  1. Of course, there are many ways of doing it with pinhole cameras and the like.

How about this one from seco larm?

    http://www.jmacsupply.com/mobile/product.aspx?ProductCode=seco%2Dlarm%2Dev%2D5105%2Dn1sq&404;http://www.jmacsupply.com:80/Seco_Larm_EV_5105_N1SQ_p/SECO-LARM-EV-5105-N1SQ.htm?gclid=CLHlkp_FjsACFWELMgodNz4AzA

It has a 1.5mm lens and also comes with a mullion mount plate or you can remove it altogether from the plate.

Not sure what qualifies as cheapo but these are about $100 wholesale.

Because you mention flood lights, I just wanna mention that I find led floods to be ideal for use with cameras because to me, the light coverage seems to make for a clear picture without the deep shadows of traditional flood lights

  2. I purchased the http://www.swann.com/au/swnvk-870824 which come with 8 channels NVR (NVR8-7082) few weeks ago and found that the email alerts and motion detection doesn't work together. When email alerts are enabled, it will work for few hours before the whole system crashes. i.e. Motion detection recording and email alerts stop working until the system is rebooted by removing the power source.

I have already reported this issue to swann first and second level support, who has no solution.

Today I swapped my NVR with a new one from the place of purchase and finds that the new one does the same thing.

Has anyone else come accross this issue with email alerts ?

You have tagged this response onto every post that mentions Swann plus posted your own thread.

Please use some sort of etiquette.

  3. If you go with passive injectors, keep in mind that the distance is limited to about 130 feet as opposed to 328 feet.

I'd actually challenge you on that statement. I don't think those numbers are factual. At the very least you can't make a general statement on the method without considering the manufacturer or product.

That's fine, I'm certainly no expert on the matter. I'm just stating what I have read.

    Here's one source.

    http://www.passivepoe.com/faq.html

Maybe I'm not properly considering the product but it seems better to me to figure worst case.

My thought was that limit is why mid span injectors may be passive but Poe switch typically (or never) are not.

I'm certainly not looking to poo poo the idea of using them and in most residential situations, I would think they're completely fine, especially seeing that you can just mid span them if needed.

One other consideration though, I see one if the op's mentioned switches is a gigabit switch (probably not needed here) but if he does choose to go with gigabit, a regular passive Poe injector won't work because passive Poe uses the spare pairs that gigabit requires in order to work.

  4. I understand they are rebranded hikvision but I wonder if they are the same quality.

I was talking to the guy at ADI the other day and he says they're selling a lot of Hikvision and with very little to no issues.

I hear of a lot of issues with lorex and Swann. Though truthfully I have no experience with Swann but I have serviced a few Lorex systems and they seem to have issues, mostly being cheap cameras that condensate under the glass, etc.

is it definite that Swann is hikvision rebranded? The only reason I ask is because some of their equipment looks a lot like Digimerge/Flir but I don't actually know.

  5. I agree with Don here.

I don't see it as entrapment.

So lets say I have a store and there's a corner I can't see from the counter. I have merchandise in that corner and a camera that focuses on the merchandise in that area.

Someone comes in and doesn't see the camera. They steal some merchandise. Is that entrapment? The people that go in that corner know that they're not supposed to steal.

  6. Yeah, the hikvision cube is nice.

There's also the GeoVision cubes which are available in wifi and take 5v plug in for power. They also have a pir sensor (as does the hikvision) which is better for picking up motion without every piece of dust and changing light setting it off.

The geo vision cube also has an actual visible led for light (also activated by motion)

I use one of these in a customers warehouse entrance and it works great.

  7. I can't really speak straight to Blue Iris because I haven't used it.

But you would be best to do a little reading on Video Analytics in order to learn what you can do and what you'll need in order to do it.

A couple of things to consider would be maybe just setting the motion sense area to a very small area like just around the mailbox or something.

You can control the areas that motion is sensed from, so if the street is not within the motion area, cars won't set it off.

Another option is to use a camera with alarm inputs and put a contact on the mailbox door so that when the mailbox is opened, it triggers recording.

There are plenty of wireless sensors for this.
