The RS-485 standard is a three wire connection. It's a differential pair but each signal pin is referenced to ground. Now whether the manufacturer understood this or not is another matter. Failure to reference these pins to ground can potentially cause big problems for when the signal goes out of the valid +/- range the transceiver chip can overheat and kick in the protection circuitry to shut it down (best case) or burnout the part completely (worst case). Yes, it will generally work fine on short runs but for longer runs with different ground potentials at the drops trouble can bite you.

And *that* is the root of the problem

It's fine that moderators can decide what is sticky but moderators cannot identify which threads that individual users might like to keep sticky. So the suggestion doesn't defeat the purpose of sticky's, it enhances it by allowing individual customization. It does not preclude moderators from making stickys. The 'mark all as read' feature as implemented does not work the way I suggested. Yes, it marks all as read, then goes to some other page and you have to manually return to the main page. I'd rather "mark all as read and return to main forum index". With a decent usenet reader that stuff can easily be done with one click and not a click-wait-click-wait sequence. In fact I'd like to see a mark-as-read capability from the main forum index. There are some subgroups that I just don't care about. This type of stuff is generally lacking on all web based forums and I'm not picking on CCTV in particular.

If you're still looking for suggestions here are some from the perspective of a long time usenet user. There are some things that a good usenet news reader can do that a web forum can't and it would be nice to see some crossover of certain features into a web based forum. Here's my list. 1. Killfiles so that posts from certain individuals (spammers) are automatically deleted from a members view. 2. The ability to mark a thread ignored so new posts to the thread do not show up as unread posts. 3. The ability to only subscribe to those forums that are interesting to a member (i.e. customize a members home page so that only those forums of interest are displayed). 4. The ability to make forum threads sticky on a per-user basis. What is useful to one member may not be useful to another. 5. A one-click 'mark this forum read' button from a forums page that will mark all threads read and return to the main forum index.

Somebody posted here recently who bought a Lorex system from Costco and was having lots of problems with condensation in the outdoor cameras. FWIW.

Yes this has been going on for some time and it is SPAM and I wish the moderators would block this jackass already. I've tried reasoning with this spammer in hopes of getting him to be a contributing member of the group but that hasn't worked. And I surely won't be buying any cameras from him. I'm a new member as well and primarily lurk. I dislike spammers. I won't be buying anything from him either. I think he's the same guy who spammed me via PM but I can't verify that since I deleted it immediately (but his avatar looks very familiar).

The 221 pdf I downloaded only lists one. What is the procedure for the full reset? Thanks. There is two ways to perform a factory settings default. One is the way you described with the cycle power and hold down the reset button. The other is to log into the came from a web browser and inside the Maintenance area, inside this area is an option for factory default including IP or not including IP. IF you are not the origonal owner/admin of this camera my guess is the person who had it before you performed a factory default without reseting IP and the camera would not override that until a new root password was setup. OK, thanks. The original owner would be me. I was sort of dinking around with it when I first bought it figuring that a factory reset could put it in a known state when the time came to install it. Whoops.

Never mind, I got it working. By going into 'live view' mode it prompts for the entry of a new master password and that got it working. I don't understand why it didn't reset to the default IP address though.

I've got an Axis 221 that doesn't seem to factory reset and the password is lost. A factory reset doesn't restore it or the default IP address. Axis Camera Management utility continues to show a "Credentials Mismatch" error with an IP address that seems to be assigned by the DHCP server (not the factory default of 192.168.0.90). The factory reset procedure is being done per the docs (disconnect power, hold the reset button in, reconnect power, wait until status indicator turns amber, release button, wait until status turns green). Anyone see this before and have a solution?

Not an expert but I'm betting your outdoor cam does need waterproofing. Condensation will likely take its toll even if it stays completely dry in the rain.

Welcome. I grew up and went to school there, in Tempe, and moved out as soon as possible. Can't say I miss it. We still have family there but do our best to only visit in the winter.

I'm new to this myself but it seems if you want a mobile and expandable system then IP wireless would be the way to go. That way you don't have to mess with running wires to wherever the camera is needed on a given day. It would be easy to expand with additional wireless cameras as the system grows. If there is a large coverage area it would be easy to either put the recording system (pc, dvr, etc) and wireless access point on a mobile cart and wheel it around, or add additional wireless access points or repeaters to extend the system. Plus you could use much higher resolution cameras than analog, which may well make the difference between identifying a face or not. Analog would not give you a choice of higher resolution.
