    hardware or software compresion

Hardware compression will allow you to record at higher resolutions and higher frame rates as the same time. It seems the trend is going towards hardware compression. What is your application?

best 4 channel standalone DVR under $500?

I can see why you would want a DVR w/o a hard drive to save money, but there are a few issues. Most DVR's use a specific hard drive, so if you do buy one w/o a HD, make sure you get a list of qualified HD's that will work with the unit. But most importantly, if you open the case and put your own hard drive in, it will often times void the warranty on the machine! Thats the biggest reason I get customers to buy a DVR with a hard drive!

questions regarding purchasing dvr from newbie

While I can understand frustrations when using budget standalone DVR's, the functionality of a name brand standalone is great. I've been running Panasonic units lately and I'm overly impressed.

    more than 30 camera installation.

We have done some 32 channel dvr jobs and from experience, I would recommend running dual 16 channel systems for better stability. But if you desire a 32 channel job, you can poke into Video Insight. However their software compression (standard res. recording) allows for 32 channel while their hardware compression (hi res. recording) allows for only 24 channels.

    best looking outdoor housings

Also be careful if your painting the housings a dark color, even a blower may not be enough to keep it cool. For instance, Pelco will paint your housing any color but they won't paint it black....

    best looking outdoor housings

Take a look at ganz and videolarm. Extreme would be good too but I think the housings come with cameras only, which isn't so bad as Extreme makes some good stuff. Ganz www.cbcamerica.com Videolarm www.videolarm.com Extreme www.extremecctv.com Be careful of the attractive plastic housings as they may not be adequate for th environment. The last thing you want is your camera burning up!

    $22 camera + $40 monitor-pics posted here

If your on a budget and your looking for wireless, your still going to spend $450.00 or so for all the equipment. You can get ahold of a 900mhz Tx/Rx set for around $300 and a decent front door camera with infrared for around $115, and roughly $20 for power supplies. The 900mhz isn't great for video but for a residential application you most likely won't even notice it. The other benefit is that the 900mhz penetrates walls pretty good so you should have zero issues going 10-30 feet. How are you getting power to your camera now? Let me know if this is in your budget and I'll point you in the right direction.

    $22 camera + $40 monitor-pics posted here

Looks good! The picture is pretty typical of a wireless camera, we call it "Furry". If you compare the wireless video with a hardwired video source, you will see why we call it "Furry"....LOL. Another big difference is the wireless cams have inexpensive CMOS sensors that only produce around 300 lines of resolution. With most budget cameras, you will probably experience some issues 8-12 months from now, but @ $60, who cares right! Did the camera state if its 1.2ghz or 2.4ghz? The link you posted online looked as if it was a 1.2ghz from a company called Lianyida, almost identical to some items I used to carry. They sold like hot cakes.

    Hi Resolution IP Cameras

Two Thumbs up for the Arecont cameras! I have recently been playing with the single sensor 1.3mp color camera and its great. But the dual sensor 3.2mp color, 1.3mp b/w is even better! Crazy awesome pictures but bandwidth is going to be your biggest issue. Make sure you have over 1mb upload and your clients have at least a 3mb download. The still pictures you can capture off the cameras are just as good! HDTV quality video & pictures!
