IP cameras and home network

Recommended Posts

Doing home automation and security systems I am getting involved in Video also now. My question is on a home network 10-100 how many network cameras can I put on till it starts to degrade internet speed or network speed on a 10-100 network or a gig bit network? Most cameras will be jpg or mpeg-4. I don't want to slow down anyones vpn connections or anything.

Its not just a question of how many cameras and what codec.

Resolution, bitrate, and FPS are just as relavent.

Most IP camera manufacturers have "project planners" that have bandwidth calculators you can use. Of course, you have to take their word for it.... but at least its a starting point

If it's only a couple of cameras, and their datastreams are not too huge, 10/100 is fine.

I'm running 10+ megapixel cameras, in addition to a large network storage array, and I have an IP PBX that's going online shortly. Needless to say, I had to do gigabit.
