Select the best NVR for my network cameras

Recommended Posts

The key things when looking at NVR specs are:-

- Will it support my cameras?

- How much hard drive space does it have?

- What is the total bandwidth the NVR can support?

DS-9XXX Hikvision NVR support a wide range of cameras and Axis is on the supported list. In terms of hard drive space the DS-96XX have plenty of space, & most units have room from 6+ hard drives, so no problem there. Some even have RAID options also.

The sticking point with all NVRs is amount of bandwidth that the NVR can handle. This is total amount of camera video that streamed to & from the NVR. It takes into account cameras streaming directly to the NVR as well as a user(s) viewing the camera locally or remotely over the network. The specs for the DS-9664NI-ST(RT) shows an inbound bandwidth of 160Mbps.

I currently have a DS-9632NI-ST & uses about 55Mbps of the bandwidth with 9 IP cameras. However, note that I have several 3Meg cameras as well as a couple 1.3Meg cameras in my scenario

If all your Axis cameras are no more than 1.0MP each, then you may be able to pull it off using the DS-9664NI-ST. The greater the megapixels, the more the bandwidth required on the NVR. To help convey this point use this document as a reference point.

I have not seen a similar document for the DS-9664 series NVR. You may need to get with Hikvision support on that.

If Hikvision does not meet you needs, then you can look at the Dahua 6XXX Super NVR series. Alternatively, a custom built NVR unit from DVR Systems may also be a good fit, especially if you are also planning for further growth & additional camera placement.

40 network cameras is not as easy as putting them on one NVR. Even Milestones NVRs are limited I believe 16 cameras and 400fps at 1MP which is not even 30fps for all 16 cameras. I'm afraid if you get one of these Dahua or Hikvision NVRs, not sure you'll be able to support 40 cameras at their native resolution or frame rate. Even displaying 40 cameras on one screen may be possible but not practical. So depending on the resolution and desired frame rate, for something this large, I would look at the Milestone NVR, maybe get 3 of them.

If it was me, I would get a good server like an HP Proliant DL380, dual socket, 16 or 20 cores, 4GB RAM, 4 GigE NICs, 16 drive chassis and run Milestone XProtect Pro, Exacq or Avigilon NVR software.

@all:Thanks a ton for your concern and helps.

@kifaru: this is my first experience to design such a great project and your guidelines are so useful, thank you so much.

@buellwinkle: whats the benefit of server against NVRs?how do I convince my boss to use server instead of NVR?

But as you have more experience, with the following info that I mention here give me the best solution:

along this project I want to install:

Axis Q6035-C: 11 set

http://www.axis.com/products/cam_q6035c/

axis P1345E: 1 set

http://www.axis.com/products/cam_p1354e/

axis P1346E:4 set

http://www.axis.com/products/cam_p1346e/

Axis Q1921-E:2set

http://www.axis.com/products/cam_q1921e/

Axis Q-1755-E: 1set

http://www.axis.com/products/cam_q1755e/

19 cameras as the below schematic map:

230598_1.jpg

I will install 12 of these cameras around one side of the yard, connect them to a switch via fiber optic and the rest one in other side of the yard and connect them to another switch via FB,then all cameras connect to a main switch by Fiber optic and finally to the server.

I want to show these 19cameras on 2,55inch LEDs at control center.

my questions:

1- what's the best solution for this network?

2-what type of switches do I use?

3-NVR or server?what type?

4-what's the best software for this network?is it better to use Axis software or other thing?

5-for a back up sys what kind of equipments I have to buy?

6-any idea/advice/rec?

I'm so thankful in advance for taking the time and read my questions.

Smile

Aboo

P.S: I will install 19cameras at first step but we will extend this project to 40-45cameras in near future and I don't want to pay again for additional NVR,server,HDD and Etc.(cause this, I mentioned in the first post that I want to install 40cameras)

1- what's the best solution for this network?

Put failsafe loops in the network

2-what type of switches do I use?

Gig-E Enterasys POE, Cisco POE, Juniper Networks. Please don't use garbage...use enterprise class equipment! Netgear is NOT net gear if you get what Im saying.

5-for a back up sys what kind of equipments I have to buy?

Depends on your methodology, you could go tape or disk. Youll wanted a supported back up solution. A lot of people don't back up nvr data. We just do a raid 10 on our NVR Servers at work

6-any idea/advice/rec?

Research! and then when your ready to make a decision. Research some more.
