Dash Camera catches me whacking a dumb deer

Am I the only one who would have tried to see what happened to the deer before the car? And don't blame the deer or say it's a stupid animal; they did not have the chance to evolve quickly enough to know that roads are dangerous, considering cars have been deadly for them for about a hundred years only. Deers do what deers do, that's it. Glad you're okay though, I hope the deer did not suffer too much before he died. I would have called the cops as soon as I would have found him, to end his suffering.

Help setting up Ipad AIR viewing from Q-See DVR

Are you on Wifi? If so, you need the local IP for your DVR. For example connect to 192.168.0.###, where ### is the last three digits of the DVR's LAN address; not your modem's IP. All these router settings such as post forwarding are for connecting from outside of your home network (4G, work, Grandma's house, etc.).
  3. Q-See has all-metal cameras, the Lorex and Swann kit I have seen were plastic. It doesn't really change anything to the image but on the long run it may keep them in good condition for longer. Also, I live in Québec and we have very cold temperatures in the winter, so plastic may crack. The DVRs are good, and I haven't compared to the other brands, but their proprietary video file format is definitely something you want to avoid, especially if you're on Linux or Mac OS X.
  4. As far as I know this is still the way it's done in our modern age. My wife's grandmother lives in a huge residential complex and it goes through the regular coax cable into the cable box (digital), and it is a channel on the cable box. The channel itself seems to be analog but I could be wrong. I'm not sure if it would work without the cable box as it is included in the rent cost, so everyone has it.

    Help Qsee QT474

I know you said you disconnected the hard drive, but did you try booting the system? http://qsee.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/437 Because that's what they say if you follow this link. If it doesn't work, send it for repair.

Caught on camera- landscapers behaving badly

In most jurisdictions that is dead wrong for several reasons. Legally you do not give up ownership by putting trash on the curb, you transfer ownership to another party (hired directly or indirectly by you to pick it up). If trash spills out of the bin before it is picked up you can be held responsible and liable. Third thing to concider is that privacy laws forbid going through someones trash. Police can go through EVERYTHING when evidence collecting in an investigation, for wich they need varying degrees of reasonable suspicion up to signed warrants or court orders to do so. They can not go through it "for fun" or just to check you out. In my jurisdiction (Québec) no one can go through your trash at the curb except the company hired to pick it up, at which point the ownership is transferred. This means that the police needs a warrant to search your trash.

who makes a good DVR bundle?

I bought a Q-See bundle from Costco (SD). I am very happy with it, but like others said, there are things that you can't do and some flaws in the software (for example, I want to remove my swimming pool from the motion detection, even though I did it, the cameras are still being recorded if the water moves because of the wind...). That being said, for me needs it's almost perfect, and definitely a good purchase. I had to upgrade the hard drive to 2 TB to get about a month of recording (an extra $120). I think this is like building a PC, if you know what you're doing, you should still consider whatever is available on the market, and do the math (could be cheaper to buy a bundle on sale, and upgrade one or two components). If you have no idea, do some research or buy a bundle; in a few years you can learn and upgrade as needed.

Best security camera system for 500.00

Hi, You won't find much for this price. I paid a little above $500 a year ago for an analog system, 8 cams + DVR (Q-See) but it was a Costco sale and the regular price was closer to $800. This was also a product near its end of life, as recent systems are now in HD. I've been very happy with the quality of the DVR and the cameras (metal housing!) but there are flaws, so shop around you might find something similar. As for connecting only to the DVR from your router, this is easy, just do not allow the ports to be accessed from outside (you actually have to take actions to do this, so by default most routers will not give you access). As for the bandwidth, if you're only staying on your home network, it will have zero effect on your internet consumption. If your question was about the bandwidth on your home network, it should be marginal (cheap routers will give you 54 Mbps, your DVR shouldn't use more than 5 Mbps in HD, much less in SD).
  9. That's why an alarm system should be part of any security planning. The thieve will know he has 5-10 minutes top until the cops show up, so he's more likely to visit the neighbours (if you have stickers and the panel is visible from outside). If you have cameras on top of that, he won't be wasting previous minutes trying to find the DVR, he'll probably skip that house. But if it does happen, if the DVR is secured he can smash it all he wants, if the alarm is making noise he'll just want to get out of there ASAP with stuff he can resell.

Newbie... is this a good outdoor setup?

Having worked for a couple years behind the controller on a professional system (mostly Pelco cameras), I can assure you that as far as I know, there are only three ways to get a license plate from a "regular" CCTV system. 1- you're controlling a PTZ and manage to zoom on the plate; 2- there is only one way in/out and you install a fixed camera with a good resolution, it will only be used for that purpose; 3- plain luck, that is the car moves in the right spot, at the right time with the perfect lighting, and does not move too fast (or a PTZ managed to catch the plate if it's not still). Of course you could buy a system that is built just for that like they use at the US border or for photoradars, these will take a picture, not record a movie, so the resolution is much, much better, and I know they work well in near total darkness as well. I have no idea how much they cost though, probably a few thousands. You can also have another camera that takes a picture of the driver. And if there is a flash at night, and the driver can see it, I think he will leave in a matter of seconds!

    Hello from Edmonton, Alberta CANADA

I could see this becoming a problem, but with the milkman gone, the mailman not coming at the door anymore and the door to door salesmen a thing of the past, it's already a bad time to be a naughty housewife!

Q-See DVR and bigger HD than supported

That's the thing, companies are usually frisky about sharing "unsupported" modifications, even though they might work. That's why I was wondering if someone gave it a try. If I have too much money one day, I'll try!

    Hello from Edmonton, Alberta CANADA

The police can enter any premises without a mandate if they have the right excuse/a good reason to do so; hearing gunshots would be one of those excuses. They possibly called him just because they could not get in, although they could just ram the door, so I find this story a bit fishy!

I need a lot of advice!

I know it's not funny, but sorry man, I can't stop laughing!
  15. Hi everyone, I just bought a Q-See system with the QT-548 DVR. It comes with a 500 GB pre-installed, and I just bought a 2TB AV HD; however I was wondering if anyone has tried installing something bigger than what is officially supported (they do sell 3TB after all). Just curious!
