    cabling question

Overkill? no. If you run into any external issues in the future, overkill means no need to return to add the balun..... " title="Applause" />

CCTV signal to boost and split in 2

Ok, so cat 3 perhaps is not the best choice. Are you using existing wire or did you run the cat-3 yourself? If its existing, you should test your voltage drop, even if you get a good tone or have continuity. If you can, RUN CAT-5 or better yet CAT-6. Also, you may just amplifing noise and signal that is degraded. Try boosting the signal from Head-end, although be careful doing this, you dont want your signal/noise ratio to be wacky. Have you thought about getting powered-inline amp-baluns?

Guide to designing a CCTV system for homeowners

I have found that ZMODO has some very good, base level to mid level DVRs that offer what ever you need (PTZ, Remote monitoring, networking, HD, etc.). Buying the systems without a Harddrive makes them about 15% cheaper, just add your own. I always try and stay away from the Costco all in one packages but have found that even some of those can be acceptable. As stated in the beginning of this thread .... YOUR SYSTEM IS ONLY AS GOOD/STABLE AS ITS WEAKEST LINK!

    recovering old footage?

If the 80 gig drive was not replaced with a larger drive and your system is set for looping record that lead it to be recorded over then the answer is no . You may want to consider a networked DVR with an online backup option " title="Applause" /> . I am sorry to hear that this issue was not a solvable one.

    Tonemeister checking in.....

Hello fellow tech's, owners, enthusiasts and general users . I have been doing Audio, video, communication, and general low voltage systems for the past 12 or so years. Only lately have I started, or more been forced into, concentrating on CCTV. I quite enjoy giving my customers better solutions to their CCTV/AV needs than the last guy that was there and am looking forward to getting to know the rest of you people here on the CCTV forums Other stuff that I am into is music production on the side, along with live sound engineering. Hoping I can add some helpful answers and conversations as well as getting answers to the silly questions that I am sure I will be asking. Take care people and I look forward to getting to know you all. Tonemeister (chris)
