Setup suggestions for new GV800 user

Again, i suggest reading some more of the threads in this topic, try this: http://www.cctvforum.com/viewtopic.php?p=6518&highlight=#6518 we've picked up tonnes of tips for geo systems from some of the guys on this forum. so far, i would say you have a perfect motherboard and processor for the job. We're using the same memory, but for a gv650 build, for gv800, try the professional kingston range or corsair twinx was recommended by dvr_expert and has excellent performance. use 2X256DDR rather than 1 512 stick, you'll get better performance. I've never seen the need for high end graphic cards, go with a good brand i.e. saphire ati series, also make sure it supports direct draw overlay so you can use fullscreen mode. we've even used the cheaper sapphire ATI Radeon 9200SE 128MB for some of our older gv800 systems with good results. is it for home use or are you providing installation for a customer?

    Linsys routers

Think you're right, the wag54G has a dsl rj11 socket connection, the other one has a wan connection, so you'd need an additional dsl modem. Thanks for clearing that up. Whats the difference between pppOA and pppOE, and why is it with the pppoA option, you can't enter the static IP youve been given by your ISP??
  3. Rory, same here, we've had some real cable running miracles! actually we've had some bad ones too, we were working for a major client couple months back, one of my engineers was running alarm cable through suspended ceiling, anyway, he slipped of his ladder and grabbed onto the ceiling tile frame, ripping down about half the suspended celiing! It only toook us a couple of hours to sort out, but was a real pain! Yea looks like your sorted for issue1, for issue2, you can use a web based e-mail site check out (www.mail2web.com). You can use the web based on the second comp. Only problem is if you open outlook express on the 1st comp, it'll download the e-mail of the server so you wont be able to check them again from the web based email site on the second comp. Mind you, you could ignore outlook altogether and use the internet based site for both comps. Hope some of this info helped

  5. I haven't tried the kodicom remote transmission, but the geovision is fairly impressive, especially the multiview program- you can watch selected cameras from different sites in one screen (ideal for clients with multiple shops). You don't actually need to install any software on your clients computer in order to view remotely, just bang in the IP and you have it. Also, you have the ability to adjust transmission quality, so you can get faster speeds. I'm not sure how is compresses the video over a network but i know geovision has its own compression method called geompeg4 which means faster transmission and better compression so you can store more video. Also, you also have the ability to playback recorded video remotely, get system info to check if there's any video loss, check what IPs have been accessing the system and tonnes more. I haven't tried the 'remote control' feature from the remote view but i think that allows you to actually take control of the geo system remotely in case you need to adjust some setting. Hope some of this info helped, would also be interested in kodicoms remote transmission, havent tried their products yet.

    Controlling geovision systems

Cheers Baywatch, that would be ideal becuase cat5 cable is fairly cheap and easier to run than VGA cable. would really appreciate it if you could let me know who manufactures these units, Thanks again!

    Controlling geovision systems

I want to give my customer the ability to control the geovision system from the front of the store. The till is about 50 feet from the office where i've installed the geo system. Would it be possible to just run a stranded alarm cable and give him a keyboard at the front? Also is it ok to run a 50ft vga cable to the system without loosing picture quality? What are my options? Thanks for your support in advance guys, i know most of you probably getting ready for your christmas holidays, not down here probably gonna end up working on christmas day!

    Geovision Firmware

Thats right, you need to upgrade the SP to S1 but only if you want to use V6.1 software, you can use up to v6.05 without any problems. I think the S1 chip was just a requirement for v6.1 software to beat dodgy cards, not firware as such. Hope this helps

    Controlling geovision systems

Apart from using KVM over IP, what other technology is out there? Is there such think as a VGA booster, to boost the video signal. One more question if i used the real time dsp card, could i run the phono cable direct to a monitor without receiving picture loss? i guess it would be like a normal cctv monitor output then? Baywatch, i tried a wireless keyboard, but it didn't work, i think the distance between the office and till is too far apart, i was using one of the logitech keyboards around £100, the receiver was at the system end, so do i need to run it closer to the till? Thanks for your feedback

    VGA cards

Can you use full screen mode on both ends with the ati 9800 pro? I connected a second monitor via the DVI connector on my video card (9550 pro) and i had to disable directdraw overlay, so i had 2 monitors working but without fullscreen mode, any ideas?

    gv800 freezes up with cameras

Hi, from the looks of your spec, it looks like the problem is with your motherboard. From what i know, that protact mboard is VIA chipset, Geo doesn;t support VIA chipset for gv800. Its gonna be a pain in the ass but you'll have to replace the motherboard. We use the asus p4c800edeluxe after many recommendations from some guys on this forum. Also i would avoid using wd hdds, again read a few of the hundreds of geo threads, you'll see what i mean! And we were also recommended to use 2X256 sticks rather than 1 512DDR, you'll get better performance (dual ddr technology). Hope some of this info helped man, good luck!

You might need to take a look at this topic to get more infor about shuttle pcs and geovision. http://www.cctvforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=555 I had the same query, right now, i only have 2 geo systems running on shuttle pcs, ones a gv800-8 way, which ive had no probs with and another gv650-8 which i only installed recently so im waiting for something to happen! However we only used these due to space limitations, the guy had all his cables into a small little cupbord, if i could i would avoid it!

    Controlling geovision systems

I think this is the biggest problem with geovision systems, it simply is not practical to install in retail environment. I would love to use features like object counter, motion pop-up, POS etc but our customers need to be able to control the system, have a call monitor, and all that. Well im not saying its impossible, just means testing out new technology and living with months of phone support until you get it right! Anyway i managed to connect a second monitor up, but with that option i can't use directdraw overlyay so i cant have full screen. what other options do you have with geo systems?.

    Speco DVR

Lol, yea i was wondering why you put down POS! Im guessing you meant Piece of S***! Whats so bad about it apart from the webserver, im interested because i installed my first one the other week and didn't get time to test all the features. My supplier said the dvr was similar to the DM sprite DVR and was in competition with it! Yea right !

    Speco DVR

Rory, is there any kalatel DVRs which offer POS? Just interested because you're right, Norbain rebadge the Kalatel DVRs as Vista. I had a norbain rep over the other week and was demonstrating the "columbus" dvr, i very impressed with the remote view quality. I think the speco DVR is actually made by dynacolor in Taiwan. Its not a bad standalone, but you're right again about the webserver, poor quality at its best! I was trying to avoid using it but my customer wanted a remote keyboard to control it so i used it in preference to the new argus DVRwith built in CDRW.

    gv-1000

Joe, when you update the driver what happens? It should install the driver. Otherwise do what herminshs says and download the drivers from the geo site and i just tried it, once you extract the files and run the DrivINs program, it automatically installs the drivers, never tried that before!

    gv-1000

Joe, Have you installed the Geovision drivers? Go to Control panel-system- hardware-device manager. If you see yellow question marks next to the drivers under video/audio it means you have not installed the geovision drivers. Remove the geovision program from the Add/Remove button in control panel first. Then double click each driver in the device manager, click the driver tab and then click "Update driver", make sure your geo cd is in the drive. Do the same for all the drivers and then install the geovision program, should solve your problem.
  21. Just read this the other day in the ASMAG: " 50% of New CCTV systems are PC-networked - An oline survey carried out jointly by Norbain SD and CMP information has revealed 50% of new CCTV systems are integrated with computer networks for viewing, transmitting or storing captured CCTV footage -20 % of the audience said 100% of their installations involve a link to a computer network of some kind" Article goes on to talk about CCTV-IT integration is becoming the norm rather than the exception. "This has many implications. Installers need an additional set of skills when linking CCTV systems to existing networks but they also need to be able to advise their customers of implications of networked transmission and storage topics such as data protection act" Personally I agree with cooperman, its gonna take some time before convergence becomes mainstream. However, must say theres tonnes of computer VARs down here who are going into CCTV and yet know jack about it, They see CAT5 cabling and these Axis cameras and jump straight into the deep end, ive been shocked at some of the prices these guys have quoted to some of my customers for "new revolutionary CCTV". (To me its a bunch of ugly cameras). However im a bit unsure to whether cctv will transform itself like the PBX-VOIP, just have to wait and see!

    Strange monitor problem

Hi guys, im having this strange monitor problem. I have an ATI 9600pro video card. I have 1 monitor connected to the d-sub connector and the other to the DVI. When i go into the display settings and enable "extend my windows desktop onto this monitor" i get a blank blue screen on the second monitor. I want both the monitors to display the same screen, so they both mimic what i do on the computer. Whats happening is, the second monitor is displaying a blank screen and it is extending the screen, so if i continue to move my mouse on monitor 1 to the right rather than stopping at the edge of the screen it is going on to the second monitor. I can drag the internet explorer to the right and it will extend onto the second monitor. What setting to i have to enable/disable for both of the screens to mimic what i'm doing. I tried to drag the second monitor onto the monitor 1 in the display settings where it says "Drag the monitor icons to match the physical arrangement of your monitors". Thanks for the support in advance

    Strange monitor problem

won't the image screw up if i connect both monitors on one vga cable? Ive managed to get it working, for anyone with the same problem, you don't 'extend the monitor' to the second display. You go in the advanced tab and click the 'displays' tab and do it from there. Ive connected a camera using geovision but i'm getting a pink screen if i go in fullscreen mode. Do i need a more powerful video card?
