Vehicle Damage Recognition Systems

Recommended Posts

I have been asked by a customer to provide him with a vehicle damage recognition system for his car park. This will try to reduce the calims he is having where people claim for damage to their car whilst it has been parked with them. Some kind of software must be available where a car drives in, stops, a number of cameras look at all sides of the car and number plate and store those images, when the customer leaves, the process is carried out again and the two sets of images are compared.

Any help ????????

Hey Swift,

This sounds like a very interesting system. I don't know of anything that does this but I bet you could piece something together that does something close.

It doesn't sound like you need video. Pictures are all you need am I correct?. The part that sounds complicated is the automated comparision.

Would he be happy with just capturing and storing the images and then doing a human eye comparision if an incident happens.

Take a look at this site. They have cameras and software just for this type of application. Its called machine vision, other manufacturers make these type of cameras also, like Toshiba, but this one has 1-4 Megapixel cameras, framegrabbers, and software development kits (so you can write or have someone write the exact software you want, like in your case).

Swift,

We are a small engineering consulting and we specialize in Video and Video related technologies.

We have the means to do image comparison and resolve a lot of your concerns. For instance, we can capture the License plate and determine which cars are leaving the site.

Your request could easily be solved by 3 cameras and one(2) PCs. One picture each for the front and driver side, one for the back and passenger side and one for the top. From the images we get the License plate image and store it with time-stamp. As the car is ready to leave, you take similar pictures and the sofware will match automatically from the pool of images of cars that are still inside the lot. Once matched you could compare images and determine differences automatically.

Personally you will only have a problem if

1- the owner claims damage while in the parking lot, (you solve this with the entry images)

2- The owner claims damage after the car left (you solve this with the two sets of images).

3 (Nasty) - Determine wether the owner has done the damage himself or if you want to find out how, who, where and when the damge was done. For this you need a wide range camera per row or parking section, this camera could be activated upon movement. Now this one is purely for human visual inspection after the fact.

Let us know if this solution will work for you, or if you wish to pursue this further. We would be open to a free initial consultation if you like.

Some demo of our capabilities could also be arranged.

Best Regards

John
