    Firewall penetrators

Here's the other side of that wall. Shows a complete install but can't hardly see the bad part. These aren't unique's firestops btw.
  2. Yeah, Cool Stuff! Have you ever used it? looks pricey. Do you get Cabling Business Magazine? I think I may have seen rapidrun featured there. We did an install were we ran a bunch of pre-made VGA cables for a client. What a nightmare... Never did find an easy way to do it. We used pull socks but it was still snaggy.

    Firewall penetrators

No problem! I'm sorry I don't have a wider shot. There is actually a sign-off label attached below the penetrator. I'll see if I have a better picture...

Welcome to California! Oh, wait. Wildfires in May so I thought you were talking California... Pretty scary stuff. That must have been a spot fire huh? I'm guessing if it was the front line your brother-in-law would have been packing instead of filming... Or was that your sister filming?

Cost for basic CCTV with DVR???

$5000 is a good ballpark. Should be able to get it for less then that in most markets but it's a good ballpark.

    Flashlight DVR

I saw one on "CSI" the other day. If I remember right the news crew handed one to one of the investigators as she was entering a crime scene. They made it look like it was sending the video out wirelessly. The most believable part of the show was the crappy picture the flashlight was putting out!
  9. Not Country crime stats. County crime stats.

    Lightning strike

You know, I think a better solution to inline fuses would be a Transient voltage suppressor. We use them all the time in Telecom building entrance equipment. They have either oil filled, or electronic based. But ours clamp at about 125volts. I would guess they make them to clamp at most voltages though. I thought of them because they protect both tip and ring with one suppressor. All the ones I have seen use ground for a reference point. So if you aren't grounding these may not work for you. And as rory said, brownouts get him. Could have been a brownout after the strike that got you too. Is your power supply on an APC?

    Lightning strike

Wouldn't hurt (unless you are drawing more then an amp ) But I doubt it would help much unless it is minor transient voltages that hit ya. Also you would have to fuse both wires, not just the hot side.

    Lightning strike

Yes, and Yes! There are a lot of interesting threads on this site about lightning. Personally, I use ample bonding and surge suppression (it's required by the local AHJ). I see lots of guys that subscribe to the "isolation" theory too. But I have swapped out plenty of equipment that has failed from both practices.
  15. here are a couple of things I would try: Putting the DVR in your "DMZ" You sound like you know this stuff, but if not... The DMZ is a setting in the router that will basically allow all traffic to the LAN address you enter. In this case the DVR's IP of 192.169.1.10 If that doesn't work I would leave the DVR in the DMZ and try connecting without going through your dnydns address. Connect using your WAN address. If you don't know it go to http://ipchicken.com from any computer connected to the same router as the DVR. That page will tell you your WAN IP address. then in your web broswer you would go to http://69.12.141.101:888 (for example) I would then connect the DVR straight to the modem and test from there. DVR settings would have to be changed accordingly. I don't know how well this would work for you. Is your router set to get its WAN by DHCP, PPPoE or other? If that didn't work I would completely default the router and try again. I'm still leaning towards an issue with the port forwarding on the Router. That doesn't necessarily mean there is something entered wrong. These little linksys' are good units but can be quirky on this kind of stuff sometimes. And the reason I'm thinking its the router is because you CAN get to the router through dyndns and you are getting there on port 888 so that doesn't seem to be blocked. But you are getting the linksys login screen instead of the DVR's login screen. Seems to me if the router was forwarding but the DVR wasn't working right you would get a "page not found" type error, not bounced back to the router login. You don't have anything else set to portforward to port 888 do you? Like 192.168.1.1? Also you must have remote administer setup on the linksys if you can hit if from the outside. Is there a port setting for that? It isn't set to 888 is it?
  16. ok, sounds like you are making the right settings. something is just wacky. I think the issue is the portforwarding page of your linksys router. The setting you are changing are on a page that looks similar to (but different then) this?: [/img]
  17. Hi vikeher, sounds like you are on the right track. The fact that you can log into your router through your dyndns account tells me you have your DDNS set up correctly. Once you are logged into your router setup page you have another step to take. You need to find the settings for your "Port forwarding" This will be a linksys page and you will be entering you DVR's IP address (192.168.1.10) and the ports to forward would be the 888 that you set up in the DVR settings. So in closing, you say that you change the port # many times. Are you making this change in the DVR settings or in the Linksys settings?

Stuck in an elevator for 41 hours!

He did get money out of it. Some people said it was substantial, others say it wasn't enough. I tried reading the story in the new yorker but it was too long.

    account problem

Whenever I am having problems with these boards I clear my cache and cookies and try again.
  20. Glad it worked out. And yep sounds real similar to what I was describing. They seem to use MAC for a catch-all phrase that can really mean any string of numbers that they have no better name for.
  21. If the setup works from your brothers house I would guess you are set up correctly. Maybe there is some port blocking going on? I would try using port 80 for testing purposes.

    TV Tuner Cards

I'm not the site ambassador, But I do apologize that you did not get any answers. As you said, you looked yourself and there was no talk of TV tuner cards. So my guess is not many people around here have experience with them. We could have posted 40 "I don't know" replies but that wouldn't have been very helpful either. To put it in perspective, I have been hanging around here off and on for 3 or 4 years and I have a number of "0 reply" questions posted. If nobody knows, nobody knows. It's not a noob thing and I hope you won't take it personally. The good news is you contributed good info and now we have some tv tuner card info. Thank you for sharing your findings!
  23. Yeah, it does look handy to have. Please let us know the outcome of the battery issue. Thanks.
  24. I haven't had the pleasure of using an AverMedia product yet. But I did install a DVR that was talking about entering your MAC address. I was pulling my hair out trying to figure out what they were talking about. Finally figured out they meant IP address! So maybe it is a translation issue. Wish I could remember where I ran into that problem... Might have been a JDVR from ARM?
