Upgrading my system

Recommended Posts

First things first. I've learned a lot digging thru the forum. Just enough in fact, that I really know how little I know.

I have been running an XRS2008-16 for that last few years. Unfortunately, the unit has a few problems. It doesn't allow me to view my system on my phone and after upgrading to Windows 10 accessing the system on my laptop has become unworkable. This i could live with. What I can not accept is the system randomly deciding to stop recording. More than once, I pulled up my system when needed to find, nothing was recording. Sooo...... after looking around the board here, i ordered a HIKVision DS-7208HQHI-SH. It should be here tomorrow. I am researching a good choice for an LPR Camera. I believe I have a clear angle from my roof to the center of the street in front of my neighbors house (just in front of his driveway). I estimate that this distance from the house to the street is about 40' and from about 55' down. This puts the target location about 67-75' from the camera. The camera will be about 12' high and i calculate the angle on the plate will be about 36 deg. With that said, I am considering the bosch vlr-4075-v511. What I don't know is what other cameras I should be looking at for a comparison. Maybe with my 1080p DVR there is a better option. I want this camera to be dedicated to the capturing of license plates.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

Why would you go for an analog camera (960x576 maximum recording resolution) when you have a DVR that supports up to 2Mp (1920x1080)?

I would keep looking for at least a 1080p camera.

Sadly, I do not know what I do not know. Researching a decent LPR has not been easy. It's surprising how limited the information is. This was one of the few camera i could find that addresses the challenges for reading plates in very low lighting on vehicles moving up to 50 MPH (which is faster than would ever come down the street). Are there more suitable cameras you would suggest I consider?

Thank Securame for redirecting my focus. I am still having a tough time finding options, but I think i am at least swimming in the right pool now. I came accross this camera and wonder if anyone has had any experience with it. It appears to meet all my specs, but I am concerned that I cannot find much online literature on it.

Cantek Plus CTP-TV29TL 2.4Mp HD-TVI Outdoor IR License Plate Camera (i'd post a link, but i believe its against the rules)

Based on the specs, it can see up to 300' with IR (I only need 70'), can connect with a standard BNC cable, operates at 2.4mp/1080p and is priced under 200. Almost seems too good to be true.

Any feedback would be welcomed. As I said, I am not well versed in this area, but want to avoid buying mistakes like I made with my last two systems.

I got the system yesterday and swapped it out no problem. My Wirless streaming bridge died on me, so I ran Cat5 from the garage to the office to provide a hard wired connection. The network appears to be working as I can access the unit on my computer using the Hikvision site. The App in my Iphone cannot connect. I downloaded the Hikvision app and used the same DDNS that I used to access the unit on the Hikvision site. Is there a step I might be missing?

By the way, after reading Securame's comment, I decided to upgrade my cameras to 1080p to take full advantage of the new DRV.... That's another 450 in the system. Unfortunately, I still have not decided what camera is best for capturing plates on the street. I guess I'll wait to see how the new cameras perform and go from there.

Again the question buried in here is.... Is there a site or source I can go to get tips on setting up the mobile app? Any suggestions welcomed.

In case anyone else has this challenge. My error was in forwarding one port but not the second. Problem solved. I really appreciate the outpouring of support. Thanks.

Windows 10 ,specifically Microsoft edge which is the new version of Internet explorer does not play well sometimes with dvr's. I had a lot of problems connecting to several customers dvr's with my new laptop . I'm not super tech saavy when it comes to Internet stuff .I do know that you can still use Internet Explorer instead of Microsoft edge by opening up edge ,then click on the drop down menu on the top right and click on "open with Internet explorer" and that solved my problem .someone recently posted that you can also change your browser from edge time IE by pressing f12 on your keyboard. I have not tried this yet .
