Qsee QSD2316L DVR & the net

Makes sense to me. Still fighting with Verizon over them charging me for a month of service I didn't receive or use. Now on 4th bill collector after providing the first three with proof of returned equipment (fiber optics = no service without equipment) and proof of another service provider. I am paying $60 a month less because there's more than one provider is at the street. ITS ALL ABOUT THE MONEY.
  2. Thanks Mike, learnt a lot from the video, slept thru "CCTV 101"
  3. Buy from DealExtreme, several times, always use paypal. Here's one for you Rory- [edit by mod-store link removed]
  4. Jimbo120, I brought the Q-See QT528 from Costco and love it! It came with quality (Q-See) R59 cables and a Distribution Power Supply Box not one of those splitters. The set-up I bought had 4 - 1/3" CCD Sony sensor cameras rated at 520tvl. link- [edit by mod-please no store links, manufacturer only] For critical front door and close up locations I spend the extra money on CNB VCM-24VF VANDAL DOME Cameras.

    Security camera wire conduit?

I used plastic conduit for my install. It's just to discourage or slow down the perp. Best option is to install above 12ft and hide the wiring.

    New CCTV setup advice please

IP cameras are expensive and the WiFi option is limited in distance. Cat 5 with baums with work much better and for less money with IP or anolog cameras.

    My home made PTZ camera

Wow! If anything looked like it would attract lightning that's it! Don't know if it's possible but can you install a lightning rod in a higher tree? Hopefully that will provide an easier path to ground than your tower. Around here the cell towers are being design like trees. Up close you can tell but 1/2 mile a way it's not such an eyesore.

    My home made PTZ camera

Remember from my college days taking a course in meteorology where the prof was talking about the damage from lightning. He point out the electrical potential that was develop as the storm approached, and that everything started building a charge at their highest point. That a lot of damage happens without direct strikes. Question he asked was "What do you think happens when the potential is removed by the lightning?" That's when most of the damage occurs when this build up of electrons is release in a nanosecond back into the ground. Ask your ham operators what do they think of isolating the tower from the ground thru some commercial/ heavy duty rubber pads. Personally I would then install lightning rods (two) diagonally on the top and use the proper size insulated (not bare) grounding wire into separate ground rods that are connected/bonded at ground level. This way you give the lightning a path while leaving your electronics with some protection. I am Not an Engineer!

    My home made PTZ camera

OMG! Surprised the permit police did not stop you. That thing is Huge! Installing it deserves it's own thread. Definitely make sure you ground it. Lighting will like it more than you. Any idea on the weight?

    camera electronically deters spiders

That could be a benefit? No surprise packages when you're walking thru the grass. Had one neighbor that had an afgan. That animal left deposits that would put a horse to shame! Definitely not bio-degradeable!
  11. Sounds like that "questionable" camera is shorting out and turning off your DVR. Surprised it's not tripping out or blowing fuses in you DC PS. Can also try a different cable ( to elminate that as well). I would not keep trying it, could cause issues with the DVR.

    My home made PTZ camera

Awesome! One sure way of keeping costs down, building it with stuff you have laying around the shop. Thanks for sharing. What's the distance on the house on top of the mountain? Might want to check into any privacy laws affecting the use of your camera.

    More Storms on the way

Got 7" in the last 24hr. Sister in law in Schenectady can't get home because they closed all the bridges over the Mohawk River. It's cresting. Starting to believe in 2012 . . . .
  15. I installed a two-stage light for my cousin. Awesome! Low light (enough to see) and bright light when motion was detected. Best of both worlds. Been looking for one for my place but haven't had any luck yet.

HDD RPM speed important on a DVR?

Newegg has their green drive (1tb) for $54 w/ free shipping with Promo Code: EMCYTZT715 Specs are for DVR's and it "cool" running http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?SID=u1194913t3264378f9fp0dd0c0s701&AID=10440897&PID=1225267&Item=N82E16822136782&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-cables-_-na-_-na
  17. Exactly. It'll come down to you just figuring out how to keep a camera out of reach of a crack head and still be useful. Dan That's exactly the problem. Ignore the "minor" inicidences. Mayor Rudy during his term instructed his police force to enforce all the laws including quality of life issues. Crime drop drastically. Rapists were caught jumping subway turnstyles. All criminal activity dropped because the scum buckets knew it was not going to be tolerated. Guess you can call it appeasement on the most basic level. It gets worst, never better when you bend for those who want to take advantage.

    Hurricane Irene in Rockland

Hurricane Irene in my neck of the woods. (Stony Point, NY) No water problems for me. Spent Saturday morning cleaning out the gutters, because I saw on the camera that the gutters were overflowing during an earlier storm. Have the gutter screens, and haven't cleaned leaves in over ten years, but there was an 1" of muck in the gutters. No water in the house but my brother's stream which is usually a trickle came up to the top of his bank which is at least 12ft drop off his back yard. This stream turned into a river and wiped out RT 208 in Orange county, NY. Worst part of the storm was the wind last night around 6pm. Can't wait to see how many trees it took out and if I can get out of my road. -Ed

    Another VCM-24VF Question

well i have had excellent customer service from, and have purchased all my equipment (VCM-24VF) cameras from surveillance-video.com, they are out of NYC....and they are an authorized dealer of all CNB products...which is very important... +1 same for me. Quick turn-around!
  20. OK got together enough cash to upgrade my front door camera to a CNB VCM24VF. Manual says to wire to + and - terminals. No problem except my green adapter at the plug has no such markings? Traced out the leads to a red and brown wires at power input JK502/503. Would I be correct in assuming that red is positive? Already have 12VDC at camera location. Thanks, Ed
  21. Thanks Rory! Did not want to find out the hard way. Figured the green adapter was actually for 24VAC.
  22. Rory any idea who the manufacturer is? I have the QT-528 TIA -Ed

    Q-see MCS remote software demo

Good info! What cameras did you decide to order? Just got a CNB VCM-24VF yesterday for my front door. The Q-See bullets QSC-1352W (Image Sensor: 1/3” Sony color CCD, 520TV lines) I got are just fine for seeing whats going on, especially when what I am looking at is 45-60 ft away.
