in the manual:127179_1.jpg

Does anyone know which pin on the controller is for what? I will have to make my own cconnection box & cable.

  4. Have you tried Pelco D or P? They're fairly generic protocols that almost all PTZs support. You may need to change DIP switches in the camera to switch protocols.

If you need standalone PTZ control software, try PTZ Controller from http://www.serialporttool.com

I think my CyberDome doesn't support Pelco protocols - at least I have never seen any info about it. I also googled it already. I will try the tool - thanks for the link!

  5. Hi,

I have a GE CyberDome. The old one, not CyberDome 2. I think it only supports the Kalatel RS-422 protocol. Somehow I need to control it with my DVR Software. Currently I am using Skyvision and it supports several protocols, but not Kalatel.

I have also tried Netvision trial, but also Netvision doesn't support Kalatel protocol.

Is it possible to add a protocol somehow in Skyvision? If not, is the CyberDome able to take any other protocol than Kalatel? I know there is a converter (KTD-313), but I would prefer to not use one.

  6. I actually never heard about D-WDR or Digital WDR. I googled for it and only found some fishy Asian cams with D-WDR. Could be a cheap "enhancement" of the dynamic range.

I wouldn't touch it. Buy real WDR cams from Pelco, Samsung, Bosch, etc.

  7. There is nothing free koolmer! I feel you will choose the cheapest way no matter what problems that will get you in!

Why do you say that? There is very good open source Software existing. Open Office, Firefox, Thunderbird, etc. I use all this Software and it is often even better than the Software that costs money. I thought that there might be something like that for CCTV as well. If it doesn't exist yet, I am sure it will come in the future.

I have to get to the site to check what version I have currently, but I am pretty sure it is an older one. It is running very badly with constant lags, smart search is for sh... , motion detection is unprecise and it freezes about once a day completely.

  8. I have a Hikvision DS-4016HCSI with Skyvision Software & license file. I really need a Software update, as the current one freezes every few hours. I was told that Skyvision doesn't exist anymore and is called Ever-View now. I don't know if this is true, but I have written e-mails to Skyvision AND Ever-View. So far I have no response and I am really not sure if these companies still exist.

If these companies are dead, is there any free Software for Hikvision cards? I am not talking about Trial versions, but full versions - maybe open source or whatever.

    Thanks in advance.

  9. Hikvision will be launching a 5Megapix camera soon, I have 1 unit for testing but since it is a test unit, and I know they will modify it before release I will not make any screenshots available, but wait for the official released unit later.

I am not 100% satisfied, but as I said it is one unit out of five total, so I guess later this month or in february there will be more information.

I am looking for a D/N cam with 2MP. Hikvision doesn't have D/N cams on their Website and all MP cams they have are 1/3" and I guess thats a disadvantage in low light. How about the new ones?

    btw. 500 posts! Congratulations!

  10. Low light is also my main concern. I have a site with a hybrid system, but no IP cam yet. The idea was to put a 2MP cam at the reception, but the light at night is pretty low. It's only street lights coming through the (big) windows.

The analog Day/Night camera has no problem making a clear B/W image at night, but I wonder how a 2MP camera would do. Any input on this?

  11. Alright. Problem solved!!!

So - here is the end of the story:

I had installed the active receiver in the middle of the cable pull and after the active receiver I again used a pair of passive baluns for the remaining 100m. The picture got better, but still some interference left.

I mentioned before that the camera cable is running next to 230VAC cable for about 4m and this cannot be avoided. The power supply of my camera controller (Ktd-405) was plugged into the outlet at the end of this 230VAC cable (besides other equipment of course). Last week the controller failed and I traced it down to the power supply. It was a switchmode power supply, getting very hot. The moment I plugged it out from the outlet the image on the screen was PERFECT.

So somehow this PSU has induced interference into the 230VAC cable which then affected the camera cable and caused the noise in the picture. I have learned my lesson, but I really didn't expect that!

  12. 1080p with cif your customer will not be happy with the picture on the screen. i am with rory WHY WHY IN CIF why build an old system you have had some very good advice on here from people with years in the industry. but you wish to ignore it. from reading all your posts what i can make out is you are an installer selling cheap chines systems and now you are looking to build your own to make it even cheaper. what a way to run a buisness (cheap out of date dvrs) i will just leave you with this note Koolmer. a good installer has what is called a duty or care to its customer. i.e a system that does the job it is intended to do. to protect staff and property. with good back-up service from the installer. with cheap build your own chines systems this can never be done.

You make me smile. The card with CIF was for testing and installed for free

The cards I am buying are 4CIF and display is always 4CIF real time - no matter what you record. I have a few years of experience too and I am not ignoring any info I am getting here. The quality is very important - I agree and I think you got a wrong picture of what I am buying/doing.

  13. Well at that kind of price no wonder you are looking to chinese cards. Even Geovision 16 channel cards dont come anywhere close to that price. Also are you actually looking at Avermedia and Geovision "dealer" prices or just retail online, and then comparing it to the chinese prices which would be more like dealer price as they sell to anyone? Edit. ok the geo hardware compression is pretty pricey, but who uses that anyway? Though take a look at Nuuo and you can buy it right in the US, they are about 1/2 the cost with the hardware compression cards.

Also, are you going to order a card from china for your customer? What happens when it doesnt work or needs replacing? Thats a long way to ship it and a long time for them to be without video recording. Or is this just for your own personal use? Or are you ordering 100-1000 pieces?

But the main thing is that you are happy.

Also you mentioned you are recording in CIF mode, why would you do that?

I am installer, but the cards are for our own company. I know it is trickey with warranty, because of the huge distance. I wanted to have a 16 Channel H.264 recording card and a co-worker of mine has used Hikvision successfully. I only order 4 cards for now. Don't know about later. I don't know if the dealer is authorized partner or not. However it also seems that Avermedia doesn't support full screen viewing in 1080p and this is important for me.

The only reason that I use only CIF currently is that the card that I have only does CIF. I got it from the same co-worker for free, as he had no use for it anymore. I had a Comart Hicap-100 before that cost me a fortune a few years ago. The CIF H.264 hardware encoding card from Hik has better quality. The image is also clearer if compared to the 2CIF recording from Comart. Not sure about 4CIF.

  14. Who ever gave you that price was incorrect.

But anyway ... the point is NOT the card itself, it is the stability of the drivers and software. The card can be purchased for cheap in many cases, but you are paying for the software. If you have ever seen the unfinished and highly unstable software that comes with many cheap asian DVRs then you would understand.

What do you mean "The price is incorrect"?

Edit: Oh you mean the Avermedia price was too high. Yeah it was 2.300$ in an online shop. It was not hardware H.264, but MPEG4. I can see some people having beef with chinese cards/software. I haven't had any trouble yet and I hope I will not have any. I just wanted to say that the chinese "cheap" card gave me better performance and features than the "professional" card (Comart) that was a lot more expensive.

Of course I would not recommend to anyone to buy at eBay or some fishy asian company. However there are a few good ones that also put their Software Trials into the net for the customers and I think this is already a good sign. I have tried a few and I can take now what I liked best.

  15. That my point from "Netvision"

What do you mean? I have also checked Everview and Linovision, but if I buy the card from Netvision I get the Netvision Software for free with the card and I just mentioned before that the Netvision Software is the best one I have found for Hikvision cards. Besides that Netvision is not more expensive than the other Hikvision suppliers, but deliver better Software (imo). I have been working with Comart DVR cards for a few years, but the Comart Software is really poor compared to Netvision.

I havent tried Geovision or Avermedia - they are just too expensive with hardware encoding.
