I finally received my 6 DS-2CD2332-I, and I can say that I'm very happy with the video quality !

Now I think of having alarms, and I'm wondering how many kind of alarms exist and how they are sorted.

What comes to me:

Information alarms (tells me something's wrong)

1. Email

2. SMS

Dissuasive alarms (makes the thief go away)

1. Siren

2. Two ways audio (to speak directly through the camera)

Do you see more categories/alarms ?

1 - What you are looking for is iVMS-4500 for Android or iPhone.

2 - You can, but you would need to have IP camaras with alarm outputs.

So if I buy a camera with alarm output, I can just plug a siren alarm, and through hik webui trigger manually my siren, right ???

That sounds great, many ways to activate it.

What interests me most, is to activate it by hand remotely.

Two cases :

1. I have a NVR, alarm in connected to my NVR. I get an alert on my mobile phone. I check it and it's not a bird but a thief. Oh my god ! Through my app (need to find which one, it's an other problem), can I activate the sound alarm ?
   
2. I don't have a NVR, but 6 cams. One of them is connected to my sound alarm (let's say cam number 2). A thief is coming, an I receive an alert from cam number 5. Is there a way for me (through my mobile app) to tell cam number 2 to activate sound alarm ?

On some NVR, (hikvision for me) I see there is 1 alarm input/output.

Let's say my NVR in plugged into a "sound alarm" (I don't know if it's the right word, but I guess you understand me ).

When will the sound alarm be launched? On motion detection of one cam, of all cams or something else ?

First time I see a Wireless Remote Control Power Outlet, I didn't know it existed, what a cool stuff !!!

To turn on/off easily, with wired cams you just have to power them through PoE.

Once connected to a NVR (or a PoE switch), you will just have to turn off the NVR (or switch) to turn off all your cams (or just unplug the ethernet cable of the camera you want to turn off).

I don't know cams having a power button, that would be a real security issue (everybody would be able to turn it off - but thieves would thank you for that help for sure )

Didn't see a lot of cameras like this, though. Only a couple tabletop cams from what I could find.

I'm pretty sure most of Hikvision cams can do what you want :

1. HD : Yes, as least 1280x760 at 25FPS
   
2. Notifies on motion detection (email - ftp)
   
3. Can be checked from your smartphone through apps
   
4. What do you mean by "can be easily turned on/off" ?
   
5. records video on motion detection. Can record ON SITE or OFF SITE (just mount your Dropbox as NFS partition and you'll be able to record on it - but you should have a really good internet connection !)
   
6. Good IR on these cams
   
7. From $100 to $250 for good models

Wifi sucks, I do agree with that !!!

Moreover, don't think that "WIFI" means "no wire".

Power will be supplied for a long time through wires...

So you have 2 reasons to stay with Ethernet :

1. as many cable as wifi (PoE so 1 cable for both network and power, on WIFI cams 1 cable for power)
   
2. maximum reliability !

But the choice is up to you...

In linux parameters (web or not) are usually stored in text files, not in binaries.

But you're right about "date"

And on embedded systems things tend to get compiled together into as fewer files as possible to improve performance.

Yes (often) and no (sometimes), some langages (script langages - no compilation) are really performants and are used a lot (Python for example).

IMHO, WIFI is not ready for video recording.

The reasons are :

1. You need top wifi card on cameras and top wifi router to prevent loss connection (WIFI reliability sucks !)
   
2. You always have one of your cameras which is out of range (damn, I will break this f**** wall ! )
   
3. Don't use your laptop to download or view streaming series on the web, whether your download will suck or your cameras won't record anything (depends on your WIFI router QoS)
   
4. Don't record more than X cameras through WIFI (generally 4), because your WIFI won't handle it
   
5. WIFI doesn't mean no wire...you'll still have to power it up !

At home, my WIFI router (linksys ea6900 which is a really good one right now) is only used for my laptops, mobile phones, printers, TV.

For my cameras, all are wired/powered with a single cable (PoE) and connected to a dedicated gigabit switch with PoE...Reliability : 100%

Days are stored in a binary file...so bad, that's definitely not the way Linux is meant to be.

Sorry to say that but Foscam are bad cameras...if you want cameras that do the stuff you say and that are reliable, then you'll have to pay at least $120 each

If hikvision cameras are based on Linux/Unix and accessible through Telnet or SSH, then I guess it's only a small text file on the system in which are written all days.

Therefore I don't think it's related to the possibility to install English firmware, but maybe there is an other file that contains options like enabling (or not) english firmware.

In fact I don't know how many SMS will be sent, because if there is no alert at all, there will be 0 SMS, but I keep the control on what I pay each month (sort of money security).

I now have a technically question: Is there a way to control how often alerts are sent ?

For example, a thief walks in my camera's field. An alert is sent. A few seconds later he's not in the camera's field anymore but he forgot his tools to break my door (what a bad thief ) and goes back to his car so again my camera see him in the field...an other alert is sent ???

With all the tools he comes back...again in the camera field ! Alert ?

When all is finished he return to his car (again in the camera's field, alert ?)

So for a same action, 4 alerts are sent, aren't they ? (and it costs me up to 40 sms ! )

Or is there a way to control it (after an alert is sent, wait X minutes before sending a new one) ?

Yes, I saw the "email to sms" companies on the web.

For me, two disadvantages :

1. the cost : my GSM modem (40€) + unlimited SMS (2€/month) costs me 64€ the first year, then 24€/year. Using "email to sms" companies, if I send only 1 SMS per day it will cost me about 27€ which is already more than my own solution (maybe you think 1 SMS per day is huge, but in fact when I will send an alert, I will send it to several mobile phones from 2 to 10 at a time. So 1 SMS per day is not huge from my point of view)
   
2. the reliability : in France mobile networks are far more reliable than internet networks

@MindTwist : I know google can do email to SMS but is it really reliable ? Until now, the only google feature I tried is to connect to other mailbox I own to download all my emails on my google account and this simple feature doesn't work !!!

About the script on receiving an email how can I do ? I mean I don't have a local email server so I can't receive any email locally sent by the camera (so I would have to write a script that reaches my mailbox on the web checks the emails and then sends a SMS ? that would give me a headache for sure ! )

@buellwinkle : I know that, but it only works with US providers. In france we don't have this feature (you are so lucky !), our providers don't allow such cool things

An other idea came to me : I can send my alert through FTP (hikvision cameras can do this easily) to my small server. Then I just need to write a script that checks my FTP directory and send an SMS when something is put in it. I don't have to rely on anybody and I don't have to modify my hikvision scripts. Sounds good, doesn't it ?

Is there a way to do it ?

Theorically, here is my proposal :

1. On motion detection my camera sends something to my server (a small windows or linux server).
   What can be sent ? only emails ?
   
2. On reception, my server launch a small script to connect to my GSM modem and send a SMS

Does someone have any idea for the first point ?

Is it possible to log into the camera (SSH or Telnet) ?

If yes does someone know where to find the script on the camera OS that launches emails (I would modify it - create a new one - to send the informations to my server through ssh for example).
