  1. Congrats! Now to make sure you have the older firmware incase you want to go back .. you did save it right? LOL just kidding. Since we are certain of the model now, I have the last working 2.606 for that DVR incase you do wish to return to it. Infact the last few 2.606 versions took care of that flickering in 9 way view. LE-A model is pretty much the standard Dahua DVR and can always get firmware updates to that. The support for that DVR model is literally unlimited. thanks. for the help. it seems to make a difference in the resolution, and few other quirks, also in the search area as well.
  2. ok, thanks. I appreciate the help.
  3. I’m having a hard time getting the PSS client software to display more than 100 videos per day per camera. I’m sure this is some limit set somewhere ,but I can’t seem to find where to increase it. Thanks in advance.

"Ghost orbs" what are they really?

I guess driving a wooden stake into the camera would void the warranty?

"Ghost orbs" what are they really?

Well, if the best I can do after I die is float around in front of somebody’s CCTV camera, the afterlife is going to be very boring.. Everytime I see one, I keep thinking about the last scene in Woody Allen’s “Mid-Summer Nights Sex comedy”..

"Ghost orbs" what are they really?

I wouldn't have thought something that small would show up. must be very close to the camera.
  7. The upgrade was succesful (WHoo Hoo!) " title="Applause" /> I was having the screen flicker problem (think of the deja vu/cat walking by in the movie the Matrix, where they changed the program) it would act as if their was movement and therefore record. so far it doesnt' appear to be doing it since the upgrade. I was also having issues with the search/play. Some of the video files were getting lost in the Bermuda triangle. sometimes they would appear, sometimes they wouldn't pretty frustrating. I'm going to check to make sure its working now. thanks for all the help!!
  8. at least its supported. Which is something I can't say about a lot electronic stuff.

it just looks very large for pollen, but again, it makes sense. thanks
  10. I understand. Here is the product on the supplier's website. http://discountedcctv.com/product_info.php?cPath=1_2&products_id=84 thanks.

dust motes? Never heard of that but it sounds reasonable. You know when a sunbeam comes in the window, all that stuff floating in the light? Outdoors, it could also be pollen or other type of airborne allergens. thanks.
  12. Very cool. thanks. I know that is the model (according to the G4 website and my supplier). Do you know how to verify the MAC address? The INFO is System 2.606.0010.0 Build Date 9/2/2009 Web 2.17.15 thanks

dust motes? Never heard of that but it sounds reasonable. Again, if this were summer I wouldn't even bother posting this question but in December at 28 degrees, all the bugs are grounded.

    Is it legal?

One tactic you might consider is to just give the cops a list of license plates that you "observed" without going into the details of how you observed them. While it's absolutely legal to record the plates of every vehicle that passes by, you don't necessarily want the fact that you're doing so to become public knowledge; people often have a strong negative reaction to such things. agreed.
  15. I bought it from discountedCCTV.com The model is a G4-HD16E DVR. The rebooting issue seems to have stopped. I had some setting about transfer/transport set accidently and that may have caused it. It has worked fine for about 5 days. The rebooting started after I was playing in the ENCODE area. I would still like to get a firmware upgrade. thanks

Chances are, if the plate belongs to a known "problem" person, then the plate and car themselves will also be well-known to police. I've reported suspicious vehicles before and based solely on the description over the phone, they often say they know who I'm referring to. I think you are right. this isn't that large a town. The inccident that happened that prompted me buying this system the crook had a car with a bad muffler. He actually woke me up coming and going, but I didn't get out of bed to look.

Well, I haven't yet. However if it works, I'll post it here.

    Is it legal?

Legally speaking, recording the presence of a car, ONLY proves the presence of that car... not of its owner or any passengers (unless they stop and get out). Here in BC, a speeding ticket (among other moving violations) typically results in two penalties: a fine, and penalty points applied to the driver's license (which may result in further penalties applied later to that person's insurance). However, when we had photo radar, a photo speeding ticket included only the fine, applied to the registered owner of the car. Because the driver's identity could not be proven, points were not assigned. IF, however, the owner chose to nominate someone else as the driver, that person's license COULD then be assigned points (pending burden of proof, of course). True, I had this issue when I lived in Germany. I got a speeding ticket there, and it use to be they would send a photo of you driving but that was halted when a member of parliament was sent a photo of him and his wife opened the letter to find the photo of both him and his girlfriend in the passenger seat. So at least in 1992 they sent only the driver’s photo. My goal is to provide the police with a starting point. If all I can do is give them a fuzzy image a human breaking into my car, that’s not much to go on. Before buying the camera system I reviewed a lot of surveillance videos on youtube and what I discovered was for example, was that I could tell it was a teenage black male breaking into someone’s garage, but I couldn’t pick him out of a line-up. The only cameras I could do that with were the HD cameras that cost about $800. Not an option. However If I can give the police a video of all 14 cars with plates that traveled down the road that night, then they can determine that 13 were legit, and one is owned by someone who lives two towns over, has a criminal record, and has stolen goods in his possession. Perhaps my video would be enough to have a judge grant a search warrant. After I give the police the video, the ball is in their court. Without the plate number, even a video of a face isn’t worth crap without a name, unless someone recognizes them. So unless the car is stolen, then I’m hoping it will help. thanks.

    Is it legal?

Nope. I think I'm good. part of one camera catches part of the neighbor's front yard, but that can't be helped. Also, I don't plan on doing anything with the video, even viewing it, unless myself or the neighbors report a car break-in burglary, etc. thanks.

    Is it legal?

thanks. I did say I lived in Illinois, which has some really stupid laws on this topic, but it appears the supreme court ruled in my favor (see post above). Also its been my experience that the police are not legal experts, despite what they wish you to believe. They may or may not be correct, and I don’t want to spend $50K in court defending my position. I’ve had police tell me something is illegal when I clearly know it was legal. Anyway, that’s for the help. So far I’m having fun with these cameras. I’ve found out that the neighbor’s cat has a 3am schedule of walking by my porch and ticking my dog off. Also, the raccoons know what day garbage day is. Which is what prompted the cameras in the first place. The dog would bark at deer, raccoons, opossums, stray cats, joggers, etc. but not at the burglar breaking into my car. (the dog has his priorities I guess. ) By the time I wake up to look outside to see what it was he was barking at, I’m wide awake and can’t get back to sleep. Now, I can just roll over in bed , turn the monitor on and see what’s up, then yell at the dog to shut up. thanks.

    Is it legal?

Since posting I found this, which seems to answer my question. As recognized by the Supreme Court in United States vs. Knotts 368 U.S. 276, 281-82 (1983): A person traveling in an automobile on public thoroughfares has no reasonable expectation of privacy in his movements from one place to another. When [an individual] traveled over the public streets he voluntarily conveyed to anyone who wanted to look the fact that he was traveling over particular roads in a particular direction, and the fact of his final destination when he exited from public roads onto private property.13 http://www.library.ca.gov/crb/97/05/
  22. thanks. My brother brought up a point I never thought of. He said he saw on the news that someone took his DVR in for servicing and they found where one of his kids walked in front of the camera without any cloths on, so they arrested the guy for child porn. I think the world has gone completely nuts. anyway, I have only a couple of cameras inside the house (living room, garage, basement). I'll set those to only record when we are on Vacation or away.
  23. Yeah that is plenty. Those files should be overwritten in a couple of months. Why worry? Do I sense a little pride creeping in here I'm a DBA by profession. Always looking to clean up crap files and disks..
  24. thanks. no not a backup. I'm not worried about that. I was just wondering how (using the DVR ) to delete specfic files (if possible). I have a 2 TB drive, so plenty of room, I was just wanting to delete some crap files I created when I was setting it up. I can just set it to delete them because now they are over 24 hours old. thanks for all the help!
  25. My last problem is how to delete past video files? I found where I can schedule deletions (i.e. 1 day old, etc.) is there a way to mark and delete them rather than just mark anything over X number of days for deletion? thanks
