Awesome DVR- use it as my high-end recorder. Pros: It's great with low-bandwidth applications, has a TON of remote features, has GREAT remote software and a heavily loaded web interface, priced right, 3-year warranty Cons: Not hybrid, but they say it will have IP camera compatiblity soon Have you demo'ed it yet? If you look on Nuvico's homepage, there's a link to an online demo machine. They also have the remote software, VMS, available for download in the support section of their site.

Egbert - As I indicated in your other post about this install, the Nuvico cameras with the SIE chipset that have digital slow shutter work great in a bar setting. Furthermore, cameras with an 'SD' in the middle of them have day/night cut filters, so yeah, the picture quality will be outstanding. Check out my attached image which shows what these cameras look like in extreme low light... this is a very dark alley, I know, my company installed it.

As for the camera itself, yep, awesome camera considering the price. Honestly though, their domes with digital slow shutter, standard with their SIE chipset, kick major ass... way better than the bullet, but hey, NUVICO... 3 year warranty, baby!

That's a pretty bad idea. As soon as those rubber o-rings develop ozone cracking, kiss it goodbye.

Hey Egbert - Actually, the Nuvico cameras you're specifying actually do better in low light conditions than ANY camera I've ever seen, pricey name-brand, or cheap off-brand. The thing is, first off, GREAT warranty, as good as the "big boys". As for the image, dude, 550 TVL, so yeah, awesome picture. Thing is with these Nuvicos, they all have the SIE chipset, which has digital slow shutter, so although you're referencing their SD cameras, which have day/night cut filters, they also have DSS, so one way or the other the picture will be GREAT in low light- take it from me, I've installed HUNDREDS of them - Their DVRs are pretty great too, if you're not familiar. I think what really sets them apart, aside from the product and picture quality, is the fact that they've safeguarded distribution by placing an "unauthorized distributor list" on their website. What that means is that you and I don't necessarily have to worry about our end-users going on various websites pricing-out the stuff because their authorized resellers have to abide by a certain set price that they can make public. They have quite a few resellers, so to get the best price the best thing you can do is contact their website for a local distributor. My .02 -

Yeah, I'd speculate based on the specifics of the failure. Nuvico DVRs, historically, are rock solid.

The codec talk was fun. That said, Nuvico is MPEG-2, streaming via network via a seperate chipset at a proprietary H.263, which I might add is EXACTLY what every H.264 out there today is, a PROPRIETARY H.263. H.264, as we've been tuned to understand it through cute marketing in all our favorite publications, does not actually exist. It's no different than all the hype associated with megapixel and IP cameras. The manufacturer spending the money to advertise in the publication is also writing the articles about their super awesome-o compression, and/or pushing the subject of IP/megapixel video costing the same as analog. I digress... Truth be told, bus architecture today cannot support the workload TRUE H.264 requires. Any schmuck can apply an H-series codec to a DSP and call it something, H.264 for example. Aver, TI, Infineon, Freescale, Philips, whoever... if you're writing an H-series codec to their DSP, it's a proprietary H.263. With regard to hardware compression, and as someone who is a patent holder of three hardware-based compression algorithms, I'd further argue its court admissibility. As an expert witness for digital video evidence in one of the largest cities in the US, so often have I come across instances where video captured by the "H.264" DVR of the month contains I, B, and P frame issues, a commonality in H.263 algorithms. Intra-prediction, the process by which hardware-compressed video is applied, has been known to cause inaccuracies and macroblock motion estimation errors.

So it turns out after talking with Nuvico's Director of Sales that Nuvico has had a function like Speco's Intensifier for years now. Anything with their SIE chipset, or part of their Easyview camera line, like their domes, has the digital slow shutter function like what you're find on the Speco Intensifier line. Good marketing on the part of Speco, but nothing new by any draw. In either case, I despise Speco, almost as much as I detest ADI where I buy it from. Nuvico has some of THE best pricing out there, plus they cover all of their products with a three year warranty. Just thought someone else out there might benefit by knowing this!

Sounds plain and simply like a bad HDD.
