    Why use a DVR card?

To add to the above.. If your computer can "see" the device- recording off the device should be no problem. Will Sony Vegas, or xyz software work? I imagine you could configure it to capture raw video , but you will not have advanced functions as DVR software provides. As mentioned by Rory Luxriot would be a much better solution as it would offer "Motion detection" (EG only records when motion is detected, and has adjustable frame-rate options, etc) Could you capture with xyz non-dvr type software? Capturing raw video would result in HUGE vid files, using a DVR type program would reduce the size of file, TIME SEARCHING THRU SAME IF A EVENT HAS OCCURRED- PLUS adds such very useful features as a time stamp, Anti-tampering watermarking to the image/vid which is needed for court cases. PS: POST BACK WHAT YOU END UP DOING... in as much detail as possible. Name, model, version of hardware /software... any special tricks, tips that YOU would like to "see" if you were searching.... 2. While I understand not wanting to spend money on a new card- and this might be expensive depending on what country you live in... I would seriously thinking about buying a new card. BTW: What OS are you running? x86 (32-bit), x64? Windows ???? How old is the card? How much do you have in it? Not what you want to hear, and I wish someone could point you towards the drivers but I'd weigh my time, vs how old, the expense to replace vs how much time trying to find drivers. PS: Pic to me is fuzzy... Might help if you re-up a high resolution pic. Suggestion: Do you remember where you bought it? Have you looked on Ebay, etc to try to ID the card?, find someone selling like item? .

stripping of operating system to make it stable

Besides what securicorp suggested above: GOOGLE: black viper xp services Note if you're running Vista I think there is info on the various services as well. .
  4. Sounds like the drivers aren't installed properly - or the device is sharing a IRQ and the cards in your system are not playing well... Below info may be of help: (Note in some cases going into SAFE mode may required, or tried...) This site helped me sort out a Video Capture driver for a no-name card: http://btwincap.sourceforge.net/custom.html The site focusing on Bt848, Bt849, Bt878 and Bt879 based video capture boards * * * * * * Solution #1 "security key not found" . First try this solution Question I can not load PICO 2000. It says "security key not found" . if problem persists contact the dealer " I'm using Windows XP Pro . it also gives me a error cannot load DSR application ..likely all one in the same ?? Answer PICO 2000 need not require a password. In order to correct this situation, we need to COMPLETELY uninstall PICO from the add/remove programs in Control Panel. Then reboot.... Then install the software PICO 2000 again from the CD ( \Setup.exe) Choose PICO2000-104 (You should choose NTSC - PAL is a European standard) Restart computer-----Run English pack from the CD to change tio the English version (this takes away the question marks...this program is found in the PICO directory...just click on it) start PICO2000 from the desktop----don't touch any password - directly login. To recap here is the complete install process: 1. Plug the card into a PCI slot. 2. Choose a new system(win98 or windows XP) 3. Install the driver (from the CD \driver\) 4. Install the software PICO 2000 from the cd (\Setup.exe) 5. choose PICO2000-104 (You should choose NTSC - PAL is a European standard) (Note: if you use two cards, you must choose PICO2000-208; If you choose four cards, you must choose PICO2000-416.) 6. Restart computer-----Run English pack from the CD to change to the English version (this takes away the question marks...this program is found in the PICO directory...just click on it) start PICO2000 from the desktop----don't touch any password - directly login. Reply | Reply to Author | Forward | Print | Individual Message | Show original | Report Abuse This software was supplied with a UCC4 4-port capture card (with audio capture) but I can't get it working consistently. After installing the program I keep getting the message: dealer>. Well, it's holiday time and my isn't around right now. Does anyone have an idea what I am doing wrong. I was told that when using PICO 2000 with the above card I must not load the drivers, viz: 1. Star Imavision Video Capture 2. Star Imavision Audio Capture This procedure HAS worked (but on one machine only). The rest of the time no matter what I try I keep getting that damned message. Help gratefully received. TIA. Jim _______________________________________________________________________________ Well, I'll answer this myself because, after several hours of head scratching, I've sussed it out. When PICO 2000 says: What it is REALLY saying is: So I am not going to run. Might seem simple to most, but it perplexed me for ages. Therefore, the answer is to: 1. Tediously disable EVERYTHING non-essential in the PC 2. Get the PICO card to work (which it did when everything else was disabled) 3. Then start adding devices one after the other until the PICO card stops working (Security Key Not Found etc., etc.) That last device you added is the one causing the trouble in the first place. In my case an integrated INTEL NETWORK device on the motherboard. I disabled it in BIOS; got the PICO to work and then added a cheap PCI network card, which got me back online without upsetting the PICO. Yet prior to discovering this problem, Windows XP Pro reported everything hunky dory. No yellow exclamation marks or red crosses. Even now I cannot understand how this INTEL NETWORK device was buggering things up because it was not sharing IRQ, I/O or memory address with the PICO. Oh well....Another Wndows mystery unsolved. TIPS FOR ISTALLING AND RUINNING PICO 2000 VER. 1.8 WITH THE UCC4 4-PORT CAPTURE CARD FROM GAMMAGRAPHX INC. (WINXP PRO ROUTINE). 1. Put card in PCI slot 2. Restart the machine 3. Install drivers (Star Imavision Video/Audio capture) 4. Install PICO 2000 software. 5. Reboot the machine 6. Make sure you have FULL sharing enabled on file: c:\DSR-Video\ OTHER POINTS 1. The company that sold me this kit said I mustn't load the drivers because, if I did, the card wouldn't work. This is not true. The UCC4 card works with or without the drivers in Windows XP Pro. Without the drivers it seems to prefer IRQs 10 or 12 where it sits as audio and video devices>. 'Course if you don't load the drivers, WINXP Pro keeps prompting you for them each time you reboot. So if you don't want the drivers you have to keep cancelling out the Add New Hardware Wizard. A pain in the ass really. 2. There's a very clever bloke who has kindly supplied WDM drivers and other utlitites for this card which allow it to work with any WDM compatible Windows capture program (I tried them with Windows Movie Maker and Ulead MSPRO 7 Video Capture and they worked fine and you can even capture directly to MPEG 2 with Ulead using the right CODEC). Those drivers and some other stuff can be had here: http://btwincap.sourceforge.net/download.html These are Brooktree drivers which work with the UCC4 even though it says Connexant on the capture chip. Believe me. The Brooktree drivers work great. Meanwhile, BTSPy (also at the above URL) allows you to customise the card when installing the Brooktree Drivers. This allows any Windows program to access all four ports on the card (but so far I have not found a program that allows viewing them all at the same time). However, you can capture from up to four cameras individually by selecting the appropriate input. But no Quadding or multiplexing without the right software. Nevertheless, BTSpy required that your UCC4 is working with PICO 2000 (or other multiplex software) before it can spy out your card's capabilities. So, in case your card isn't working, here's what BTSPy reported for my card (when I tested it with the DICO software, which I DID manage to get to work). ************************************************ ### BtSpy Report ### General information: Name:ucc4 ver. 2.0 Chip: Bt878 , Rev: 0x00 Subsystem: 0x00000000 Vendor: Gammagraphx, Inc. The driver already supports the DPL3518, MSP34xx, PT2254, TDA7432, TDA8425, TDA9840, TDA9850, TDA9855, TDA9873, TDA9874, TDA9875, TEA6300 and TEA6420 and does not require extra information to drive them! If you are able to get your card working using this program , please , mail me this file (with any extra comments you would like to add) to: ejta...@tutopia.com , so I can add native support to your card in the next driver release! ************************************************************ The above setup and drivers (Brooktree) won't make PICO 2000 work, but they'll allow the UCC4 to work with any WDM application (like Windows Movie Maker or Ulead Video Capture etc., etc.). In these you will be able to access each port on the card and capture from each one idividually (but NOT all four at the same time, as you can with PICO 2000). Whew! I hope all this is useful to somebody. Kept me busy over Christmas anyway Jim

Lightening is killing my card, can anyone help? Please

Seems to me that lighting damage would be pretty common. - and one of those things NOT covered under warranty. (It would be nice to have info on exactly what is damaged- how repairs could be done locally.) I think due to the pricing on these cards (that they are not just "throw-aways) that the cards should be designed with replaceable fuseable links for a lack of a better word to protect the card itself that could be replaced easily in the field- with locally obtained parts. (Yes I know nothing can stop a DIRECT HIT) I don't know about Geo's polices about replacing boards / or repair options but this subject has me sort of wondering how Geo handles cards returned to them... Do they replace at no-charge? At Full retail?, or say a fixed rate to replace a card? (EG- Best case being Geo would replace /repair at no -charge -seeing how there is a huge mark-up on their products IMO) Lastly, and Geo might already do so... I think mfg's of such products should have info on how to protect / install their products instead of leaving this to third party hearsay. (Internet forums- and the like.) Getting back to the cards themselves- How about a thread in which people post pics of damaged cards, with info on what was done to repair them.. .

Which Geovision Card for my application ?

Thanks Rory, used GeoPlayer.exe as a general rule I don't like installing anything and everything. On the Playback, there were (3) channels, the fourth a blue screen- a couple of times during the playback screens appearing /disappearing. I would assume this is due to the player? On the playback itself, looked pretty fluid to me... more so than 7.5fps would be. On the number of channels being recorded, or should I say the number of CAMS being hooked up. Were 16 cams hooked up, or only (3)? In other words were the three recording only recording because motion was being detected... the other 13 channels (cams) idle? .

Rory, 1) I just tried two video programs that will work with about anything- and they (of course) would not play the video... Is there a way to export files made in a format playable on a PC that does not have Geovision software on it? If so if you could please re-up as I'd like to see the vid. If not- Is there a download link for Geo GEOX Codec's on Geovisions site that can be freely downloaded by someone who does not have a Geo product- but is considering Geo? 2) What chipsets are on the GV-800-16? Colour domes for a Pub

On that separate IR Illumination- in regards to it being used in closed in spaces, long term exposure in occupied spaces... I read a post or something somewhere saying that the Human Eye does not sense IR light properly and there is a potential for damaging the retina ? If that is the case I would think that wouldn't be a good idea in a pub/bar for obvious reasons, compared to being used IR outside and the bad guy is only going to be exposed to IR for a short time... .

Which Geovision Card for my application ?

andy_geovision, Thanks for the info on the PC TV output. As you know being able to use a PC TV output card is a question allot of people would be interested in. Just to clarify on those FRAME RATES GV-800-16 is rated at 120fps (total) @320*240 If 16 cams are connected and only (4) are showing motion (being recorded) instead of the frame rate being 30fps for those 4 channels- they and the idle channels frame rate is going to be 7.5fps. The 120fps being shared evenly- even though NO recording is being done, so the REAL FPS rate would be as follows: GV-800-16 , rated @ 120fps - 2008 Retail price $1,100? 4 channels =30fps 8 channels =15fps 16 channels=7.5fps So what you're saying is if you connect more cams- Rate goes down even though there is NOTHING being recorded /software isn't smart enough assign a priority to those channels ONLY sensing motion (or tripped by a alarm)? I can understand some overhead on those idle channels taking away a little- but a cam just sitting there looking at a empty room with it being set to record only when there is a event steals away FPS from channels sensing motion / in a alarm condition? BTW: I'm not talking about "real-time" viewing of cams- I'm talking about playback after a event occurs. .
  11. dynamixx, 1) There are some "freeware" and low cost packages out there - Some on this page being Trials, some being Freeware: http://search.wareseeker.com/remote-camera/ Whether they will do everything you want I do not know as I myself am new to all this "stuff". 2) On using your PC for other tasks- the more powerful your PC the better in that respect- may or may not be doable. As a example I'm running on one PC beside me CyeWeb- I think the 64 channel version, with two cams hooked up on a old D 325 Celeron 2.53ghz- 1 gig ram and it's showing on average 30 percent cpu usage. This is with the cams pointed out the window towards a tree with allot of leaves on a windy day. This PC having like a 333 /400?mz bus- and due to me finding the PC at a thrift store for $1.79 minus the HD a old crappy 20 gb hard in it... using a no-name 30fps (4) port Bt878 capture card.-cams set at 640x480. On saving to external HD- All the programs I've tried so-far can be configured as such. If you only have (1) cam you need to Google for SurveillizCam (by Novosun)-Last verison I think being v 1.6.1 ... when searching I noticed there were (2) versions (may be the same) On some download sites I think it being listed as totally free- on others it saying it was $19.95- or something like that... The totally free version is for (1) channel- and has no time limit. (AFAIK) Novosun may have it still listed on their site, but I doubt it as they seem to be promoting it under a new "name"... the "new" version of SurveillizCam has been "renamed' to CyeWeb- and I think even the (1) channel downloads are a 21-day trial- then it craps out. If you like CyeWeb given the choice and you decide to buy- I'd look at this website- It appearing to have a re-labeled version of CyeWeb (Or CyeWeb being a re-labeled version of BiKal EyeSoft.) BiKal EyeSoft http://www.bikal.co.uk/ WHY check out, buy from BiKal EyeSoft? I noticed on the BiKal EyeSoft they had allot more info on the product, have videos you can download on setting up the product and USER MANUALS you can download... CyeWeb last time I check had (1) partial page of a user manual type, it being online to boot. (No downloadable manual) Note that if your capture card uses a Brooktree Bt848, Bt849, Bt878 and Bt879 based video capture board you need to go here for info: http://btwincap.sourceforge.net/ If you have problems installing the driver go here: http://btwincap.sourceforge.net/custom.html And here! (You would be well advised to ARCHIVE a copy of this page!!!) http://www.daveandalicia.com/bt878/inst.htm Basically you run BtSpy (btspy2.0.0.zip) which probes your system... it creates a custom card profile (or template) which is used by the installer.... btwdmdrvinstaller5.3.8.zip Excerpt from http://btwincap.sourceforge.net/custom.html Steps: 1. Install your video capture card in a computer running Win95/Win98/Win98SE/WinME/Win2000 or WinXP. 2. Install the video capture drivers and applications that were BUNDLED with your card - At this point, card must be working with the manufacturer drivers. 3. Now execute the BtSpy utility (you can find it in the download section) and follow each and every of the steps the program proposes. Note that BtSpy must NOT be closed until it finishes, so, there will we times when BtSpy is running at the same time of the video capture card applications bundled with the card, so BtSpy is able to Spy those applications) 4. When BtSpy utility finishes, it has collected all the required information to create a custom card profile (or template): The card profile is displayed, and you can modify it if you need to (most users don't need to modify it). 5. Now save the profile in a safe place because you will need that profile when you install the new driver. 6. Now you can install (if you need to) your video capture card in the computer where you plan to install the new driver 7. Run the btwdmdrvinstaller5.3.8.zip driver installer: When asked for the card model, select "Custom card" (the last one), select the TV tuner model your card is using (If you don't know the TV tuner model, you will have to try several until you find one of them that lets you switch TV channels). Also, if your card is able to tune Radio, you should check the "TV tuner can natively tune Radio" box. 8. Now press "Next": The Custom card definition screen will appear. 9. The easiest way to fill the requested values is by just pressing the "Import" button, and select now the profile generated with the BtSpy utility. All the required values will be imported. Else, you will have to manually fill them using the created report and the tooltips each field displays. 10. Press the "Next" button and continue installation. 11. If the profile generated with BtSpy is right (95% of cases), then the driver should be able to handle your board without trouble. 12. Don't forget to keep a copy of the profile, as every time you install the driver, it will be needed. 13. And , if you manage to make the card work , don't forget to send the profile to me, so i can add native support for your card in the next driver release! . On the comments about DVR's being DVR's and risking them with viruses and the like... While I agree in part that having a dedicated PC... I would think with todays PC's they could do (1) channel (LOL) in the spare CPU cycles... Not everyone has a PC they can spare- and not everyone has "mission critical" needs that justifies building up a PC just for that purpose and throwing a $1,000 to $3,500+ capture card (or cards) in it - Or buying a $500 to $50,000? software package.. Some people might want a set-up just to use as a nanny cam... PS: dynamixx, Like I said I do not know if the above program will fulfill your needs. When you do find a program or programs POST BACK your findings !!! You might want to also check-out LuxRiot. One downside of the LuxRiot shareware version not being able to run it as a "service" so you have to start it manually. On the hide option..It may or may not have a hide option... (Most programs I've read about having that option though to "hide" themselves.) .

    Where to buy Geovision cards?

They use to list them all .. dont know what happened. Correct me if I'm wrong since I'm not a expert on the Geo site, or their products and this is directed towards Geo Inc as suggestions (some they may already do)... but when I'm comparing products (any product) to buy I want to: A) See high resolution pics of the products (Helpful to see what chipsets are being used- and also helpful when comparing two boards to see which one is real, and which is not if the item is cloned- As a aside- if the mfg keeps the price "decent" and doesn't rape people most people would go with the official version. B) Be able to download specs, manuals to read before the purchase. C) A table clearly listing the features- with the differences highlighted.... In other words don't clutter up the chart with words listing the features just to fill up the chart... In a product line list the base features- and then for each product list additional features beyond the base. D) The company should support legitimate cards- No matter who they are bought from. (as long as they are not stolen) What I mean is the company manufacturing the item made their money when the item was sold WHOLESALE... If the card is legit it should be supported (by the mfg) period. (Yes I know they do this to protect their dealers) I've bought NOS items from many manufacturers, once I buy the item I go to the mfg's website, type in the serial number and I'm covered...as long as that serial number has not been previously registered. E) ALL inventory in cases in which a dealer has gone out of business, should be bought back by the manufacturing company- if they do not want to honor warranties to the end-user. F) Make it easy to find resellers- You should be able to type in your zip code (or country, city code) and it pull up a listing of vendors.. Keeping (F) in mind- this would increase sales /profits for you dealers, increase Geo's sales as well. Selling more units per month means prices should come down due to economy's of scale- Neat thing about when the price comes down is you get even more sales... Customers go ahead and buy on the spot, come back for more. Make more= cheaper prices Make a limited amount=cost per unit more Cheaper prices also mean less time per customer "selling", customers backing out of deals... PS: What kind of chipsets are used on the GV-800-16 series?... I went to the Geo site, couldn't tell... Additionally are they 9 -10 bit chips? . [/b]

    Is a combo card necessary?

CollinR, Rory mentioned using multiplexer... Since I have a 16 channel multiplexer I'm trying to fiqure out if that could be used to keep down costs as my needs are for residential use in which I cannot count off thousands, upon thousands of dollars off as a "Business Expense"... like allot of businesses do on equipment. Because I am trying to keep costs down and can't count off a nickel as a tax-write-off I too would like to know if a GV800-16 card could be used with the TV OUTPUT from the PC & how the multiplexer might be used. I would think the video inouts would go thru the multiplexer first (Which would allow re-time?) then feed to via the multiplexer's loop-out ports to the GV-800-16, with the extra option to output thru the TV port of the PC? .[/b]

Any authorized seller in San Diego Area?? GEOVISION

Two observations: 1) When I go to a website looking for distributors I expect to type in my zip (or country) code - and then that page display a listing of places to BUY. I'm not a expert on Geovision's site and may have it wrong but I remember this info NOT being there- that you have to contact them first via a webform /e-mail. I don't remember the exact depth of info required but this turns off allot of people... (I don't like webforms, I'd rather send a e-mail to keep records on what has been sent/ said, be able to archive the info- use my e-mail clients spell check, etc.) 2) I see Geovision will be getting a sale, You were able to "test-out" a Geovision "type" product at a cost of what $100, instead of $5-6-800, $1,000 plus on a unproven product. (EG you don't know if it will fullfill your needs /preferences) Net result of buying a card you couldn't upgrade is you liked the product and now you are going to spend $5-6-800+/- with Geovision - With future sales more than likely... Instead of going with another card mfg. Geovision gets some sales that they probably wouldn't have got if not for that card. .
