    RJ-45 Cat5 Crimping

Something like this would probably make it easier http://www.smarthome.com/89210.html?src=WG1002279 Doug
  4. Is a Tibet Systems/Magic Radar/Isis/Eyemax etc system? Do you have the correct port ranges forwarded to the DVRs? You'll have to use a different range for the second DVR. Does the IP address for the DVRs match the router settings Is the "Network" box marked in user settings? Is the firewall configued properly? Are you using the same version client and server software, not all versions are compatable with each other. Doug

    Elevator surveillance

Running anything in the elevator shaft is generally against code, so its unlikely you will be able to use the shaft as a path for the cable. My advice would be to ask the elevator company if they have a spare twisted pair in the travelling cable, in many cases there will be a circuit available for CCTV use, if not then ask the customer to have the elevator company to add a twisted pair to the travelling cable. The elevator company will then run the cable to a point outside the elevator equipment room where you can connect to it. I wouldn't use wireless and I wouldn't attempt to run anything down the shaft Doug.

    Home installation

If you have two lines lines and are talking on a two line phone then sometimes you may hear the alarm faintly, but if you only have one phone line in the house the phones should be dead while the alarm is communicating. It sounds like you don't have line seizure, the RJ31/38 jack is probably installed incorrectly.

    Dedicated Micros HD Replacement

I think he's talking about a means to connect an IDE drive to the USB port of a PC, something like an external hard drive case.
  9. I am impressed with the specs of the first one, that must be some gel to both insulate and improve conductance at the same time. "Filled with silicone gel to insulate and improve conductance".
  10. 8080 is the default port used by Linksys for remote router adminstration, if you have this enabled in the router it may be causing a conflict. The port can be changed if required in the router settings. I don't know how Hughes satelite service works, but many DSL modems are actually combined modem/routers and act as a DHCP server and dole out an internal IP address to the machine(s). Most can be configured to "bridge" mode which will act as a straight modem. The ip address you used to scan for open ports is an internal IP address, probably issued by the modem/router What is the IP address returned by "www.whatismyip.com" or a similar service, try to access the DVR by that address not the address returned by "ipconfig" or the IP address in the router status page..

  12. If the only problem you are having is a "multi access denied", then you are logged on to the server as an admin user or the user you are logged in as doesn't not have the multiple access box checked. Log out of the server and log back in with a user that has muti access allowed. You should then be able to connect from the client software. You can't be logged in to the server and from the client with the same user unless "multi access" is selected in the user attributes.

    UK Marines

I can't say I would have behaved any differently since I've never been in that situation, and while I'm certainly glad to see them home safely, I was bitterly disapointed in their actions, Hundreds of thousands of long gone British military personnel must be collectively turning in their graves about now. Warriors they aren't, and now they are selling their stories to the media. They should thank their lucky stars they are home and shut up, I cringe when I hear one of them talking about their "ordeal"

  18. I'll agree that focusing can be problematic with the Cam Master, as the readings do tend to jump around all over the place, but I have not had any problems with the readings jumping around when using it for measuring signal levels. I have no way to verify if they are accurate or not. Doug

    Was CAT5 a mistake?

At 500ft you will probably need an active balun at the head end. The voltage drop at 500ft drawing 500ma on 24awg even if you double up for power will be severe. http://www.altronix.com/app_notes/calc.php I haven't seen any interference issues running AC or DC in the same UTP cable Doug
  20. you should always create a new folder, if you back up to an existing folder or your desktop it will overwite some of your existing files
  21. If its accidental disconnection you are concerned about then something like the BW-250 or BW-375 might work, they are really designed for low voltage transformers. http://www.mierproducts.com/new_products.htm Doug

    VGA extender

I've used dozens of these with excellent results, they come in lengths of up to 100 feet but I haven't used any that long so I'm not sure of the quality at that length, but certainly the25ft and 50ft cables have worked very well for me. They come in m-m, m-f and f-f. They also have slim line extension cables but I haven't tried them so again, I can't comment on the quality. http://www.sfcable.com/catalog/wholesalecables/VG10-50.html Doug

    I3 DVR's

I put in two about three years ago, they were 16 channel machines, 120gb hard drive, 30FPS total and running on W98, I believe the model number was 1816. They have been rock solid without any problems whatsoever until one of them had a hard drive fail about a month ago. I replaced the hard drive and everything is back to normal. They had most of the features that other PC based machines have and are fairly straightforward to use, but I have no idea what the current versions are like. Doug
