not sure of the model. its a 13.8V battery backed up 3AMP psu in a case that goes on the wall like an alarm base station. it has battery and output fuses that light up a 'fault' led when blown

so if i give one of my 12vdc cameras 12v at 300 amps its gonna survive?

be very careful! i once accidently put 24VDC through a camera that only wanted 9V. the camera released its magic smoke AND backfired killing ch1 of my dvr. i now have to make do with 15 channels instead of 16 which is a pain because i could do with that extra channel!

Hmm, WaveReader is really old school Also try WaveVue on my site. See if that installs. I dont recall what dependencies it uses though. yeah, old but my system rocks! i need to do a full video of it, got it setup and interacting with everything possible! wavevue installed and connected to my dvr but displays various errors when i try to actually view video. i'll try again next time im on a windows machine

i got a vantage camera for 99p from ebay as spairs or repairs. the iris was fecked. i spent a long time fiddling with it, it was almost done and then i dropped it and the pieces went everywhere so i just gave up and stuck a lens from a different camera in. the other camera now has a fixed iris, fixed focal length lens in, not the best but its fine for where it is. ringing a cctv co is a good idea, i'll do that today! i keep meaning to ring some demolition companies for stuff from buildings they are gonna pull down (alarms, cctv, emg lights, tannoys, etc) i have walked past a couple of building sites in the past, asked if i could go in and been given permission. one company said they were required to 'soft strip' first and if someone like me took stuff for them it would benifit them but due to my age i was not allowed on site so they said they would turn a blind eye if i went at night when the site was closed

What software is it? WINE just needs all the dependencies, download dependency walker and see what files are needed, then copy them to your wine install on the linux OS. Dependency walker 1.0 also came on the XP CD. For browser based activeX and Wine check this - it shows for Mac but Linux Wine is even easier. http://www.bahamassecurity.com/articles/browser-based-video-on-mac.asp the software is WAVEREADER for my VISTA VC16Te-CDR i have managed to run other exe files on wine, like a dvr client for my friends work but when i try to install wavereader the installer gets to the end and says 'wavereader could not be installed because the installer was interupted' or something like that. wine also comes with IE but staying true to IE tradition it comes up with a white window for 5 mins then crashes out :@ i will have a look at those links now, thanks

yeah, i was thinking about that. ALL my cameras on my system are used from ebay. they are all 480TVL or above. most are 520 (or whatever the standard beginning with 5## is) i think i will probably just go for the leds on proto board inside a floodlight housing unless i find a camera with ir in a skip, demolition site or ebay.

that may be true but i don't really need a good one. as long as i can see faces i'm happy. i have modded cameras and various other things to get them to do what i want in the past and i don't mind doing the same with an IR lamp.

i subbed to you on youtube. your setup seems pretty cool. mine is coming along but i am installing it bit by bit as i get the money to buy new cameras. i will do a video of my setup at some point and post if for you to see. i can't do screenshots because my laptop is running linux so no activeX and wine won't let me run the software :'(

unless you can find a camera with a 180* lens you are going to struggle to cover each blue area with one cam. i had the same problem with the road at the front of my house. the blue circle is what i want to cover but i have to use two cameras. one camera is orange, one is red. they overlap slightly to stop blind spots.

an IR lamp on ebay is about £50 inc P+P, a halogen floodlight and diffuser would cost me no more than £10. i want my cameras recording 24/7. although i have it setup so that when nothing is happening the frame rate is only about .5FPS but when motion is detected it bumps it up to 5. i can't have a bright floodlight as it will shine into neighbours windows and disturb their sleep. mounting the light higher than the cam is possible but would that not create shadows on the face?

There is a version of the door viewer camera that has the DVR built into the camera which sits at the back of the door. Being battery powered = no wires. Ilkie i dont really like standalone stuff and as it was going to connect to the main dvr it would not be good for me. i just settled for a camera at the top of the porch type thing and a camera looking at the gate.

nobody seems to of mentioned that you want them as close to eye level as possible. if they are high then all you are going to get is the top of heads, so i would recommend putting them as low down as possible.

i was going to use one of those cameras in my front door but cba'd drilling the holes for cable.

sorry for not making it clear... iknow that the ip camera will come out pretty much the same as the old camera on the dvr BUT it will also be recording on a local NAS or a remote FTP server. i just want it also in my normal DVR because i take advantage of the motion and alarm capabilities and at the end of each day i search through all motion activations/alarms. it is easer to do this all on the dvr than some on the dvr then some on a web browser to the ip cams. basically i will use the dvr for everything but if there is an incident and i need a nice clear facial shot then i will get the images direct from where the ip camera is storing them. thanks - luke

hi, i am wondering if IP cameras that also have analogue out exist. i like analogue systems because all cameras run to one central place (DVR) that does all the work. but i don't like IP because its all done in the camera and then the wire just connects it to the www/LAN. however i do understand that IP quality is significantly better than analogue. i already have a standard analogue system with a pretty old dvr that uses wavelets (says its AKA jpeg2000) for compression which is not that great and the DVR does not have an option to record to an ftp server. i was thinking of replacing the camera at my front and back doors with IP ones but do not want to loose them from my analogue system. i quite like AXIS stuff and i know they make units that replace a DVR. so you have analogue cameras and they go into a digitizer thing which converts each video input to an IP channel (i just wish they made a dvr that had this feature!). if i had two axis ip cameras allso with standard video out that connected to my router AND dvr and i also had a 1ch ip digitizer thing on the dvr output could i view my axis ip cameras and my dvr video output on the same web page? thanks - luke

hi, i bought this cheapy microphone off ebay (link at bottom of post) and i intend to put it on the side of my shed to pick up audio from the alley. there are already two cameras in the alley. my shed is in the middle so one camera looks at each side. my house is an old victorian build so the shed (built as a coal shed) is made of brick and one side of it is part of the garden wall. baisically the microphone is NOT waterproof. i have two vantage cameras in the alley already and they have wholes at the bottom for conduit. i was thinking i could put the pcb of the mic inside the camera housing, extend the mic from the pcb and put it in the hole at the bottom and then silicon around it. or i could buy an IP 67 box and put the whole lot inside that. you'd be surprised, its not even got wet and its been raining heavily for 5> hrs! the mic will not work in the shed, it has to be outside. i am thinking of doing one of the following: putting the pcb of the mic in resin so that the circuit is safe from moisture and only the mic has the possibility of getting wet putting the mic pcb inside a camera housing and extending the mic to the bottom of the camera housing (as mentioned in post #1) putting it inside a birdbox or something shelling out for a proper mic here is a diagram.

hi, as most of you on here are cctv engineers i guess you must replace systems from time to time. ALL my equipment on my system is second hand and yet it still works perfectly! the way i see it is, i am fine with a 4 year old camera that has been used before, if it has a few scuffs on then so be it. i'd rather pay £30 for something that works just as good as a brand new equivalent that would cost £150+ i need more outdoor dome cameras. ideally auto iris, varifocal, IR (in preferred order). i usually get my stuff from ebay but there is not alot on there at the moment. i need: psu's enclosures cameras pirs IR illuminators other stuff that may be useful. i live in manchester UK so if anyone is in the UK and has some old cameras heading towards the bin, could you PM me please? thanks - luke (oh, and a dvr would be good too. i have one now but the compression is not that great and i can't view over the internet. i am not looking to replace this DVR, just have a backup. it needs to be 16 ch, have alarm ins and outs, have rs485 for ptz's and have audio. 1ch will do but 4ch is better.

sorry, forgot to say. i live in manchester (uk) so it always rains. i have decided to just put it under the roof of the shed. if it dies i'll pay another £4 to replace it and try a different way. but about 1 hr after i installed it we got heavy rain and it still works!
