  1. I am a little confused by the animosity toward Larry, who as far as I can tell, bears the financial responsibilty for the site. Also, other than DataAve, how many have offered to work on the maintenance of the site, finding advertisers, etc.

It seems there are two separate issues.

    1) Who can view forum discussions.

    2) Who can view member information.

Why can't it be set up so that the forum is still public, but the member info (except for screen name) is private. I know this is possible because it is exactly what eBay does. You can browse eBay all day long, but to view info about members or to bid, you must join.

Seems to me you could have the best of both worlds.

My final comment is this. The majority is not always right. If you are a Bible believer, this point is easily proven. But, even if not, look at issues in America such as slavery and women's rights. For many years the majority held the wrong opinions. My point is that the argument should not be based on how many people think it is right, but the validity of the arguments.

  2. We have 3 brand new, in the box, never been used GeoVision 800-16 DVR Cards. However, they are the version 7 compatible (no dongle-required) version and are slightly longer than the cards which shipped with version 6.

Unfortunately, the cable connector on the back of these cards makes them too long to fit in the systems we have available.

We are hoping to find someone who has 3 new GeoVision 800-16 cards that are the shorter, version 6 compatible cards.

We would be interested in doing an even swap.

Anyone who might be interested and has the cards to swap, please PM me.

    Thanks.

  3. I would think the key would be whether the remote viewer is truly browser based or is a Windows program.

I am an avid Mac user and am not aware of any website/webpage that I cannot view on my Mac. The only possible exception I can think of is if a web page is dependent on some Active X control. To the best of my knowledge there is not a way to run Active X controls in a Mac OS (other than Virtual PC, of course).

  4. Recently our system with four cameras attached to a GeoVision 800-16 running version 6 software began crashing. We first did a Win2000 repair process, but it ran for less than a day. We thought the hard drive had cratered, but after disconnecting all cables and then reconnecting, the system once again booted up with no problems. I did chkdsk and found no problems. However, when I pulled up Windows Defrag, the drive was almost fully fragmented. The disk is 250GB and it was about 75% full. I don't remember the exact fragmentation percentage, but it had to be close to 75%, if not higher.

Has anyone else experienced this problem with GV DVRs and/or is it common to other DVRs as well? If so, how have you resolved or worked through this issue?

    Thanks.

  5. Hmmmm.....does lack of respons mean everyone is laughing their heads of because this was somehow a bad question?

I know it has been less than 24 hours, but this forum is usually so quick to respond it gets you spoiled to expect the unexpectable.

  6. Hey, rory. Thanks for the pics. I have a few questions since were are looking at a couple of low/no light applications

Who carries these cameras in the US?

    Are they way expensive?

Since it is a security booth, I am guessing there is at least some light here or is it completely dark?

The only IR camera we tried (yes, a cheap one) did great in minimal light, but in total darkness didn't do very well at all.

    Thanks,

    Dan

  7. Thanks for the advice...I will look into the cost of the higher resolution cameras and pass it up the food chain.

The problem is that even at only $20 more a piece (just a figure I threw out with no basis in research) that comes out to at least an additional $1200 for the whole project.

  8. We putting cameras in a manufacturing environment. We will be using KT&C 380 TVL cameras with 3.6-4mm wide angle lenses. Obviously, we are not concerned about a significant level of detail. We are mostly recording in case of some type of accident on a piece of machinery. We want to be able to have a general idea what happened based on objective evidencce.

What I am trying to calculate in some semi-scientific way is the area of coverage for each of these cameras (between 60-80 when we are all done). I want to put them in the best place to catch the most "action."

Is there some way based on the mounting height, etc. to determine the area of coverage for a camera. We are doing layout drawings of this and want to try to estimate on these drawings the coverage areas of the cameras.

  9. I told myself I wouldn't jump into the fray, but since I started this whole thing, here goes:

Windows is clearly dominant and probably will be for a long time. As much as I love my Macs and hate to admit it, Windows can be mostly secured if users will do just a few smart things. In all honesty, I have rarely had serious virus issues on a PC.

Linux is OK if you are a hard-core computer person, but is simply NOT ready for the mainstream. It is not easy to setup and runs into more difficulty with printers and such. This is, in my opinion, the achilles heel of open source. Nobody is responsible and thus it is easy for things to fall into the cracks.

Mac OS X is considered by many to be the most secure operating system, but it only runs on Apple hardware. As such, it has a limited ability for OS growth. In my experience most (not all) people who despise Macs have not tried one, especially recently.

When all is said and done, as much as I love my Macs I still work (and program) in a Windows world and that is not likely to change anytime soon.

    Just my 2 cents.

  10. Thanks, rory.

baywatch's link gave me the info I needed to know what I am looking for.

I did a search on shopping.yahoo.com for that specific one and then did a search for "usb dvr 4-channel" and found several different variations of the same thing, including some that come with wireless hubs/receivers and/or cameras.

    Thanks a ton!

This forum has extremely helpful for pretty much everything I have asked.

    Thanks to all!!!

  11. You can get a 4 camera card for udb 2.0 port with motion detection. The motion detection works pretty good and it can be networked.

The video settings are very basic, you can not adjust each camera individually but if the lighting is about the same its not a problem.

Its reasonably cheap here in U.K. (don't know about US).

This may be just what he was looking for! Thanks! I will research pricing/availability here in the US.

  12. You could use a 4 channel USB DVR, its a small box that attaches to your USB port and uses the Laptop as the DVR, you could simply velcro it to the top of the laptop.

Can you send me a link to an example of this or recommend a particular one?
