  1. Picked up a AL600ULPD8CB (new, via ebay) to power the "cheap" cams (CNB etc), to make it look a little more finished than my HP linear supply. Now have faint wavy lines in the picture... And the supply can only be adjusted down to 12.6V. Did not hook up a battery, I would not think that was related. Gotta admit, I'm not that impressed with the construction either. Some of the devices are not even screwed to the heatsink, just stuck on with sticky material. The one device that is firmly attached is via a rivet... I'm sure I can add resistors to the circuit to get the voltage right, but these wavy lines suck. Any ideas appreciated.

    Intermittent black images

It seems unlikely the camera is 600mW that would be 50mA. Probably more in the range of 3-6W. My cameras with the least draw with no IR are around 100mA or 1.2W.

    Controlling DVR Motion Events

VitaminD is phenomenal. I cannot imagine having a system without it. Accurate enough that I have no problem sending pics to my cell phone WHEN there is a person in an area for example. Fast and easy to review other events that are captured during the day. I do run other software non-stop recording though, since it does not do audio and is limited to 1.3MP although can be used with some 3MP cams. The other thing that is rarely mentioned is that you can save months of clips on a 1TB drive. Anyway... Not that hard to add to an existing system, pick up a used Axis encoder on ebay 241 or 243 usually around 100. Or use one channel of an old 2400 quad encoder around 50 used. Actually you could use 4 channels of the 2400 if you limited the capture to 320x240 per channel to keep the frame rate up on the encoder.

    audio /led alarm incicator panel

My honeywell vista 20p does that with the bidirectional remote w audio, if you tap a button for status. I imagine they have a panel with voice. Maybe check out the 6150V.
  6. And here is the revamped supply with a 4A Lambda linear reg sub'd in. MUCH better build quality and components than the Alltronix, and dead quiet. The box did not even have some of the punch outs done right, stamped but could not be knocked out. Had to get out a Greenlee, haven't done that in a while...

quality when viewing over the net

I recently took a vacation to the south of France, which had slower speeds than yours and was able to view a Qsee DVR (TVT rebranded) just fine. Could not view Axis camera station though sometimes on playback.

Help sought in selecting standalone NVR

Try Milestone "Go", only has a local client but much better than Axxon
  9. The Acti "night" video actually has a lot of light if you look at the shadows being cast by the people...
  10. During the day the picture quality (PQ) is amazing, and they do a great job of exposure/shutter speed. You would need a lot of analog cameras to get the same resolution/coverage. The only issue I would have is night time sensitivity, which is a problem with a LOT of the MP cameras not just Axis. If you can add enough light it is not an issue. It all depends on what you are trying to do with what amount of money. Have not tried their new series with better low light. Some of the MP+ sensors even with exview have worse low light than the the Axis P3344...
  11. The Qsee might be better if it was not lighting up that post, perhaps causing it to back off the exposure. The other one does pretty decent at night, hard living with no ICR after a while. Thanks for posting, always nice to see results
  12. FYI, with the Axis you do not even need a NAS to do the recording. Add a SD and use their free camera companion software. Or you can have the camera record to the NAS directly.
  13. The V is in a metal enclosure, the non-V has no back if I remember. I think it has holes but can't remember. I took mine out of the enclosure, had no problem adjusting the position to a good spot. In other words I have it horizontal like you would. There is a limit - i.e. you can't set the lens exactly horizontal, only to within maybe 15 deg but that would be a different application than you are talking about. If you're buying new I'd look at the new series with better low light. Unless you really think you need the vandal enclosure and you can get a good deal. You will need a fair amount of light to get them at 1-30sec, I use two CFL's. Two CNB WCM-20VF have the same horizontal resolution and MUCH better low light. Seriously you can run them in color at 1-60 sec and have a good pic with that much light. Something to consider. I like the extra resolution of the 3MP and having only one camera on the front of the house.
  14. That's in process, they sent a link to the tool, which I then have to send in. Turns out it was caused by replacing a NIC card, they use the MAC on that to generate a fingerprint of your system. After 3 such changes, you need a waiver from them or you are stuck buying another set of licenses.
  15. I've got a P3346 that I mounted under the soffit above the garage doors. Got some 1/4" vinyl board cut a hole replaced the mesh material with that.

    CNB VBM-24VF

You can actually loosen the lens slightly (I think there are one or two screws) and try to readjust it? I took a similar CNB apart and there was a slight washer/shim in there that they probably used to tweak the backfocus.
  17. Just looking at the number of pixels it seems the first one might even have more pixels/ft, where the person is. In the first one though, they are lucky he was not wearing a hat...
  18. update: For the time being, I have managed to get 3 HD and 1 SSD into the enclosure. Bought a card and 5.25 to 3.5 adapter and going to try to get one more in... Next time seriously will consider building my own computer with something like an Antec case...
  19. I could use a little more storage and was thinking of buying a small computer case and some PCI-e adaptors to SATA. Any reason this would not work well or things to look out for? Thanks in advance.

    Q-See dvr problems

Not to argue the point but I have a 8 ch qsee and 4 cams on sale $300 from costco that works fine and I use as backup/overview to the main rig... For a little more you can do better quality and reliability wise. We skipped that step spent even more and went with some 3MP cams (Panasonic and Axis). No comparison. Good luck. If it's from Costco just take it back to the store even if bought online, I would not screw around with a RMA. I think they even refund the shipping.

Got a Cisco router? You may want to replace it.

Man, I saw this and was amazed... I was done with Linksys after my last purchase an E2000 did not even work until it had a firmware update! Only reason I got that was dyndns built in (which no longer works), now I think I'm just going to DD-WRT my WRT54...
  22. The VMS is running on a computer, which only has a few SATA slots. Would like to add some more hard drives. Considered a box like mediasonic but not convinced of the reliability. And not sure how that works in terms of accessing the drives separately. I can setup the software to record to a failover drive, so would be nice to access them separately. Do you have a recommended box? For the cost it seems I could get a case and power supply from Newegg, and fill it with hard drives connected with a few SATA cables.

    Legacy 12VDC Cameras - Power from 24VAC?

The point was that it should be more than 3V as a rule of thumb, not less than 3V. If you want less than 3V you need to use an LDO like the LT1083 etc.

    Legacy 12VDC Cameras - Power from 24VAC?

The 78xx has a "typical" dropout of 2V, so needs at least that much to maintain regulation...

Best bang for the buck camera?

Unless they just left out the IR filter like the WBL20S
