  1. They have a new deal going on that they add Norton 2009 15month to the bundle and it actually dropped the price. So I ordered that. Also upgraded to 4GB. So it's: Vostro 220 mini: $554 ($964-$410savings) PROCESSOR Intel® Core™ 2 Duo E7500 w/ VT (2.93GHz, 3M, L2Cache, 1066FSB) OPERATING SYSTEM Genuine Windows® 7 Professional Bonus-Windows XP Professional downgrade MONITOR Dell E Series 18.5 inch E1910H Flat Panel Monitor MEMORY 4GB DDR2 SDRAM 800MHZ OPTICAL DRIVE Single Drive: 16X (DVD+/-RW) Burner Drive HARD DRIVE 500GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) w/DataBurst Cache™ VIDEO CARD Integrated Video, Intel® GMA X4500HD Norton 2009 15month Above I had priced 500GB for comparison with other units. I wanted 1TB, but it didn't make sense to swap out the included 250GB -> 1TB for $145 extra. So I decided to go with the standard 250GB and I'll buy my own 1TB for <$100 which I'll have in addition to the 250GB. As such, my price was really $499 ($909-$410savings). Not bad at all in my mind for a new Dell machine with: - Intel® Core™ 2 Duo E7500 - Win7 & XP - 4GB - 250GB - 18.5" Monitor

Need camera suggestion for my front door

Thanks Mike - yes, I can see that page without any issue. I see that image is in CIF resolution (240 horizontal pixel rows). Do you have an image from this camera at a higher resolution? It's capable of almost 4x that size, right? I'd be interested to see what that looks like. How did you get that image? Is it from a DVR recording, and thus does that play a role in the quality of the image shown? I want to ensure I'm comparing just camera quality and also at the highest resolution it's capable of.

  4. I am going to buy a Geovision GV-1240A-8 card (8 cameras, 30fps/ea) and a PC to go along with it. Now I need to figure out what kind of cameras I need. For now, I'm just asking about a camera for my front door in an effort to narrow my questions. However, for completeness, I figured I'd list my other camera positions in case anyone cares to comment as a whole. My plan is as follows: Camera #1: 9ft off ground, under front porch (4'x20'). It will be in the upper corner furthest from the walkway/door. Someone standing in front of my door will be about 17' away from the camera. There's about a 8'x8' section I'd like to cover at that distance, so it seems like ~8mm 1/3"CCD lens will do. Note: since I'm not positive about the lens, I may buy a single camera with varifocal and try it in each location to see what others I'll need to buy. Cameras #2-#5: These 4 cameras will be under the eve on the 2nd story (~20' off ground) at the corners of the house and aim at the yard next to the house on all 4 sides. Cameras #6-#8: These 3 cameras will be inside and covering the entrances to the house (front door, rear door, and garage). There is some lighting around the house - though I assume I'll want IR cameras in all locations: Front: 1 bulb on each side of the garage door (total=2), 2 bulbs under the porch. Rear: 1 bulb at rear slider Side1: 1 bulb on side Side2: 0 bulbs, but neighbor house has bulb on that side (~25' away) as well as street light (~50' away) I was thinking I would spend more on the front door camera than the others. I'd like to stay under $200 for the front and around $100 for the others. How's that sound? So, are there any suggestions for a camera for my front door? To get things rolling, I'll mention the following camera which I found on ApexCCTV's website. Any suggestion why this is inadequate or why I could get something comparable for less $ would be appreciated. Specs of this one: Varifocal Weatherproof IR Security Camera Part #: AP-IT90 Price: $169.00 * Type: Color * Weatherproof: Yes * Sensor Chip: Sony 1/3" CCD * Analog Resolution: 540 TV Lines * Lens: 4-9mm Varifocal Auto-Iris Lens * Light Sensitivity: 0 (IR Mode) Lux * Video Format: NTSC * Illumination Range: 165' * IR LED Count: 36 Infrared LEDs * Cable Management: Yes * Voltage: 12v DC * Mounting Bracket: Included * Power Supply: Sold Separately * One Year Warranty Image Sensor 1/3"SONY Horizontal Resolution 540 TV Line Pixels NTSC :811 (H)508 (V) TV System NTSC IR LED ¢ 8x36 PCS IR Series Distance 50 M Lens 4-9mm Manual Zoom Lens Sync System Internal IR Status Under 10 Lux By CDS Usable Illumination 0 Lux/F2.0 (LED ON) IR Power On CDS Auto Control S/N Ratio ≥48dB (AGC OFF) Gamma Correction 0.45 Video Out Composite Signal (1.0Vp-p, 75Ω) Scanning System NTSC:525 Lines, 60 Field/Sec Electronic Shutter Time Auto: -NTSC 1/60-1/100,000Sec Operation Temperature -10˚C ~ +50˚C RH95% Max Storage Temperature -20˚C ~ +60˚C RH95% Max White Balance Auto Power Source DC12V 300mA Dimension 150(W) x 100(H) x 95(D)mm Weight 1600g
  5. I'm relatively new to this, so I can't comment. However, could you specify how high off the ground this camera is and what kind of lens? ie: 8ft off ground, 1/3"CCD, 3.6mm ??? Thanks!
  6. The video card options through Dell for the Vostro system are: - Integrated Video, Intel® GMA X4500HD - 512MB ATI Radeon™ HD 4350 ($85) Is it really worth getting a non-integrated card? What's the benefit? Will that ATI card work? (The warnings about some video cards not working with GeoVision has me a bit nervous) Also, I'll likely have this system locked up in a closet or similar. I'll be able to sit in front of it if I want, but it won't be at my desk. As such, I guess I'll be more likely looking at the recordings via a remote view method on my office computer. Due to that, does it make sense to have a better graphics card if I'm not going to be looking at that monitor much? Thanks!
  7. I've been looking into systems over the past few months and I think I decided to create a PC-based DVR using a Geovision GV-1240A-8 card. I chose this based on my desire for 8 cameras and having 30fps recording for each of them. I've had good luck with Dell systems over the years, so I'd just assume buy another Dell for this purpose. Based on what I've read, I searched Dell's site for machines that contain: - Intel Duo-2 processor - XP - non-VIA and non-nVidia graphics. The below have Intel graphics chipsets. Below are the three that I found. Is there any reason why one of these machines would not work? Any reason why I should choose one over another? Other opinions/suggestions? Thanks! 8. I've since found that procctv's website does a decent job of explaining some of the differences in the cards, such as: "GV-1240-8 and GV-1240-16 are combo cards providing not only a video capture card but also a built in DSP display board and an audio input board. The DSP display board displays real-time (30fps) video on all cameras and an ancillary composite video-out port through which defined camera images can be sent to a secondary composite monitor. The DSP does not affect recording speeds. The number of audio inputs is equal to the number of video inputs. The other primary difference between the GV-600, GV-800 and the GV-1240 series of video capture cards is the speed. GV-1240 series boards have real-time display (30fps/camera) and recording speed of 240 frames per second, allowing real-time viewing with recording speeds of up to 30 frames per second per camera. When critical applications call for full motion video, the GV-1240-8 will provide 30fps per camera and the GV-1240-16 will provide recording speeds of between 15 and 30fps per camera. Software is basically the same as for the GV-600 and GV-800 series." That's been quite helpful, FYI. If others know of similar comparisons on other websites, I'd appreciate it as well. Thanks
  9. I'm looking to install a 8-camera system for my home, so I was thinking about buying a 12-camera card in case I want to add some. But I don't know where to start as far as which model line I should look at 600/650/800/1120/etc? Is there a good comparison grid somewhere of features? also what's a "capture card" vs a "combo card"? What are the types of things I should be considering? I'd like web viewing, possible live TV viewing, recording with markers when motion was detected, high quality resolution, optional hardware trigger input (ie door bell or hardware motion sensor). Might like one monitor specifically to show the front door camera. Email alerts. Are these the things that differ amongst these cards? Any guidance appreciated. I've looked on geovision and usavision site but they don't have a good view from my perspective
