  1. Hi all. I am having problems adding additional HDD to the log location on a Geo GV_DVR 1480 6 bay system thats been working fine for years. After adding the new HDD as usual and going into System Configure / General Setting in the geo system, when I go into Video Log Storage / Set Location... the new HDD is there but has a Red Question Mark on left of HDD (Path) and under size states "Read Only / Not valid" Does this with any HDD i add in the usual way... I have added additional hard drives and powered them up as usual. (initialize / primary partition) I have added them into system using hot swap hdd tool (Add for recording) yet they appear unavailable in the system? any help appreciated, thanks & Merry Christmas freeflyer

    balun or encoder?

Hi all I have a range of cams that are analogue and others that are digital and I want to record onto an IP network device. I wanted advice on getting the analogue camera content onto an IP network. For example I have an Extreme CCTV EX82 and an Extreme CCTV EX45 here that both have BNC connectors, but I want to connect them to my switch using Cat 5 / RJ45. Can I just use a Balun that has BNC on one end and RJ45 on the other? Or do I have to use an Encoder? Thanks for any advice Freeflyer
  3. Hi all I am after the best current (and proven working) specifications for a self build Geovision hot swap system. Current requirements are 16 cams using a GV 1480A, however will possibly upgrade with another 1480 card in future, so need to build a future proof system for this. I currently have a Geovision HotSwap DVR (version 1) which is great and has been running over 5 years (but it was a nightmare to import this from Taiwan and no UK dealer sell the Geovision pre built kit) so I have decided to build myself. Has anyone out there done a build recently with a 1480A on a quad core / win 7 / 64 bit system? all help appreciated PS Hi Rory, longee timee no speakee
  4. Hi All I am trying to identify a source for the flexible (steel?) conduit / sleeving that protects the cables coming from the rear of an exterior camera housing to the junction box. i.e. The stuff that stops someone cutting through the cables at the part between the housing and the junction box any ideas, has this stuff got a trade name? I'm based in the UK Thanx for any advice
  5. Hi all After extensive research on this site, I am setting up a Geo 1480 System on a new build and need some advice on speccing the ideal components before purchase - I want the best possible system available with reliability / redundancy built in using the best components, not the cheapest. Using 1480 DVI card. Possibly using Gigabyte GA-8I945P-G RH M-board and aiming at over 1TB storage. Questions are; OS setup on RAID 1 / Data store setup on RAID (probably 5) any advice? Would I be better using a RAID Card? Processor: was going to use LGA775 3.0G(630) (Socket T) HT – Would I be better or worse off with a dual core instead? Graphics: read the ATI X300 is the way to go - is this the best solution or just a cost effective one? If funds are not an issue, what’s the best card for this system? HDD: WD enterprise drives for OS & storage Memory: 1Gig Dual channel DDR2 667 (twin matched pair Corsair) PSU: yet to select but would prefer a modular / cable management type Finally, would I just be better getting a GV Hot swap pre built system? Can you get them in the UK? Thanx for any advice

SMS & 3G features; any advice?

Hi All SMS feature I'm going to set up SMS messaging from the Geo system to a mobile; Geo site only shows one choice of SMS server as suitable, any one used this feature with success; with or without the Geo recommended kit? Interested to know the reliability of this function, the rough costs to implement and the false alarm rate if there is one. 3G Want to set up the 3G browsing feature to access Geo system from mobile, as above the Geo site only shows a limited choice of suitable mobiles, any one used this feature with success; with or without the Geo recommended kit? Especially interested in what service providers in the UK have been tested and perform adequately Interested to know the reliability of this function, the rough costs to implement and the false alarm rate if there is one. Would also like to know what amount of data is used with this feature, Data over 3G in the UK is pretty cost prohibitive so don’t want to use unless emergency / intrusion requires it really All advice gratefully appreciated, regardz FreeFlyer

    Geovision false alert reversal

Hi Little ScoobyMaster; Thomas & Rory Some police forces are starting to install the Neorodynamics systems here on motorways; it's allowing the camera operators the ability to do more in less time by basically waiting for the software to tell them when a vehicle is doing something it shouldn't do; I'm sure we'll find these systems becoming increasing popular in the "BigBrother" world we are living in. Airports are obviously the target areas for IVA systems nowadays, but in a nutshell from a buyers perspective, the benefits are immense when you think one static guard may cost you 20,000 US$ for 8 hours a day monitoring and they might miss something, with one system at roughly the same cost (Retail) you get 24/7 protection with a 95% accuracy level. Surely it's only a matter of time until Geo starts to expand their software functions to include some of these more advanced analysis features isn't it? Still I reckon you get great value for money with a Geo system / software as it is, but with the costs of the alternatives becoming less every day the gap is decreasing, wont Geo have to keep expanding the Scene detection/ intelligent analysis features to keep up with the competition in the future anyway?

Video Flashing - light to dark to light...

Isn't the effect that Kao is experiencing called blooming? I experienced the same problem a while back with a cheap OEM bullet. It happened when I put the camera on a wall facing the sun & only seemed to happen when the sun was beaming directly towards the camera; I put it down to the camera just not being able to deal with the high level of light and the iris going a bit MAD as it was a cheapo I moved it and it was fine. Kao; Regarding the coax testing; Get a video level meter; one that gives a self calibrating video sync & burst readout; and audio as well if your going to use this feature; I use one all the time now, cheaper than spending eons hunting for other problems where you dont have a clue what is causing them regardz; FF

    Geovision false alert reversal

IVA (Intelligent Video Analysis) systems are available; there are a few on the market here in the UK; They start with the same type of features that Geo offers, like missing object etc; but some are becoming really advanced. The majority work on scene analysis & differentiation. Depending on what system you select they offer features from Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) ; object counting, tracking & tracing (Speed / Size / Direction) and now more impressively Object Classification. Some of the features available are for monitoring humans: Access control Access to restricted areas & perimeters Overcrowding Suspicious packages Suspect behaviour People too close to the platform edge at stations Others are aimed at motorways Stationary traffic & jams Traffic counting; Type of vehicles passing, Lane use Illegal overtaking & tail-gating (Watch out you badass drivers!) NeuroDynamics offer a system that does intelligent scene analysis (iSAS) GE does a system called VideoIQ - a Human detection surveillance technology that detects human activity; This one learns new backgrounds automatically to distinguish between people, cars, animals trees etc. Been designed to work outside as well in support of security guards in minimising false alarms & identify real threats (marketing says 95% accurate!) Dallmeier do one called the DI-Detector Hope this helps, I'm aiming to get a demo of these in the coming months; will be aiming to supply them in the future, Happy to report my findings to anyone interested in the true performance of these systems when I've done this Regardz - FreeFlyer

    Help! Cable protection sleeve

Yeh! I'm being Scottish about it, dont wanna pay a sparky to do it when I have hands myself, just thought it would save the hassle if there was a ready to use kit for this task, off to the elec distributors it is then! P.S. Tested the EX14 on night vision last night, it's wicked, putting the system in this week, ordered a pre built hot swap 1480 rack system from Geo, as works hectic, kids are on holiday and I just don't have the time to spec & build a system myself, can't wait to have it all up & running. Laterz FF

    Help! Cable protection sleeve

Thanx Rory, Being a lazy git, I was wondering if there was an item or ready to use kit in the trade that came with the conduit ends capped / fitted with glands already, with or without a weatherproof (IP67) junction box? To save me having to buy a 10M roll of flexi conduit, cutting it, and fitting the glands etc. Do they exist? Regardz, FF
  13. I guess this really affects those of you who are either "buyers" or "suppliers" of equipment: Since 1st July 2006 there is new legislation in place that affects anyone selling in or importing goods into the EU & further afield too, with for example: 1. Large household appliances 2. Small household appliances 3. IT and telecommunications equipment 4. Consumer equipment 5. Lighting equipment 6. Electrical and electronic tools (with the exception of large-scale stationary industrial tools) 7. Toys, leisure and sports equipment 8. Medical devices (with the exception of all implanted and infected products) 9. Monitoring and control instruments 10.Automatic dispensers. Light bulbs, and luminaires in households The RoHS Directive stands for "the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment". This Directive bans the placing on the EU market of new electrical and electronic equipment containing more than agreed levels of lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) flame retardants. Manufacturers need to understand the requirements of the RoHS Directive to ensure that their products, and their components, comply. see here for more info http://www.rohs.gov.uk

    UPS query / recommendation?

yeh remember those days, still got the scars & dents the only way you'd get away with that here is if you had the secret handshake mate & even then you'd be pushing it way too far trying to get off, with video evidence you'd be pretty stuck, don't know of a country in the western world that put as many people in prison as ours, percentage wise I think we are the highest, unless of course you are a murderer or a peado or are just visiting the country as a refugee, then you can pretty much do what you like as I am sure you have gathered from our glorious press lately, no wonder vigilante groups are starting to take hold here, can't get a police response at the best of times.... Still ma shotguns always a back up if they come round ere, or they can have a double tap from the glock if they they wanna be fancy and come inside..rather just be submitting evidence from the Geo though, looking for a quiet life now - oh and lookin for the perfect beat.. laterz

    UPS query / recommendation?

Aint never been that easy here man, cams everywhere as well, it was my job to recruit the door teams and the aim was to get gents in place of the "bouncer" types, high class chain of clubs this was with VIP clients, stars & footballers etc; every time we had an incident I had to fill out a bloody report form, find the video history and generally had a visit form both the street bobbies as well as the licensing police too, real bloody hassle it was; gave that game up years ago now, life's been a lot quieter since, got some blinding stories & memories about it though, and the amount of offers ya'll get in that game is astounding, never had a cold bed if I didn't want it Got out the game after two guys had a bottle fight on a gay club night, blood everywhere & all that, the HIV think freaked the **** out of me so I hung up me bow tie - settled down & happily married with 2 beautiful kids now; peaceful life much better running tech business and a lot less hassle, just longer ours

    UPS query / recommendation?

I guess you weren't getting ready for halloween then, eh? last time I had a nail in my head was when I was running security for a large nightclub chain in the UK and some seriously tough party revellers were upset they were not admitted for being too far gone, turns out they was a rugby team of the buggers and they were "really" upset about it, what a night that was....

    GV-Mini DVR System

Yeh agreed naturally a decent Fwall is the answer, i see Asus are doing mainboards now with built in security features though, so I guess the industry is finally coming round at last; also as XPe is really cut down to the bare minimum, theres a lot less chance of having tools / services that are vulnerable to the usual attacks, less need to constantly update & all that too I am sure MS offer XPe software with up to 900 components that you can add and remove as you need, be interested to know what Geo have included and also deliberatly left out for stability etc; I'll do some research on XPe this coming week & let you know what i find Laterz

    UPS query / recommendation?

As is obvious by now, i'va a few quid stashed to do things properly so I am sure we could squeeze the old lemon a bit more for the right & best setup, let us know FYI; we have just won an out of court settlement against a large multinational Security Co (with three letters in the name) after they came here and seriously mucked up, broke all regs known to man in the security & electrical industry and kindly had their staff damage this old house in too many ways to explain, NSI investigator said it was the worst he's seen in 20 years, oh & one of their staff helped themselves to something from our house.....nuff sed It still took 4 1/2 years pursuing them and a lot of time, expense and stress to get to this outcome though

    GV-Mini DVR System

i read somewhere this week that XPe can be run off an embedded memory chip so that it stays in memory & doesn't need reinstalling, great idea...If this is the way they are using it though I guess..

    GV-Mini DVR System

Hi VF702 Tried to get one of these in the UK and no one stocks or offers them (don't know why) I mailed 3 distributors about them and didn't get one reply, obviously don't want the business me finks, then I mailed sales @geo and they replied asking if I wanted to become a distributor, I only wanted one to test it out to see if it's as good as it looks? I'd consider becoming a distributor if no one else is going to over here, I'm very interested in finding the price point here in the UK, they seem ideal for my customers needs and would save us a lot of mucking about. Can Anyone advise? The reason I was interested was the same as yours, that they were a ready built all in one solution without the usual range of issues concerning self build / setup / config / compatability etc been wanting this solution for a while, I say " title="Applause" /> to geo for doing it I reckon they could take the CCTV world by storm if they are reliable and priced correctly, I 'm led to believe they are embedded XP (XPe) is this correct? I mean ready to go with Geo features versus a stand alone, couldn't really ask for a better solution myself; I'm definately interested in an update on how they perform, build quality etc. Anyone out there tried em let us know please! Pity they dont do a 1480 version; I would order one right now if they did Regards - Freeflyer
