  1. of course you could always have a dud nano or 2...

Well I changed out the PICO I had there. The two nano's are 70 degrees or so from each other so I put a nano in place of the PICO since they were so close. I was able to improve the signal quality and performance but not where I find it acceptable.

I have the power setting set to 12db on the AP and about 9db on the CPE's. This seems to give me the best overall signal but not able to improve the pings or I should say I'm better than some of the timeouts and 1400ms I was getting initially.

  2. what happens when you run airview? anything noteworthy pop up? i had strange issues with some M5s here recently... they would intermittently interfere with other wireless networks in the area. ended up disabling discovery, forcing them to stay on a particular frequency and enabled channel shifting... sounds contradictory, but haven't been called back since... that was about 2 months ago

When I run airview I seem to have more noise and more issues. Strange right? These are within 200' and should not be having any issue at all. It's very weird. These two camera should be flying with all the bandwidth they have to play with. The jumping ping rate is not right and within 200' I should have a consistence <1ms I would think or at least right around there???

  3. A very brief history here. I have installed about 60 Ubiquiti M5 CPE's including some PICO Stations and I have not run into the problem I seem to be having with a couple M2's I just installed.

The NVR is an i3 system with 2GB Ram

Camera 1: Vivotek IP8352 Highspeed 60FPS Supreme Series cam

    Camera 2: Vivotek FD8361L

    Ubiquiti: (3) Nano M2's

    Signal strength is 85

    Noise is at -96db

Distance from CPE's to AP is no more than 200'

We have messed with this setup for pretty near a whole day and have it as tweaked as we are going to get it. We have severe lag in the cameras. Even a UPS truck into the driveway and you saw it one second and it was the next. Makes no sense the delay I am seeing coming through this wireless setup. Doing a PING I can see anywhere from 1ms up to 400ms and it jumps around whether the camera is conencted or not.

I removed the antennas from the local switch so the AP is connected directly to the server NIC. I have tried to elliminate all I could and I am getting subpar performance. Customer isn't too happy cause we put a 60fps camera and we are lucky to see a blip from a passing car. Don't ask why 60fps because it's moot! I would be happy to get 5fps at this point which is what I have the live view stream set to.

I am using the free vivotek software but this is moot because this delay is happening when directly logged into the web interface.

I think this issue has a ton to do with the very jumpy pings but I am at a complete and utter loss why I am getting this. I even hired a local wireless guru who has been installing wireless for nearly 12 years come to my customers today. He is the one who tweaked it so the signal is as good as we got now but we can't improve this ping performance and it is really causing a severe camera issue.

Anyone with pointers for me to try out? I would love to hear something I haven't tried yet. I went with M2 because there is a single layer of branches from spruce tree in between the CPE and AP. Wireless signal and noice is good. Ping.....well it is just horrible.

  4. Drywall would be better than wood at least you can mud it to patch up an oversized hole.

We use the butterfly bolts often unless it is a solid piece of wood and you can put a wood screw into. We have also used those self drilling wall anchors rates to a crazy 50 lbs. If the hole is large enough to stick your hand up in there you can slide a wood board up there and use screws to hold it there. The board will provide you a solid back surface to work with.

A million ways to skin a cat. LOL I never understood that saying

  5. The only Haters of Avigilon are the ones that can't sell it or buy it. " title="Applause" />

    Agree

    and lets keep this way

Recommending only video security solutions based on your current comfort level or technical capabilities is not delivering the best long-term business solution.

    It is selling products.

If you are in a "product sale" mindset, you better have some really low overhead and be able to live with "low price wins" profitability issues.

Pretty low AK! Your comment is not representative of me at all if it was directed towards me that is, because of an opinion I had. Ya I hate them cause I can't sell them LOL! Some comments in regards to my post are simple non sense.

Nothing more to say on this subject because my technical abilities prevent me from expressing my opinions any further LOL you crack me up.

  6. LOL!

Which camera does does Avigilon fully support? Let's all say it together Avigilon..........

Never said it didn't work with others. Gees you guys have one mindset when you team up LOL!

Never said I was a hater either. This is how wars start....

I have an opinion you have yours and pretty near all those now gunning for Avigilon were all gunning for exacq months back. I haven't had connection issues with exacq. I do have my bickering about them and I maybe would like Avigilon if I had customers that could afford to pony up the high price for their software and cameras in order to get all the features one would expect from a fully functional cross platform compatible NVR solution.

If 400 cameras include using all the functions such as simple motion detection then I'll try it but the last time I spoke to an Avigilon rep the only camera that they have full support for is there own and all others are pretty much view and record.

    Can you tell me otherwise?

Not here to argue just stating a point I was told by an Avigilon rep directly. See I did look into them....not a hater just looking for something that has more compatibility.

Chill out folks . Did I say anything incorrect in my post to rattle the cage other than why I like exacq better since OP was originally asking about exacq and Acti freeware?

  7. Bla Avigilon. Just another proprietary software package with limited 3rd party camera support. Sure nice features and nice interface if you have the customers that want to pay top dollar.

I'm sticking with my trustworthy exacq setups. It works with everything, no active x crap to deal with, my blackberry customers are happy as well as MAC, android, iPhone, Linux and the list keeps going.

My biggest urk with them is there complicated licensing arrangment. I have a few more urks but I live them just for the simplicity of support on multiple platforms. Three schools I did love the software because the dean of students is running a Mac and the director of finance runs a PC and both never have issues. They love it so much they purchased a few iPads for key personnel to monitor the cameras while they roam the hallways .

  8. @thewireguys: I'm using ACTi's bundled VMS.

@ssmith10pn: The date/time is synchronized with NTP time servers so that shouldn't be the problem.

@ando: I guess I should start looking for a better switch.

Any recommendations? I'm on a budget. How's this one:

I just installed a few of these zyxel switches at a school where we installed a number of TCM3511. I found them to be real easy to work with and very reliable so far, install only makes a little over a month now.

For the 7411's we are in a cold environment so we have to power them via a separate 12 source due to the heater, however, my office demo ACM7411has been powered by a zyxel switch for a while now with no issues. Using exacq for the NVR software.

  9. Yes the colors are flat. I have a customer that prefers the consistency in picture quality with Acti than with Arecont. I've installed maybe 40 Acti cameras and I chose 2 Arecont cameras for a couple areas needed the pixels. I fought with those Areconts to an image the customer was satisfied with. They want nothing to do with Arecont but love the bang for the buck with Acti. I've got them in 3 schools we did also. I have great support from them.

I installed 2 KCM5211 cameras today and the colors totally blow away the TCM and ACM cameras. I think they are an improvement with the new PIris.

  10. I have the purchased version of the exacq app put out by DComplex for 49.99. Don't know if I would pay for that since there is a free version now but I find that the paid one is a lot more stable. I prefer the interface and the way I can add new cameras to any window I want. The app other than that is a nice app to have available for the iphone and ipad for that matter because I have it on both.

  11. I actually have a single core Atom with Exacq running at my office with 4 megapixel cams. It runs just perfect but will slow down tremendously if using the server as a client as well. As wireguys says if it is built with a purpose to record then it works great but if you plan to sit there and use it as a client as well then you may want to look at something a little beefier.

I just got a dual core Atom this past week but haven't gotten Exacq on it. I have a customer who want to have a couple IP cameras at his house so when he goes to Florida in the winter. This will make for a perfect solution because it will work with his Blackberry and on his wife's MacBook and it didn't cost him a fortune. He is not computer savvy at all and since Exacq has none of that active x stuff it will make it easier for me as well

  12. Only comment. Stay away from Arecont. This is my opinion but the images are very soft and not sharp at all. They are plagued with quality issues. I just installed 4 of the 180 cameras and replaced one of the cameras twice due to defective cut filters; the cut filter was stayed stuck on sensor one on the first camera so they sent me another camera and the second camera had a stuck sensor on sensor two. The customer was over two hours away so you can only imagine the frustration. My other cameras are the 3135dn cameras. I have 2 of the four cameras where I can not get the color sensor side to focus the whole picture. The B&W side focus's great but the color side will only focus on the left side of the view or the right side but I can't focus the whole picture together. I've had the cameras come in where only B&W worked and color didn't. ARGH it's unreal.

Anyhow, you can purchase an AI Arecont camera but you have to ask for the AI feature because default they do not have the AI lens socket. To get the true day night just make sure you get a camera model with DN at the end and you will get the cut filter option. They are more limited on lens choices because they are 1/2" image sensors so be aware of that. Do not use there MP lenses and get a better MP lens from any other major lens mfg such as Fujinon, Tamron, Computar etc.

    Good Luck

  13. Does anybody know if the Exacq Web Server will run on a box running Windows Home Server? I've got Exacq VMS running on a stand-alone Linux box and was thinking of having my under-utilized WHS box run the web server. I installed the web server on the WHS but it doesn't seem to be working. Alternatively, will my dual-core Atom Linux box be able to handle both the VMS and web server load?

Not sure about running it separtly but I have a Win7 install on a single core Atom running exacq VMS, (2) 1MP cameras, (1) 1.3MP camera and (1) 2MP camera with any problems and I have the webserver running on. It's been this way for about 10 months now with issue at our office.

Not sure if it helps but your dual core must be better. I have mine with the client running as well....If you have performance issues just don't run the client on on your server. The live view really takes it's toll on the small Atom.

  14. Anyone successfully mate Exacq 4.5 with Arecont 8185DN fw 65166? Exacq says support with FW65165 but the (4) 8185DN's I just received all came with 65166.

Exacq just sits there trying to connect but never establishes a connection with the camera. I can access the cam web configurator from the same Exacq system so that part work but no go with an exacq connection.

  15. Avigilon is pay once Exacq and everyone else is pay every year.

Sort of......Exacq is kind of optional. If what you have works then then there is no need to pay annually, however, if you want to continue receiving updates then yes you need to pay annually.

I like Avigilon but for the few schools I've done they wanted the NVR to be accessible by all platforms being used in the school. Exacq fit that bill. It is not the best out there but it runs lite and has worked for us fairly flawlessy. I wish a few things would improve but they are always making new updates every 2 to 3 months.

  16. WOW! I've been to Arecont training and have installed a number of them and I am so unimpressed as well. They have huge issues with lighting similar to the pics here.

They typically come without AI so the iris is based upon internal digital interpretation. After I installed my last couple 5mp Areconts I was told I could order them with AI had I asked for it. I'm wondering if it would have made a big difference. I get similar picture quality where you just can't get the darn thing focused correctly. It's sad when you can take a 1.3mp cam and it blows away a 5mp one in picture quality.

  17. Just an FYI for the northern folks. The new ACTi KCM domes do not feature a built in heater. Be aware that they are speced to -4F and not -22F like the ACM and TCM 7411's.

I just realized this today and asked ACTi about it. Currently there is nothing seen in terms of a KCM with a heater. My understanding is these cameras generate more heat than the ACM and TCM ones do so I assume they operate nicely in -30 to -40F temps but there is no real life data on this yet.

Anyone have a freezer that goes this low who can test it?
