    IR Illumination

    thank you!

    IR Illumination

I think instead of kicking up the IR on my REGL1, I'm going to augment with an IR Illuminator. Here at Microsoft, they use the Aegis IR's, but those are pretty spendy. I need to cover out about 30-40ft, but a wide area. The Axis seems nice as the 50-100 adjustable seems to give me the flexibility to figure out the width of coverage I need. My REGL1 covers an 18ft wide road (and yes, I know the specs), 16mm lens, but I set the focal point out farther (so smaller plate pic), but need alot of IR to cover the area evenly. Any thoughts on the axis, or something similar?

    ExtremeCCTV REGL1 problems?

Which lens did you get? What do you think is the maximum field width in which the plate is still readable? Best, Christopher 16mm, I'm running actually a wider field than extreme recommends, and then zoom the image. 15-20 is their setting, I'm and around 25ft I think.

    ExtremeCCTV REGL1 problems?

If there is enough sun, it will work without the IR, if not, you wont get anything. But the IR is on 24x7. So as I said, they are totally reliant upon reflectivity, and this is straight from extreme.

    ExtremeCCTV REGL1 problems?

there is no photo cell for the RegL1's, the IR is on 24x7, its the only way the unit even works. The IR reflectivity of the plate is what the camera catches. No IR, no picture.

    License Plate Cameras

The 75mm will cover a MAX width of 10ft, thats it. I have the smaller one, which focuses roughly 15-20ft, and gives about a 14ft width coverage. I dont see how the IR beam can be optimzed, its just a big emitter. I used to have a 75mm, worked well, but my road is 18ft wide, so I'd loose plates. Honestly, I'm less than impressed with them for 2 reasons (ok, 3). 1> Problems I've had with mine (IR going out 2 times now). 2> The IR's do have alife expectancy of around 5 years, then its a large bill to replace. 3> The reliance upon plate reflectivity. Capturing front plates is almost worthless. Plates with covers (plexi) same.

    License Plate Cameras

THE REGL1's rely upon the IR reflectivity of plates. The downside, is if someone has those plexi covers over their plates, you wont get a plate. Or if the plate is dirty, or old. I'd like to know how the municipalities get such good plate shots all the time with the red light cams.

    ExtremeCCTV REGL1 problems?

I've had mine for 4 years now, and about to go back for repair again. A year ago the IR went out on it, and just this morning, it did it again. Tech Support wasnt much help, and repair guys weren't either. Last time was under warranty, I guess this time it wont be. I'd rather not keep fixing it, if its going to continue to be a problem, as every one of these times costs me a couple hundred bucks to have the camera pulled, and put back in again later.

    Camera Suggestions

Want the camera's visible as a deterent, or hidden? Box camera's and enclosure's are very visible. I have Samsung SDC-415's (day Night) and with just abit of area lighting (and sens up) they are a very good day night camera covering easily areas larger than yours for not big money. Contrary to the group opinion here, installing a system isnt a big deal. System selection is. To the plus side, if you have a system installed, you have technical support. If you can wing it on your own, then save the money. Do you want really good motion detection, or so so. I've found most DVR's covering a field of view as big as yours and larger, have poor motion detection. I had to go with external motion sensors (and they arent cheap), but they'll really tell you if someone is around. There's alot to learn here on this site if you take the time to read it.

    REG L1 LPR failures...

I boosted the IR up to max and I'm back to 90%+ recognition. I'm still awiating a response from ExtremeCCTV as to whether I've a camera problem, or what. They tell the IR is good for 5 years, and I think I'm just past 1 year. They told me long ago, that this time of year (NW) plates get abit of road dirt and cuts down the reflectivity of the plate. Yea, I'll buy that. So my question to extreme is what do other folks do this time of year, the same thing I did, and then turn it back down come spring? No answer yet.

    REG L1 LPR failures...

as my nightime pics, arent near to yours. All I'd see is the tailights and license. It appears from the reflection on the bumper, there is some illumination of the area. I'm still thinking about illuminating the area some, just to see how or if it helps. The current area has no illumination at all.

    REG L1 LPR failures...

They really arent that dirty, and are easily visible in the same camera during the day. But a clean plate, shows up well. Or a newer one.

    REG L1 LPR failures...

In discussions with ExtremeCCTV, I've learned their LPR camera's are highly dependant on the reflectivity of license plates. Plastic covers over license plates defeats any LPR at nightime. Even dirty or older plates fail. Has anyone else experienced these sorts of problems, and what have you done to eliminate them? I guess I could illuminate the view area to help more at nightime? Any other thoughts?

    License Plate Recognition Cameras

The Reg cam's are dependant on two factors. One, correct amplitude of the IR output.(its adjustable) Two, the reflectivity of the license plate. If a plate is dirty, or old, the Extreme wont pick up a plate. (in the dark). This info comes not only from personal experience, but from Extreme's support group as well.

    Motion sense versus record 24x7

I've found MD to be pretty poor, unless the motion objects are quite sizeable in comparision to the screen size. As a better alternative to 24x7 recording, I installed IR motion detection to initiate recording as well.
