  1. How many hard drives in the unit and what capacity? First thing to check is the available power - with this particular unit at around 6v the recording icons will dissapear as the drive stops spinning properly, usually at around this level the unit cannot detect the drive either.

     

    The start up power demand of a 500GB hard drive differs vastly to that of a 2TB unit. Initially these units came out with 2A power supplies and as the Hard Drive capacities increased, so did the stock power supply capacity - I think they are currently shipped with 5A units. If you are using anything other than the stock power supply or larger capacity drive than the unit supports - the most common cause of this problem is that the dvr is not getting enough power to get the hard drive platter to spin at it's desired RPM. Use a larger capacity power supply unit, and see if that sorts out the problem --- ordinarily this problem is associated with the no hard drive beep at startup.


  2. What coax cable are you using? Try to keep the two seperate by a few inches, and get the electrician to make sure that the 220 is properly grounded.

     

    Not sure of your lightning potential, but such a deployment could be very susceptible to transient surges in high lightning potential areas, wich is why you have seen fibre recommended. ordinarily I would second that, depending on the number of cameras and spacing between them the cost of media conversion with fibre over a short run like that could add significantly to costs. This needs to be weighed up against the costs of protecting the coaxial lines against transients.

     

    The cost of IP media converters is more favorable as compared to analog media converters, and these days you could pick up some D1 or VGA IP cameras quite inexpensively - (Since you've initially spec'd analog i am assuming you don't need higher resolution than)

     

    The most significant factor at this distance is naturally cost.

     

    Up to 500ft RG59 will give at least twice the quality of image at the DVR as utp (Passive) and 300m is a bit short for active utp.

     

    So if fibre is out of the question - just try to get 30cm between the 220V and coaxial and make sure the 220 is properly grounded and definitely check your locations annual lightning strike statistics per square meter -transient protection could be quite expensive, maybe just tipping the fibre feasibility.


  3. Unless one follows a thorough process prior to provisioning a cctv system, you will find that the majority of your expenses will be in returning to a customers site to redo, move, reposition cameras.

     

    Before ever installing a camera, you should make sure that the customer understands and visualizes exactly what he is going to get.

     

    We spend a lot of time on compiling the initial operational requirements - in order that a specific measure is established when performance is disputed. Customers sign off the operational requirements before we compile the technical specifications. The technical specifications flow from the OR and describe the motivations behind the decisions taken, as to transmission media mountings, resolutions, recording, etc. Once again the customer signs this off before we commence with installation.

     

    At this stage we develope a detailed scope of work - which basicly highlights each task to be performed and the materials to be used - once agreement is reached on the scope of work, we commence with installation.

     

    Post installation we go through the hand over process , which is greatly simplified by the presence of the OR, TS and SOW. Usually the handover is just a formality in which the customer signs off each element of the Scope Of Work, and acknowledges that the objective defined in the OR has been met.

     

    While this may seem to be a lot of work, without it - a lot of your companies resources will be spent on modifying installs, before you get paid.

     

    While this may not help you with this particular install, since you mentioned it is your first - you might want to look into similar processes going forward to avoid this kind of thing. In addition, these processes will ensure that you actually do address your customers expectations.


  4. I would like to apologize to any who may have been offended by my recent comments on this forum.

     

    I last commented in this forum around 2004. While searching subjects related to my company recently, i returned results in which members of this forum where trashing - in a very unprofessional manner, my company and an article which we had published . I was annoyed at the fact that rather than raise any concerns with the author of an article, going beyond the content of the article , professionals would see it fit to trash other businesses in an open forum - where they would not normally have response. Without that sequence of events I would not have been posting here - as my feeling is that unless certain products and brands are promoted, or questions asked that might promote those brands - users will be flamed by the vendors of those brands.

     

    I apologize to those members who , not involved in that may have had their experience on this forum detracted from.

     

    I will be away for 4 days, and as before don't imagine that i will be visiting the forum again.

     

    I also will not be responding to any replies.


  5. The 51mp camera is around $50,000

     

     

    Suggests that the application would have to be of highly critical or high value nature ---- sports broadcasting or security critical applications involving crowds of people over a wide area in situations that might get volatile - requiring acute situational awareness and investigative capability


  6. Ikith, you could probably get a full system at that price if it's for residential and you do your homework!

     

    The first step is to put any technical issues out of your head - the major cause that prospects list as to why they did not buy a system was that they could not understand all the technical jargon , the 5 reps that called on them rambled on about.

     

    Make a list around your home state in simple terms , that you can easily understand - such as:

     

    I want to able to [Observe] for [Reason]

     

    Eg......I want to be able to observe the area behind the door to see who is at the door and within the door area before I open it.

     

    You will very quickly compile such a list. Once you have that list - pm , and i'll tell you if you can do it cheaply or if you need to look at higher specs.

     

    The key is always related to value.

     

    Measure the consequences of the failure - for example What if i could not see who was at the door and I opened it and 7 gunmen entered and killed my family (Extreme --- lol, commonplace in South Africa) then apply a monetary value to the consequences of the failure.

     

    Once you have placed a monetary value alongside each of the failure points, you might even be prepared to spend $50000 on your home surveillance system -LOL


  7. Actually it was the other way around.

    We evolved to capture cards as the software and hardware got better.

     

     

    Strangely enough the US and those areas, seemed to adopt embedded devices way earlier than here in South Africa ---- Standalone Devices only captured the majority share in South Africa around 2009 - I think at that time Standalone devices had a 70% penetration in most other markets.


  8. I certainly don't see any mainstream application for it, so don't imagine the general public would be the target market ---- but the demo application showing performance in stadiums and other panaoramic views might be appealing in some circumstances ----

    I could see sports broadcasters being all over this... some big-buck stadiums might implement one or two for in-house and replays and the like as well.

     

    I am thinking of the satellite police station on the beachfront of my city --- they have a number of PTZ cameras on their roof, but really ineffective!

     

    A few days ago, they found a body on the beach not far from the cops!

    i use thermal. but to be honest with you .... i dont want to list makes or installs with you as it will turn into ANOTHER 15 page thread that we have been doing wrong and and we cant do this or that. and also i dont want my ideas turned into your to be posted on another forum.

     

    LOL --- Tom, using thermal imagers to detect hot spots in interior walls and potential breech on hazardous materials tanks - is a world away from using thermal imaging for residential surveillance!


  10. Yes, much of this may seem old hat to many on the forum, however our research has indicated about a 2 year lag in our market vs the USA between mainstream adoption of technologies and solutions.

     

    We continuously try to gauge the state of market penetration in the USA and other markets in order to assess potential barriers to adoption in our own ---- there is no money or reliability to be gained by early adoption in the field of technology.


  11. One of our integrator partners specialize in the Gated Residential Security Complex field and has been investigating the use of thermal imaging cameras! While FLIR is the market leader - last time I checked, there are a few others that present options as well - such as Dali Technology in China.

     

    Anybody have any experience with Thermal Imaging - outside of the miltary and navy, and we also used them a lot in the emergency services? Any ideas of the practical and functional application in perimeter monitor at ranges of 300 or more meters? and does anybody have an idea of current market penetration for the technology?

    Can I tell you the reason behind that.

     

    The only value proposition that people see day in and day out from CCTV installers is price. The CCTV installers have taught the market that the only way to make a purchasing decision is to look at price.

     

    One CCTV Installer delivers a quote, the customer shows the next installer the quote and he strips 5% off the price, he shows the new quote to the next installer and he strips 2% off the price ...etc

     

    It is sad that our industry doesn't know what their actual value proposition is !

     

    Saving lives, securing assets, increasing profit, increasing customer service, putting business people in charge of their lives - all they can do is throw a lot of technical hype at potential customers who are more confused when they leave as when they arrived!

     

    Sell value, sell actual objectives that have measurable ROI's and solve your customers problems --- they will want to pay you, and what the next guy is charging will be irrelevant!


  13. Thank you both for your reply. If what brandon says is true. These systems as is. Are theft deferents at momost. I live in a rural area. So night vision is not critical. When I am on vacation my neighbors know. And would see night activity. But day time they have no direct line of sight. So may not see someone loading up a van for example.

     

    What Damara can I upgrade to. That foul say read a license plate @ 60'? One or two upgraded cameras would be enough. How much would I need to spend for an adequate system frm the start?

    Post a drawing of your facility ---- separate each area into quadrants, define in each quadrant the concerns you have and the solution you desire...then I will tell you what cameras to put there.


  14. Actually --- I purchases lenses from Fuzhou Feihua Optoelectronic Technology Co., Ltd., a manufacturer for the chinese military , in business since 1958 or something t! And I would agree ---- similarly on our IR Array cameras we specified IR lenses, and the result is less than standard IR cams.
