Security Password Question

Recommended Posts

I bought a Swann 8 camera system several months ago and found that the password(s) can be no more than 8 characters in length and can be ZERO-9 only. I would like to have stronger password protection than that.

Are there any systems on the market that will accept password lengths of more than 8 characters and will also allow alphabetical and/or special characters?

Thanks,

Lookin

If the firmware is poorly secured, you can have 1000 character passwords and be as secure as using "password" as your password..

I find it ammusing that you are so worried about security but not about quality.

I find it amusing that you assume that I'm 'so worried' in the first place. Concerned yes... worried no.

I find it amusing that you also assume that I'm not 'concerned' about quality, seemingly, just because my 'intro' security system purchase was a Swann system a few months ago. I'd read on several websites that Hikvision is supposedly one of the best available and that Swann systems are just Hikvision re-branded. Maybe so, maybe no... on more than one point. I do want a better system and I will upgrade to much better quality.

I find it amusing that you didn't offer any 'Yes brand-X does, brand-Y does, brand-Z also does' type of a reply... or offer something like 'sorry, but there is no company that I know of that offers that capability in there product line'. So it appears that you do not know.

Your 'signature' states: "Licenced Security Installer & Trainer". If I were a potential customer, an actual customer, or a current client of yours and you responded to one of my questions with a reply like that... totally devoid of any useful and pertinent information but rather laced with some semblance of sarcasm... I would not... BE.

But thanks for your reply just the same.

Thanks for the reply, but similar to the previous responder you didn't offer any type of a 'yes or no' answer in your post... so it appears that you don't know either.

Regarding firmware security... I agree with your point about the fact that some firmware being poorly secured presents a security vulnerability, yet you've offered nothing regarding systems with very secure firmware such as NAME-BRANDS.

No need for your attitude - that wont get you any help at all. Swann is not all rebranded hikvision....that was your first mistake. I guess its buy now ask questions later...I guess you've stumped us with your very difficult question....it will go unanswered from me..hate these posters with attitudes...as if they are owed something....

Thanks for your reply, boogieman, but it's ad-hominem and nothing more. I don't have as much of an attitude as you seem to think. I apologize to ALL who might think that I do, including you. I'd asked questions (on the internet) first and then bought... not the other way around.

I'd asked a legitimate question here hoping for an informative and helpful response from people that I thought were knowledgeable in that particular area. Perhaps I was wrong.

Can any yet help me with factual information? I would certainly appreciate it on the part of any members here.

Thanks, Lookin

P.S. Everybody has an 'attitude' of some type or another whether they realize it or not. Not all attitudes are perceived as genuinely and as accurately as they should be, even when you're standing face to face in the physical presence of the person you think has an 'attitude'. That perception or MIS-perception is even worse on the net.

P.S.S. I didn't come here with the 'attitude' that anybody here 'owes' me anything.

Yes.

PS. Thats all you are going to get with your passive aggressive answers. Do you even read what you wrote?

"I'd asked a legitimate question here hoping for an informative and helpful response from people that I thought were knowledgeable in that particular area. Perhaps I was wrong."

PPS You wont get any help if you keep acting like a jerk.

I bought a Swann 8 camera system system

Now there's your problem.

See post #2

A few points to note.

8 characters each being one of ten digits gives how many combinations? (you can work it out)

For most entry level situations (ie Swann) that would be sufficient. If you have a high security situation then you shouldn't have a Swann product and regardless it shouldn't be available for any Joe Blow to be fiddling with to try to crack the password.
