Designing a Day-care live video streaming camera system

Recommended Posts

We are not going to reinvent the wheel here, we know there are many systems out there and would like to source for the most affordable systems for countries with poor internet connections. Yes, video quality would be compromised but let’s hear what options are available.

We are looking to offer Day-care live video streaming camera system services in South America similar to www.daycarewebwatch.com. We are looking for a simple plug and play platform. Just to give more details, I have attached our project plan which is to install IP cameras in Day-Care centres and homes for parents to monitor their kids from their PCs or mobile devices at work or wherever they are.

Notes and constraints

1. IP cameras will be installed at Day-Care centres and the footage uploaded to a cloud based Video Hosting platform.

2. Cameras do not need to be hidden, lighting is Ok.

3. Minimum video recording. 1 or 2 days recording would be ok

4. Parents will first create a profile on our website which will include the IP addresses of the Day-Care centre or their home cameras that they are allowed to access.

5. Poor internet connection, mostly 3G wireless connection

6. Erratic power supply, so we will need a power box /UPS during times of power outages at site.

Questions

1. What is the best on demand cloud based Video Hosting platform for our project? And what are the fees packages

2. What are the ideal cameras for our project? video compression ratios, minimum upload speed requirements e.t.c

With 3G, you'll not be able to support multiple video stream to numerous parents smoothly.

A feasible solution is to use the IP Camera to ftp the a snapshot image to your website at interval.

Simple script to authenticate the parents, they'll be able to view the still image which will be update at interval. Interval can be set to every min , etc.

You are in control of the whole system in this way and there's no monthly fee to pay (except for your website hosting which you already had, and your 3G internet subscription).

Otherwise, you may face what dmills913 faced if you rely on a 3rd party server and they decide to discontinued the services at any point in time in the future.
