Alek, As you stated, they are catching up and with much better pricing... Levon
  2. Hey Guys.. What do you think of CoVi IP cameras??? We have used IPIX, but this brand is cheaper and apperently as good... I have few applications that I want to use this technology and I want to know what you take is or recommendation vs. IPIX... Levon

    1/2 Mile Run

1/2 mile should be no problem for running cat5e using active hubs and baluns. I'd keep away from NVT though - issues concerning their support on the products and many restrictions on their hardware. Rather, I will recommend American Fibertek equipment, which we have been using more than 10 years and works exceptionally... Have not used any Telco equipment for similar application, but transfering video is not a problem. You will have excellent picture quality at the end of the run as at the begining of the run regardless the number of cameras that you transfer.. Of course, you will requre to use active hubs and active baluns to accomplish this, but then cost will justify the mean... unless if you go to fiber run and then the cost will shoot off the roof... 4. From 40G to 1TB built in or more using external hard drive and it is regardless of the number of ports... depending on the application and the customer's requirement... Most common DVR capacity for us is between 320G to 600G units and everything else below or above... We mainly use embedded and only few systems are base on windows or linux... We also recommend our customers to buy the systems with the least amount of hard drive space and if they have some computer knowledge, we assist them to add more hard drive capacity of their own, this way keep the overall costs lower... But sometimes, "you can take the horse to the water, but you can not force it to drink" Levon

Thomas, you are rocking man... Three machines?? Wow! Well, I use (2) only and none of them have Micro...f The first one is based on AMD 64-bit processessor, SATA hard Drives, Double Capacity DVD R/W, 256M Video Card, etc and complete Suse Linux 9.2 64-bit version with all the latest and greatest updates and apps, OpenOffice (1.9 version), all the stable graphics software for video, pictures, vectors, the Audio and Video software to hear or view everything I need, etc... and tons of games that available (not that I have time to play them)... - I use this machine 95% at the time... Second one is a Mac G4 - do not ask me why, it is just because of their OS X ... Just wanted to find out what is going on in their world... Mainly using for graphics design purposes and reading or modifying CAD files for my projects... Of course, kvm switch to juggle between them... along with 19" LCD from Bosch... Third, fourth and the fifth machines (for my family members) all are based on Linux and I have not had any complaints specially from my kids on any limitations on games or anything else they need... At work, nothing but linux based workstations and notebooks. Servers are based on FreeBSD and running some (1) Shmindows app (one of the engineer needs it), but 99% Linux or FreeBSD apps... I think one of our engineers still using a notebook that came with XP, but it is matter of time until he changes as well.. Well, I will concur with some of your assessment and they are very vaild and it all depends what you really want to do... In my case, Microswift does not have any chance now or ever to be part of what I do! Levon

Thomas, your points are well taken... Do you prefer Windows or Linux and why? You are stressing basics on what does make Linux "difficult", however are you really following the trend? Have you seen the latest Suse 9.3 or even 9.2 distros and ease in which it works with well known hardware? What you are descibing is real only if you are not up to date on what is going on.. I will quite using computers or even Internet if I have to go back to Micro...f. You are relaying some known issues with Linux, most of which are very manageable now than ever before and it is getting better and better everyday... I am not trying to have people to convert from their favorite OS, rather puting my two cents on why to use Linux. If you do not belive in it, then that is fine... But I will still argue that Linux offers more stability and better solutions than any favorite os based apps. If I want to design graphics, I use Mac and besides that, everything else I do is with Linux and it did not cause me any problems that I could not fix in 10 minutes vs. Windows related problems that are unmeasurable... E-mail backup

Rory, Can you download 3.1G of info and make ISO on DVD? This probably will be easiest solution... If not, then download Mini-installation ISO and then pick and choose the applications of your choice, which I will guide you step by step... This is a basic ISO that installs the kernel and all its dependencies and it is only 64M in size... Once it is installed, then through YAST (Suse version is the easiest in the market) you can install all of the available applications one by one or by package of your choice... It may sound or may seem difficult, but I can tell you is that it is extremely simple once you do it... Levon

    E-mail backup

Rory, You can install Dual boot option which linux will provide... Let me give you the download URL that you can download the software and install... Can you please give me the info on your processessor? Is it 32-bit or 64-bit? Dependent which one you have, there is a seperate download available in a CD format or DVD format.. Let me know. Levon

    E-mail backup

Herm, Dependent what he pays the hosting company, he can keep his e-mails with them for certain period of time and I think it is 30 days... and depends what he is paying for space.... However, if he wants his e-mails stored in his new Server, then why pay the hosting company if he can have it managed locally? I can see 3 other options: 1.Linux version e-mail server - This is free and you can download and use immediately! 2.FreeBSD e-mail server - This is free and you can download and use immediately! OR... 3.You can use IMAIL, which will cost over a $1,000 since it is Smindows based... I personally prefer the FreeBSD mail server package... It is probably the most stable e-mail server package... Thomas, I will concur with you only if you are using the latest and greatest PC hardware. Otherwise any PC hardware that is over 3 months or older, drivers are available... When you state software install can be a pain, it is only if you do not follow simple instructions.. Dependencies are great, as Linux will not allow you to install anything if the dependencies either not installed or not available... In case of Yast (installer for Suse), if you are installing any software or updating any part of any software, it automatically will download or delete any dependencies and give you a complete and clean install. There is no guessing or surprises if you follow very simple instructions.... Dependencies and the clean code is what protects this OS against any virus attacks or even spyware... I again concur the issue with drivers only if your hardware is the latest and greatest... At the time of the installation, it will give you what available on CD or DVD, but then when you are updating the system, it can give you latest available driver in any of the mirror sites... Chances are the distro manufacturer may not have or may not post such drivers, but there are quite of many other mirror sites that will and they do everyday. Thomas, I am not trying to convince you to change to Linux, but lets get the information streight... It is simpler to install and maintain Linux than any version of Windows, unless if you do not want to change and then no matter what we say and how we say it, will not make any difference... Levon

Data, why do you think Linux is not ready for "prime time?? Did you actually ever used it or even try using it?? Your response about Linux is the same as majority of the people who actually never used it or even followed its progress... I may understand that people may be hesitating to change and change is always difficult, but give me one good reason why someone should stay with Micro****.. Is it because their "stable" and bulet proof OS or is it the applications??? Or, people being lazy and all they do is complain regardless what you put on the table regardless how good it may be... I am not asking people to change and I really do not care what they do.. Rather, explore the best and most cost effective options available in OS world... In case of Linux, yes it is a different OS, yes it is somehow may look "difficult" to install and may be difficult to operate, but is it?? Here are basic questions that will help to understand why Linux vs. Microshaft: How often to you have crashes caused by your OS? What exactly do you do when it happens and how easy is it to recover? How often in the middle of your work, you get blue death of screen and can not explain what happened? When you are getting updates (not service packs), do you use them because you fear that your system may be hijacked or because?? How many times you had viruses causing your system crash or unstable? How often you have spyware causing your system go to ..... How about the costs of such OS and specially the applicatoins?? And many more... Look at the website in this thread and someone figured out to sell something that does not belog to them. In case of Linux, the whole community is writing and fixing any issues that ever come up and this is world wide assistance... You do not pay for the OS or pay for any of its applications and I am not sure if you can get any better deal.. In my case, I make contributions to any of the distros that I use at home or at work... I do not have to do it, but if a piece of software that I got that is free and available to anyone and such software increases my productivity, then least I can do is make such contributions... Well, I can tell you that it is virtually impossible to have virus attack or spyware to cause any problems on any Linux distro.. With over 20,000 stable and approved applications in the market, you have a replacement for any windows based apps that you want... How about stability? If for whatever reason your system gets stuck, you just restart the GUI and not the entire system... No defragmentation or scandisk needed ever, as it maps and make best use of your hard drives. I understand hardware failure and I do not understand in case of hardware, the questions is not if, rather when... but in case of Linux, you replace the defective hardware and then kernel takes over without any issues.. Ok, lets say you like to use some of your windows apps, you can run them on Linux using WINE feature, which is again makes your life simpler and with less problems... Data, all I am suggesting to you is that instead of being part of Microstaff followers, try something new and I will tell you once you do it and observe the results, you will never go back to them anymore.... It is your and everyone's call to decide to have a easier or difficult life with your OS... Choice is yours and coming from someone who has been using for over 10 years, I can tell you that Linux has been ready for "Prime Time"... Levon

Rory, If you want linux, it is extremely simple to work with it... Do you have an extra PC, does not matter older or new?? Then you will need CD burner or better, DVD burner and decent internet connection. If you have all the basics above, I can give you URLs to download Suse distro 9.2 stable version and then guide you with all the updates that you need via their update manage, called Yast... The rest, well you will have access to everything you will even need including ability to run your favorite windows apps using Linux Wine... There over 20,000 stable and solid apps available in Linux platform at the moment, so anything that you are using in windows, there is a replacement for it... I have been using most Linux in the last 10 years and lately, I am using distros from Suse and from Mandrake.. I prefer Suse, becuase the simplicity of the functionality and ease of update and changes that you will need.... and yes, I run few windows apps, i.e. Corel Draw and several other on top of it using WINE... My latest catch is desktop version of FreeBSD... So far, it is even more stable and reliable than Linux (just much better structure and cleaner code per 1,000 lines). All our servers are working on FreeBSD latest stable version 5.xx (6.0 stable version should be available soon, as it is still beta at the moment). As soon as the stable desktop version of FreeBSD becomes available, I will be one of the first to use it.... No much difference on GUI between both distros and nice thing is that both share the same apps without any problems... They are fun to use, very simple and it is crash proof and by the way, THEY WORK much better than any Windows version in existence...! Levon

VJD, can you sell the product for less than its cost and still make profit?? Micro....f makes sure that there is a price fixing on their OS, regardless if you have the master contract or not... If you are downloading their software and if you need their updates, as you may already know, if your copy of the software is pirated or registered before, you can not... therefore, your call will go to our friends in India, and someone will be asking too many questions before they give you activation code... What surprises me the most is marketing tactics used to attract people and to sell something that is illegal period and in this case, any software download is illegal from this site.... I know illegality is matter of interpretation, as long as you have not harmed anyone nor profited from a piece of software that you had nothing to do with.. but, this website is really pushing their luck... Besides Micro...f, they sell all the majors products at prices that is not possible if they actually had the cost of such products... Instead of worrying about the lincensing or if the product is legal or not, what also surprises me is that majority masses are still hooked on this unstable OS and then they complain why certain things happen... In case of Linux, such problems do not exist and with over 20,000 stable applications, Linux can take over the desktop in the same manner as they have done in Servers OS side of the business... if only people will stop wasting their time on Micro...f created problems and rather try using Linux... DVR Question

Not sure where you can get this information as no manufacturer will ever admit or deny nor will publish such information.... Unless someone is working for such manufacturer and is willing to "blow a whistle"... In our case selling many of GE DVRs, we had less than 2% failure and mostly caused by mishandling of the product, including but not limited to customers "modifying" internal guts of the hardware and then complaining that it does not work right... Few of them were damaged due to shipping method or inadequate packaging materials... Few were damaged during the transit... But nothing like 8% claim... I have been in their local manufacturing facility and I can tell you first hand, the quality of the process is out of this world... In case of DM, well I will tell you that their failure rate with us was over 50% and that caused us to drop them across the board... Their customer support and technical support was and I am sure still is as bad... probably competes with Panos customer and technical support... Levon
