  1. Hikvision as already stated are pretty cheap, they are on sale right now if you have access to ADI.

    Vivotek can also be cheap.

If you want really cheap, with a high number of cameras NVR and all look at a packaged system at Costco.

Also you can skip the CAT6 for wiring in cameras, just an added extra cost.

  2. Well, I bought a camera (Hikvision DS-2CD2032-I) and a POE switch and got the camera running. Looks like to motion record I'm going to need an NAS or NVR. Is there a way to record straight to the computer (Win7) that's running the software? Leaning towards just getting an NVR. Any suggestions on a reasonably priced NVR compatible with this camera? Thanks for any help.

Hikvision has an NVR that may be in your price range.

You could use Blue Iris as the recording software on the computer and just put in a second hard drive if you only want to record 1 camera.

  3. Timb,

As long as electric power is there for driving camera system alive,

cold would not matter. Heat and Hot Temp always kill electric system down. As to analog camera, 960H would be recommendable, just because they are new.

Most electronics don't like to be extremely cold or hot, this is why we use heated enclosures with fans to control the temp and keep everything working the way they should.

  4. Hi! Thanks for all the replies! Sorry got held up with finals in school.

I'm really new at all these networking and DVRs, so while I'll be trying your suggestions (Have to go to the office to check these settings), I also wanna ask:

What's the difference between using the standard web port 80 (is this right?) versus when I set my DVR's HTTP to anything else, like right now it's set to 3000. (It used to be set to 8080 as recommended by the manual, I just changed it to 3000 just for the heck of trying to make things work)

    And what's port 554? What's it for?

    Thanks again!

Port 8080 is used as most ISP's block port 80 to stop people from hosting servers on residential connections. You should have no issue using port 3000 as long as you aren't using it for anything else.

  5. Yes, on my own web server. I can FTP to and from using CuteFTP but the DVR doesn't send anything to it.

Sounds like you may need to switch to a binary mode on the FTP connection, or may also be an active vs passive FTP mode issue.

May also be the DVR is trying to use SFTP or FTPS which would be on a different port then FTP.

You either need to review your logs or run a packet capture to see what is happening on the wire, this will let you know what is going on.

  6. If my router is 20 meter (65 feet) away from my two bullets. Can I power them over Ethernet? Do I have to lie ethernet cables for both cams to the router (they are 4 just meters appart) or is there another solution?

Chances are your router does not have POE so the answer would be a no, you would need a POE switch. Yes you will have to run a cable to each from the switch.

  7. The issue you have with moving the cable and balun connection can be solved by stripping the conductor carefully and installing a 0.25mm ferrule before reinserting into the balun. You can then screw the clamps down onto the ferrule very tightly withot fear of fracturing the copper conductor. This DOES work. Tried and tested

I use insulated ferrules purely because they have colours identifying their size and I use a CK stripper on 0.25mm cable cat5 (and cat6) which prevents and weakening scores in the conductor, the ferrules are crimped and then either screwed or pushed into the balun depending on which typ of fitting they have. Nowadays I use an automatic crimper but the style shown worked well too.

I am still looking for a supplier in Canada, I really want to start using these. To avoid using them I have considered using baluns which have an RJ45 jack instead of screw down terminals.

Are you using the same pair for the positive and negative video signals? If you are try using blue and blue which for positive and green and green white for negative, see if that helps any.

  8. I have never understood how people can throw out a price and say your camera will be 225 installed, I have had cameras that take 30 minutes to install and others take 3 hours, but that is just me.

for 4 cameras 1TB will be more then enough to go back a week or more. The honeywell stuff is not top of the line, but since I don't know your budget I can't recommend anything different.
