  1. Essentially, this is correct, at least for a small network like this. The only consideration might be using 10/100 ports for uplinking - for example, if your 8-port switch is 10/100, and your 5-port is gigabit, and you go router -> 8-port -> 5-port, then you limit the connection from the 5-port to anything else to 10/100. If the PCs are both plugged into the 5-port, then they still have gigabit speeds between them, but if you were, say, to plug the NAS into the switch (with a gigabit port), you'd still only get 10/100 speeds between that and the PCs, because the links between the router and the 8-port switch, and between the 8-port and the 5-port, would be only 10/100. If the 5-port linked straight the the switch in this instance, it would allow full gigabit speeds between the PCs and the NAS. Of course, if the 8-port switch is all-gigabit, then those concerns are moot. If you were to use the Cisco switch I linked to, you could use the gigabit ports on that for the uplinks to the router and 5-port switch, and eliminate that problem as well. Matt, if I used an 8 gigabit poe switch such as the TRENDnet Web Smart TPE-80WS Gigabit POE Switch, as well as a TRENDnet TEG-S50G 5 port gigabit switch, I would connect my modem to my D-Link DIR-655 gigabit router, and then each switch (8 port gigabit switch, and 5 port gigabit switch) would connect to a port from my D-link router, or would I run the router---to the----8 port------to the 5 port, or does none of that matter since all are gigabit?.......I am sure the Cisco switch you mentioned may be a better (fanless) product, but the trendnet is all gigabit for future expansion, and about the same price range........any advice to talk me out of the trendnet?
  2. I will be using a total of 2 switches.....probably wire cable modem to D-Link Dir-655 wireless router, then use one port out from wireless router to 8 port poe switch, and one port out of the 8 port poe switch to a 5 port regular switch to connect two LAN computers, and one network printer......does that make most sense, or should i run the second switch off of another open port of the dir-655 wireless router that I use? Depends mostly on the physical layout, I'd say, and which way is easiest to cable. With two PCs and one printer, you could just plug all three straight into the router. For the price difference, I'd probably use a gigabit switch for the five-port, and link that directly back to the router (which also has all gigabit ports). Looking at my usual retailer, for example, a D-Link 5-port 10/100 switch is $28... the 5-port 10/100/1000 is $37. Well, I have my 2 computers and network printer in one room, and have just wired a cat 6 wall plate from that room to a closet, where I have my cable modem......I could have the wireless router stay in the room with the computers and connect both computers and printer to the router, then link the router to the 8 port gigabit switch, which would be connected to the modem, or just have everything in the closet, and run one port from either router or 8 port gigabit switch to the room with the comps and printer......I also have a Sonos box connected to my network that needs a port, and most likely gonna buy an NAS to store mobotix footage etc..... The way it sounds, there is no benefit, or issues regardless of how they are connected, as long as all are within the network? I know some have run a separate subnet for their IP cameras, but with only 4 mobotix 3mp cameras, hopefully I will not have much of an issue
  3. Only difference is expandability. FS108P only have 4 POE ports where the GS110TP has 8 POE. For your camera count the FS108P will work fine.
  4. - Any obvious benefits for using the GS110TP vs. the FS108P, short of 4 extra poe outputs?.......It appears that the 110 is partially "managed", vs unmanaged......will there be any noticeable difference for my setup? Thanks for those links......
  5. any benefit of using Gigabit poe switches vs. Ethernet poe switches for 3-4 mobotix ip cameras?......Ive been wiring my house with Cat 6 cable for the areas I plan to install 3-4 mobotix cameras, and I may attach an NAS to the switch in the future, in case I decide to record the mobotix cameras to the NAS vs. SD card......is there any benefit of using a Gigabit switch to connect the cameras to the network/NAS, or will a regular ethernet switch do just fine?
  6. Except neither is under low lighting. Yeah, I followed that thread as well.....the panasonic seems to be a strange camera, giving almost a colorless picture....Ive checked a few streams that dont show very good motion for some reason, even with good lighting. I have been trying to find some footage from the Panasonic BB-HCM581A, which has the PTZ and 21x optical zoom.....I believe its only VGA, but a few youtube vids proved pretty clear video.....it is pricey, but if it is good in low light, I may be interested......
  7. how about any of the higher end panasonic BB series cameras that claim low lux "color night vision"......there seem to be mixed reviews for these cams, but it would look a little more fitting in a babies room vs. a dome or bullet/box etc.....i think the 735 series is capable of megapixel streams?
  8. Thanks for the explanation.....what I also meant by "accessing a triggered event" would be if your network camera was setup to notify your mobile phone if a P.I.R. was "triggered" on your network camera, or possibly a sound trigger on your camera notified you on your mobile, so that you could immediately access what actually caused the trigger (i.e. broken window, or infrared detection etc).....I can see how it would be difficult to notice some vandalism at your house, and then have to go thru hours of video (10 minutes at a time) on your mobile to try and identify what happened etc.....
  9. Exacq is aware they need to improve event searches, and once that is developed and released, this app with rock. Chris, do you mean accessing "events" such as a trigger (pir, sound) and being able to view those recorded events from your mobile with Exacq?.....is Exacq the only software currently out there that would enable viewing previously recorded events from your mobile?
  10. does it just use the regular android browser to view live camera streams? Does audio work as well?
  11. I guess the exterior lighting is less of my issue, I have (2) 90 watt floods in the front of my house, 2(90's) on the left, 2(90's) on the right that are all activated from dusk to dawn, and a (500watt halogen) in the rear (switched only).....these lights are out of the reach of normal people, but how I look at it, purps/burglars arent normal people and may simply smash the lights with a stick/pipe etc...... Sawbones, have you tried IP Camera viewer for Droid with the mobotix?.....there is a free, and a paid app, and I have had better luck with a (Foscam) on the IP Cam viewer including audio....mobotix is listed as supported as well, but not audio I believe.....
  12. Possibly an AXIS 1054, or an Acti TCM-4301?...There specs show low lux color capable, but not enough sample video to support the claims........maybe an AXIS M1114, although no included audio support I believe?
  13. Looking for a highquality color ip camera with good low lux capabilities without IR support, but with audio support.......Will be using it as a type of (nanny cam) in my babies room for my father to share the enjoyment of watching my daughter get tucked in at night.....sounds cheesy, but my father is 1,500 miles away, and enjoys watching me read stories to my daughter at bedtime with the audio support from the cheap ip camera I currently use.....there is always some type of light on in the room, so not total darkness.....I would like it to work with any browser if possible, and mobile phone, but no recording capabilities are necessary......the room is about 13' x 15' if that helps......I am currently using a foscam 8908, which is no longer cutting it for me......poe support is helpful as well, and I dont mind paying a little bit for the camera, if it serves its purpose....... Thanks in advance for any recommendations....
  14. Firstly, I would like to thank a few forum members (buellwinkle), and (the wire guys) for giving some pointers thru PM's and emails. I am trying to setup an IP camera system for my home. I will be piecing this system together as I go along, so that I can afford nicer equipment bit by bit. I will have 2-4 cameras outside depending on the range of view of camera(s) used, and 2 cameras indoors (one of them that does not need to record, just HQ picture as a baby-cam that can also stream to my father at another house. Second indoor camera needs to record but I will try to put in a location that can view multiple entry points (i have a contemporary house with 22' ceilings. Outdoors in the front, I would like to view cars at the bottom of my driveway (about 100' long on a hill) as well as see faces on my doorstep.....in the rear, I have a swingset about 80 feet from the house that I would like to monitor, as well as many wild animals that wander around in the back......... I would like to at least record HQ video to an NAS or NVR based on a trigger of motion or sound etc, or even possibly record video at all times that just loops once the HD is full and records over old video. I would also like to be able to access live streams with Iphone or Android phone from remote locations, and possibly even recorded footage, but not completely necessary. I dont know if that means the cameras must be capable of multiple streams so that one can be megapixel to record, and other can me lower quality to stream to phone etc..... I have pondered over Mobotix (due to internal memory card, or even recording directly to NAS if needed, as well as some cameras including day and night lenses as well as wide angle viewing) as well as recommendations from others such as ACTI, Axis etc as a few ACTI cameras have included both day and night as well as IR illuminators. I will end up spending money on my setup, but do not have deep pockets......I have a lot of experience with multiple wiring schemes and installation, but have not had much experience with IP camera setups.... NAS, NVR, internal storage, network bandwith, remote viewing.....There are two many options and technology seems to change constantly.... Any advice will be much appreciated, there are a bunch of great guys here.
