GE TVR-1004-500 DVR vs. Sanyo DSR-2004H500

Recommended Posts

The GE is $339 (affordable) and the Sanyo is $711 (not so affordable). What disadvantages does the GE have compared to the Sanyo.

If I want to record at max. resolution continually how many hours or days will I get before the hard drive is full? And when it does fill up does it just start over from the beginning or does it just stop?

Getting any kind of info prior to purchase seems difficult. Remember the good old days when you could just go to a store? The websites that sell this stuff provide no info at all. They just take money and ship stuff out.

Why those two units?

Well, I believe that Sanyo unit is quite old. And actually proves a point Tomcctv made to me about IPS being half of FPS. This unit is a 60FPS unit vs. the newer GE TVR1004 being a 120FPS unit.

Specwise, the GE outperforms the Sanyo. That being said, I never liked the TVR1004. It's not very user friendly and somewhat more limited than the specs make out. The TVR3008/TVR3016 are much better units.

If you do go with the GE, at least use GE Nav as a PC client. Much more user friendly interface.

The Sanyo I haven't ever used. So I can't give you any real opinions there.

They're the only 2 4-ch units I've been able to get any info on at all. The Sanyo is discontinued so I ordered the GE. What is GE Nav? Something extra I have to buy?

Nope it's a free client software - actually a Central Management Software designed to handle multiple units. One you setup remote viewing, drop the info into GE Nav and use that to view/control/export/etc

It's free off their website.

At my previous company I was a GE/UTC product specialist, so whenever I had someone complain about using this unit, I'd direct them to this software and they (usually) were satisfied.

When playing back video recorded at night the picture doesn't look as good as what the camera shows directly. Looks like video artifacts. Like plants blowing around in the wind. How can I minimize this effect? I tried increasing the bit rate but that didn't seem to make any difference at all.

Will see that more with a variable bit rate, though its primarily the type of encoding, probably H.264? Its basically the noise as the camera compensates for low lighting, and how the DVR handles it. You can adjust the contrast on the DVR for the particular channel, if it has that setting, lower it some, although it will darken it a little, so adjust the brightness a little higher. If the DVR has a choice of VBR or CBR, make it CBR. Also try adding more light so there is less noise, and or adjust the camera settings, and if the camera has Digital Noise Reduction (DNR) play with that.

Does anyone know how I can playback video any faster than 4X on the GE DVR 10? I need to review 3 days of activity to determine who may have shot at one of my windows.
