Got to remember that when the PTZ is pointed at location A, location B is not covered at all. This is the advantage for multiple fixed cameras over a single PTZ.

A hand held spot monitor is a god send for focusing cameras. Aside from that, always try to focus the camera as best you can *before* you are up on a lift/ladder.

The loss of redundancy alone makes mega pixel undesirable IMHO. Loss or corruption of one signal results in loss of coverage of a huge area (go go gadget laser pointer), whereas more cameras are more difficult to disrupt all at once. Falls back to ancient wisdom about eggs, a basket and an unhappy time.

It has been my belief that the people who create the technology (Intel) are going to do it better than the others who mimic (AMD, Via, SiS, etc.). We have never made nor will we ever make a PC DVR using any platform other than Intel.

Remember that even though your Cable/DSL can download up to 1.5Mbps, your DVR can only send 256Kbps. This is where your bottleneck is probably occurring. Try using H.263/MPEG4 codec and lower image quality to the lowest acceptable level. This will lower the amount of data being sent by the DVR and should speed up your operation.

Perhaps they have changed a setting in their codec? I am sure an issue of this magnitude would be known and solved.

Our VM line of PC DVRs was based on the Winnertec card set. It was put EOL April of 2006, but had a nice 4 year lifespan. Very few failures...robust software...all-in-all very nice product.

What speed Internet connections do you have at the DVR and at the remote client?

A lot of PC DVR cards use either the Brooktree or Techwell chip sets.

My opinions of superior PC DVR systems is biased heavily , but I will let you know that we have used Chance-I products in the past. We sold 5x 32ch Chance-I based PC DVRs... We replaced 4 of them with 2x our 16ch VM2 PC DVRs and the last one performed so horribly, we refunded the customer and ate the install cost. I was pleased to remove the Chance-I product from our line card and I refuse to evaluate any further products from them in the future.

I personally prefer crimp-on, but our installers are allowed to use either.

Our installers commonly see ground loops and most of the time it is from a lazy electrician grounding to a metal I-beam or stub instead of running their ground line back to the earth ground.
