  1. You can buy say a Nikon camera that is 16mp for $99 and one for $1,500, does that mean Nikon is overcharging me when I want the $1,500 camera? I don't think the market would support 7-10x markup on a camera. You can count how many companies make a 5MP camera with 30fps on one hand with 4 fingers cut off, so if it's so simple, why doesn't Dahua or Hikvision do it? Heck why don't the other high end companies do it?

FYI I have the 6MP 30fps Hikvision camera

  2. Just remember you get what you pay for and there is a reason some VMS software is free.

I would also recommend you order the cameras from a authorized US distributor and don't order direct from China. Hikvision is starting to shut this supply chain down, lock the firmware and will not support these cameras in the US.

A 40 - 60 camera IP system is not a small system and if this is your first time installing one you will need support at some point.

  3. What are your ping times from your remote location to the sit with the recorder?

I would be very interested to see the quality of the 1MB/.5MB link

What are the bandwidth settings for each channel of the encoders?

FYI you can change the display quality of your remote client only which will not effect the recorded video.

@ Remote Client > Client settings > Display> Change Display Quality (High is the default)

Another option would be to use the HTML5 web interface. As it trans codes the video for lower bandwidth connections.

  4. With Avigilon we can use this unit from Moxa to add trigger I/O to the system if we need more than what the cameras can provide. Another option is to get a cheap encoder which has trigger I/O. Most of the 4 channel encoders have 4 inputs / 4 outputs

I would check Milestones supported list and see what network I/O devices they work with.

  5. That's funny about Windows PC being too big because I yet to find a NVR that's as small as my PC. I use an i5 Intel NUC, it's about 4.5" square, holds a 2TB drive and I run Milestone XProtect, very reliable with 10 cameras at least. I hide it so it's not so easily stealable.

Do you have a link for where you can buy such a PC (or parts if you built it yourself)? I've never seen any that small. Thin clients yeah, but not actual PCs that can run full blown Windows and CCTV monitoring software.
