  1. yep, going to try something like that
  2. no-one else gets logged out after 24 hours (my estimate?) weird I just use google chrome and most of the other sites I use have no issue
  3. ok here's what happens, it logs me out the next day... is there somewhere to configure this? so I can set it at a week or two weeks etc
  4. Placed Order ended up being $350, I bought... 1 x 5m 940nm strip IP67 1 x 5m 850nm strip IP67 2 x 100w IP65 or whatever Power supplies I looked at these guys: http://www.infraredintelligence.com.au/minibar.htm however it's $199 for a 1m double strip. what I'm going to do is mount each strip on a 5m long bit of timber, then stuff around with mounting them on a wall of one of our yards. there will be lots of Pictures
  5. sorry, by CPU usage I mean CPU usage on the machine your running the smart client on, not the server. at full resolution your PC is attempting to decode 17 x High def screens live, that's quite a task.
  6. So what was it that you bought out of curiosity? If you look at the Milestone logs they will tell you a bit more about what's going on... maybe try dropping the Camera's output resolution to Milestone, when I was testing crappy camera's some of them required the resolution to be dropped before they would work reliably with Milestone
  7. Might finally get these ordered next week! Maxed out the company Credit card... OOps
  8. go back to camera manufacturer, is it ONVIF compliant?
  9. yeah and CPU usage on the PC when he's using the smart client, the mobile server uses the servers's CPU, so if it's "terrible" while he's remotely accessing then you probably find it's maxing the servers ECU too.
  10. your config is probably not powerful enough for what you're running
  11. Your question is really not a CCTV type of question at all... it's a windows question and could probably be best handled in a more appropriate forum. I never open up RDP access over simple port forwarding to windows boxes. It is an extremely risky thing to do as you must really be vigilant that everything is locked down. And, you are quick to dismiss that your contractors would not do something like this, but how well are they securing your passwords? The only way the system is secure is if YOU are the only one with those credentials. If anything you can make them some super restricted account for access, or, better yet, use something like Team Viewer if they need to look at the system so that they don't have access to your machine. Your machine might have had more than another profile created, you could have a ton of mal-ware installed. If you use the same password on any other machines on your home network they could be compromised too as it would take someone with the right tools about 5 minutes to scan and infect every machine on your home LAN that they could gain access to via the one with open RDP access. If it's really that important to you to be able to RDP into the machine, you should look into using something like LogMeInIgnition which proxies everything through their servers, so that it's more secure (done via HTTPS) then a direct connection as you are doing.... or, you can swap out the cheesy router you probably have at the location with something that does SSL VPN and only use the SSL VPN connection for gaining remote access. Good info, I suggest moving remote access to non-standard ports, if you have the ability lock down remote access to certain IP's etc... this could be hard if some of the locations your logging in from are not behind static IP's
  12. a few basics. the firewall off and anti-virus off are very bad idea's make sure it's fully windows updated, set it to check for new updates as regularly as you can, install all service packs. with the Firewall you need to have it on but with exceptions for the services that Milestone needs on the Anti-virus you need to have scan exceptions for the milestone files (*.PIC and something else I forget) if you have no anti-virus I recommend Avast, it's free and just works! you need to make sure you have a router that's just forwarding the ports your server actually needs, if you have the whole PC forwarded (like a DMZ or something) your just ASKING for your PC to get hacked... now lastly on the PC security.... step one, right click on my computer and go manage, then expand out users and computers, then users, create a new admin account under a new username, give it at 15+ character (I like sentences) password, then DISABLE the Administrator login!!!! Step two, set 15+ character passwords for every other user that has access, do the same thing for all Milestone users. leave NO account open/without a new password. then your PC should be in reasonable shape.
  13. I do a lot of network management, chances are they have out of band ports blocked, or unknown websites blocked or the likes.
  14. hang on, I thought he was attempting to connect to his corporate security system, not his home one... makes sense now.
  15. How is the Security Camera system's routes not being setup correctly in the routers "not a business issue" if they are not helping due to it not setup correct, report it to the business owner.
  16. am I to understand you have Milestone installed at two sites, when your on the WIFI on one of the sites it does not connect yet when your on the other it does? if this is the case then the port forward is incorrect at the site it will not connect on, normally in routers it says something like: Traffic from WAN, forward on port #### to port #### at IP XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX on LAN interface, this is what is probably configured on your problem site... if you wish to use the WAN IP to connect to that site the traffic rule/port forward needs to say Traffic from WAN/LAN(all sources), forward on port #### to port #### at IP XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX on LAN Interface
  17. good point i can get 2 MP hiks AND save $100......... the hik are not 90 though we just use the IPQ2322x's they are $250 ish 3mp and 86 degree view will not help if your on a Hik vision DVR/NVR if you only have 60/70 degree view maybe get 3? (I know excessive, but I have plenty of overlap on my garage and it's been quite handy when/if one of the camera's goes down)

    Terminology?

honestly, most packages can do most functions, telling them apart generally comes down to personal preference on a General basis most camera's come with a software package, this software package will talk to most camera's from the same manufacturer but not others, if you buy a separate package that's ONVIF for example, it will then talk to most compliant camera's which gives you a broader range, seeing as we're in the IP Forum you'll find plenty of software packages. if you have a look around you can find comparisons between DVR/NVR/PC based solutions...
  19. Terrible idea, use a pair of 90's, the drop in pixel density trying to spread them so far is far from worth it.

    Terminology?

the camera does not play the footage... the Camera's record to the NAS... you then have an application which you load onto your computer which goes and finds that footage on the NAS, and plays it back
  21. I would get one of thesehttp://www.axis.com/products/p12_series/ and drill it into the door around 5 foot high, most people walking towards your door look down, the best door camera's is one they don't know is there... hopefully if need IR the Strip lighting I'm going to test will work!
  22. you're going to laugh... check this link: http://www.wikihow.com/Blind-a-Surveillance-Camera. we have quite a few factories, so I'm going to shove it up on part of the roof or a wall whatever and see how it goes when we shut down the lights
  23. well, the $200 for the cable + timer + install is far better than the $450 ish PoE IR we have (that's irritating on a number of levels) my boss is not back till next week so I'll try it then.... might even try for some 840nm and 940nm so I can do a more accurate comparo, I think this stuff might be the ideal thing for me to protect my home (when I get one) as I can run it along the front fence and down the sides of the fence no worries, even better it's 12v so I could run a mini solar setup to power it all.
