motion detection masking problem

First time posting on site but have learned a lot from the knowleadagble professionals who post! Thank You!

I have a new Geovision Card GV-1240 that works great; however I can not get the masking feature for motion to work on each camera. When I click the button for masking for example, then draw over a tree it shows the box as I am dragging the mouse as if its going to make the box; but when I realease the mouse the box goes away. I have tried this several different ways clearing it and starting over again; I cannot get this feature to work as the manual states

Does anyone have a suggestion on what I'm doing wrong. the software version is 8.1v

Hit the + sign button then drag your box. You are probably on the remove mask setting as such if there is no selection it appears to do nothing.
