  1. thanks, I PMed a link to those who asked for it. dont worry rory, no hard feelings! guess I will learn the ropes of this forum as I lurk amongst you! BTW, what Im looking for is a camera that does well in low light as well as bright areas of the yard. The backyard where the camera will be is mostly sandy, a drawback of being near the beach, and has a tendency to reflect a LOT of bright sun. IR is not really needed, as I run my cameras during the day mostly.

  2. hey everyone, Ive been reading a bit on cameras, and I need to purchase a fourth camera for my home. I have read that the "new" 600 TVL cameras are available, but some folks seem to think they are a "gimmick". so can the nice folks here at cctv forums set me straight? I found a supplier (not ebay!!!!!) that has them fairly cheap, but I am sceptical, as they are simply Sony CCD chip cameras. Shouldnt a 600 tvl camera be the newer SuperHad or the ExHads? I want to post a link to it, but I got scolded a tad in another post because they had Geo knock-off cards on their site. I can PM the link if its allowed here. So whatcha think?

  3. yea, ive always tried to do that with other cards as well, such as sound cards and other input cards, but unfortunately i have a GIGANTIC Heatsink and fan apparatus on my AGP card and blocks the first PCI slot. The other slots i try to keep open for cooling reasons. BTW, i ran my nv5000 all day today and not a single hitch at all with framerates. 80mm fan is doing the trick. thanks kandcorp again!

  4. ok, guys. i think i have it figured out. i have my card mounted to the second to bottom PCI slot, and i think its a heat issue. I left the side door off my computer and it worked better. So i figured I would set up an old 80mm fan i have from a previous pc ransacked for parts in front of the card and BAM! problem solved. Just thought I would share this with everyone for future knowledge. Keep them cards cool, baby!

  5. thanks kandcorp. i must be using an older version than you. Im still using 5.1. In my record settings i see motion sensitivity, file quality, and frame rate. Only i see the "stop recording after xxx seconds" settings under the alarms section. Ive got that part set to record the camera 45 seconds after motion, but i cant find for the life of me any settings to edit the pre-record... do i need to update to the newest version to get this?

  6. ok, so i checked my settings, and the 4th cam was not enabled, but in the recording settings, it was set to "always recording". perhaps this is why. I have them hooked up to ports 1,2, and 3. I will give it a try tomorrow, as I dont run them at night, they are not very good at night. Thanks for looking, I'll post tomorrow as to what the results are disableing recording.

  7. hey all, I have an Avermedia nv5000 120 fps dvr card. My problem is that I have 3 cams hooked up right now. Cams 1 & 2 record fine, but cam 3 records very choppy video and they are all set to 30 fps. This card should do 30fps on all 3 channels as I am actually using only 90fps total? Am I missing a setting or something? I can export and post some example clips to .avi if needed, (but if you need them to help diagnose, how do i post it here?)

  8. mostly my questions are concerning the playback.

-when i use intelligent search and define an area to search, does it only search for motion in that specific area?

-Is there a way to output the file to an AVI? How is this done?

-Can I designate sensitivity for certain areas, or is it across the board for that cam?

-whats a good sensitivity for people walking across the cameras view? right now its set at around 50-60, and i got about 800 megs worth of my wifes cats walking around! Im afraid to set it too low and miss the important stuff!

Im sure i will have a bajillion more as I start using it more! Hope you dont think i am a pain!

  9. as the title says, how do i disable passwrod protection on the avermedia software? I have to enter a password literally for everything, even to simply minimize the program! I use the system at home and dont use the remote monitoring features (yet, anyway) I saw a box that says "ask for passwrod at startup" and deselected it, but i dont see any other settings concerning passwrods. I am set up as admin. any ideas for a dude with sore fingers from entering passwrods over and over?

  10. There are definitely some sub $100.00($95-$99 ) cameras that are very good. If your looking for an IR bullet type cam like sec. monst. posted, you should be able to find a decent one. Oh, and props for getting the Aver NV5000. Awesome DVR card, you will be very very satisfied. Make sure though you are using the new Version 5.5 software. Are you going to be using that card for 4 channels @120fps or 8 @15fps.

The CD that came with it is version 5.1. Is this the version your talking about? I went to avermedias site and they only have version 4.7 up there. Is there an alternate website or something Im missing? BTW, this is hands down the best and most informative forum for security stuff out there. Thanks to all of you guys here!

Got these cams for $72, should I just go ahaead and order another one? I am also curious to see if the picture quality will be better on the NV5000 dvr card coming in today. Does the dvr card make a difference on picture/video quality?

  13. Guys no links to web sites selling pirate cards pleeeaasee .. thanks.

Oops! Sorry about that! I guess I didnt even look at their dvr cards. The link I attached was supposed to be the camera page where I bought them from. My most humble apologies!

Still interested in some suggests for budget cameras, though. While Im here, this question is sorta related to the budget camera question. I have found that a lot of budget cams are Sharp chips. Should I avoid these, or is it a preference thing? Ive read the Sony chipped cams are better, but never found a "real-life" side by side comparison. Thanks, and again, soooo sorry for the bad link!

  14. Hey all! I have a dumb question about cameras. Before I ask the question and run for cover I am VERY familiar with the old addage "you get what you pay for". Found this out by buying a cheap dvr card from ebay... I know, i took that one on the chin, but gracefully chalk it up as a life lesson.

That being said, I am on an EXTREMELY limited budget and need to purchase one more camera for my home, as I am about to testify against my very crazy neighbor. I have 2 cams in the front yard, and one on the side yard, now all i need is one for the backyard. These are the 3 cams I have now.

[link removed by mod - contains pirated cards]

I am hooking them up to an Avermedia NV5000 thats coming in on Monday. I am ashamed to say the dvr card Im using now is cheap Tiawanese junk from ebay, thats why I got a "better" card coming. ( couldnt afford the mighty GEO!) That being said, are there any sub-$100 cams available that have a decent picture? I dont need to pick up liscence plate numbers or anything like that, just be able to see the person walking thru the yard. IR would be nice, but the ones I have sorta suck at night and I normally dont run the cameras while I am home. Only while I am at work.

    Any ideas?

*runs for cover protecting head from verbal projectiles*

  15. thanks for the replies. so basically Im gonna have to plunk down the $$$ for an 8 port then? anyone know of the cheapest place to get a 8 port Geo? Im pretty poor right now! I found a seller on ebay who i verified through Geovisions tech support/customer service that is legit. Hes got the GV-650 for $280. Sound like a good deal to ya'll?

Also, i see on Geo's website they sell small cards to add more cameras. Can i get one of these and add 4 more ports to a geo card?

  16. hey all, new to the forums. I currently have a cheap ebay-bought Taiwanese no-name dvr card in my system right now (4 port 60 fps), and am looking into a nice perty Geo very soon. My question is my budget only (barely, actually!) allows me to afford the gv-650 4 port card. I still, however, wish to use both cards at the same time, as i'm looking to have 6 cameras. Is this possible on one computer, or will they not play nice with each other? Also, will my system be able to run a Geo? I hear they like an Intel board. Specs are below. Thanks for having me here! Look forward to talking to each of you!
