  1. this is what it says for the camera specs on ir

"4 times brighter than general IR LED"

so that would go with what you said about blasting the area with ir....?

    im not debating, im learning....

I like the look of that camera with ir and all else built in, rather than going with a box cam in an enclosure with a separate ir blaster....

the only i dont like is the lens, would rather have varifocul, i think...

in analog system i only try to use varifocal but is it as important in an ip system, where the image is larger already....?

  2. the MN2LP supports hot-swap with RAID 1 (mirroring) and RAID 0 (Stripping), allowing the protection against Hard Drive failures or expands your useable drive space;

hot swap RAID 1 with only 2 drive slots? That's a first.

well i guess im gonna look at qnap or lacie....i've read too many failure stories on netgear units

  3. Hi Tom....

    1. Not all administrator settings are available remotely, some settings only made at unit

    2. no hdmi output, only vga and is limited to 1024x768.....

actually, after reviewing a little more those might be my only gripes...

you seem to be the resident expert on aver units, so info coming from you is appreciated...thanks

Actually 1 other question...what if I need more than 16 channels...would I just put in 2nd unit and use the cms software to view?

Wondering if they will have a 32 ch. unit in the future

  4. Been looking at aver hybrid dvrs...for storage options I can go 3 different ways...

    1. Hard drive in the dvr

    2. Esata.

    3. Nas

I want to go with #3 question is on the setup...do I just connect nas to same switch as dvr? Should it be connected to mb port or gb port? I read in the aver manual there is a setting to choose what storage option I am using? Is there any other configuring with this? If going like this I don't need any hard drive at all in the dvr?

    Thx?

  5. Also Soundy is spot on,

    3. Almost all cameras currently available have only 10/100 ports' date=' so your entire network doesn't have to be gigabit. We commonly use a switch that has eight 10/100 PoE ports, and two gigabit ports - the cameras connect to the PoE ports, and the DVR and NAS connect to the gigabit port.[/quote']

Thats a friggin brilliant way to do it

Thanks It was mainly done as a cost-effective measure, as all-GbE switches are still a bit spendy... or were when we started implementing this setup about four years ago; they're a lot cheaper now.

I've posted this plenty of times... this is a basic layout of the network we use, tied into the customer's network so they have VPN access, and so the DVR and NAS have internet access to send alert emails:

So your "surveillance" switch doesn't connect back to first switch or router via gigabit? 10/100 is ok?
