NVR Causing Home Network Issues

Recommended Posts

I have an odd challenge and I'm really hoping someone else has seen this and found a solution they'd be willing to share. I have a QC804 NVR (which I believe is a Dahua product). When I connect the NVR to my home network (Verizon FIOS) router, after a few hours (sometimes more or less) all other devices on my network begin to lose network connectivity. Basically the Verizon router (Model #: MI424WR Rev F) slowly grinds to a halt. Even the Verizon DVR and set top boxes start to become unresponsive.

If I turn off the NVR or pull the network cable, everything goes back to normal.

What on earth could the NVR be doing that causes the Verizon router to become unresponsive? It's almost like the NVR is running some kind of DOS attack on the router.

The network configuration on the NVR seems to be ok. I'm able to connect to it externally and view the cameras, etc...

Has anybody run into this? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

dexterash,

Thank you for responding. It's currently directly plugged into the router. I did try through a second router briefly but feared the 2 router setup might be part of the problem so I removed it. I do have a Cisco switch I can try so I'll try connecting the NVR to the switch which is connected to the router.

Thanks.

I have a q-see 408 which is a DVR system, not and NVR. But initially, I had trouble with disconnections of other devices on my network. I tweaked these settings and maybe it's worth checking for you.

As it pertains to port forwarding, I re-set the ports to only TCP, as was recommended by q-see in the manual. My wireless laptop started giving me 'server not found' issues, but since tweaking that setting AND turning off Upnp on both the router and the q-see dvr, WAN and LAN on my network has been fine. And be particularly aware of upnp on the router and the device. It's supposed to make communication between the two easy, but it can sometimes make things a mess. Consider turning it off on both sides. Good luck.

Make sure the dns server is set up properly on the nvr. The instructions should be in your manual. I had the exact same problem and was able to cure it by changing the dns server settings on the nvr.

dexterash,

Plugging it into the switch didn't help but thank you for the suggestion.

shockwave199,

I may have my terms wrong. I don't know if it's an NVR or DVR to be honest. I'll take a look at the port forwarding as indicated by the manual. I know I'm using the default ports and UPNP as I've reset all devices a few times and notice the port forwrading automatically get's set up on the router (and external access to the DVR/NVR) works. Thank you for the advice.

I'll take a look at this as well. I can't remember if I put modified the DNS server entries after the last reset. It may be back to the 4.4.4.4, etc... default settings. Thank you for the advice.

Thank you all.

If all else fails, disable this option. And if ports have been forwarded, than for sure turn it off in the router/NVR [or dvr]. Hopefully no other wireless devices on your network depend on UPNP. I'm not saying that it's definitely the problem, but UPNP can cause odd issues sometimes. Good luck.

I wanted to say thanks again for everybody's help. I ultimately called Q-See and they told me to enable DHCP (instead of the static address I had) and disable UPNP. I did both (not sure how DHCP helps since it still has the same IP, SM & GW). Anyway, so far (2 days), the ports have remained on the router, external access still works and it hasn't kicked everything else off the home network (yet). It has gone as long as a week without causing this behavior in the past so it's a bit early to call it a win but I'm hopeful.

Thanks again.

If you have the problem again, I would try enabling static IP and leaving upnp off. I can't say for sure but it's likely upnp is the culprit, as opposed the static setting. But best of luck and I hope your troubles are behind you!

One last post on this (I hope). So far the issue has not returned. I still don't see how enabling DHCP and disabling UPNP fixed it (since the IP address, SM, GW remained the same on the DVR/NVR and the port reservations remained as they were in the router) but so far this seems to have done the trick. Hopefully this thread helps somebody else because that fix isn't very intuitive (to me anyway).

Again, I sure appreciate the help.

Glad it's stable now. If I had to guess it was upnp.

Now I have to ask you something. It was mentioned recently that an NVR that includes POE is trickier with port forwarding. Your problem with this kind of suggests it is. When you follow the manual, is there anything you do different or have to change when configuring things that's different than typical dvr port forwarding? Perhaps modify the subnet somehow? I'm just curious if there's any additional steps to port forward that he manual says, for an nvr with poe built in.

Also, did you end up plugging it into the switch or the router?

Thanks, and glad it was solved for you!
