You could check out the current draw when the heaters kick on it may be drawing down your power supply if it is not big enough.

We always run an indoor/outdoor rated cable in outside plant conduit. It has the gel and water resistance you need because in this climate (MI) you get temp change and condensation which usually means water in the conduit. The advantage of indoor/outdoor rated is it is smaller in diameter than the direct bury stuff. I think there is an outdoor rated siamese but I have not used it yet.

I am looking for a time and attendance system (small) that would allow a POS type of interface with video. I would like to have the employee clock in the time and date be displayed on a video clip/and or digital pic?
I know this is a bit off topic but I cannot seem to find any off the shelf stuff. Seems like it should be a fairly common thing that employers would want to do ???????
Thanks

Look at how the dome is set up some have a hole in the center you can then use thinwall conduit with the appropiate fittings. THe other option is to do the conduit thing but install a box on the end and mount to the metal cover that way also gives you a place for connections. A lot of MFGs have an optional base that allowes for a conduit connection.

I notice when I go to backup or delete files using the geo backup utility that the default dates are always years in the future. If you do a backup or delete the next time you go to use the utility the starting date is again starting years in the future. This does not really create a problem but does this indicate some other type of problem or potential problem

I just got a Q1 ultra samsung, check those out. It has everything I need in the field full XP, usb ports for printer ,keyboard built in wireless and bluetooth, RJ 45 net connection I bought a cheap exterior cd\dvd burner for the few times I need that to load a program the on board split keyboad is a bit hard to use but most of the time I just using the mouse anyway my fold up keyboard only takes a second to hook up if doing anything major.

We have finally got our proxim wireless system up with four PTZ cameras and I learned a few things some the hard way of course.
1. Mock up EVERYTHING in the shop get it all working and lable every piece of equipment with physical location IP address etc. Make sure you have dummy loads for the antennas as you can damage radios without them. Also be aware of RF dangers.
2. Make a spreadsheet of everything with mac address location IP etc
make copies and update if anything changes
3. Don't assume that the tecks can read.
4. Leave all the security, passwords etc in default until installed then when working turn it on all at once.
Print out those 500 page manuals. it is a pain trying to read everything from a laptop in the field.
5. call tech support early and often.
6. Have a laptop and router configured for in the field tech support also have long patch cords and crossover adaptors in case you have to physically connect to the routers or radios. I bought a cheap inverter and it will run my router and charge up the laptop.
7. Cameras Panasonic NS202A truly great camera
8. BOSCH dinion 455 IP version good camera but setting up was difficult you need the proper mix of java and active X or it will not work.
9 Proxim software has some quirks but reading the manuals solves most of the issues. Tech support is also very good.
10. Milestone software I had problems installing remote client and in talking to tech support, again very good, they told me to not install it as an ap on the server but as a service. The manual should have addressed this issue better. I have not sorted out all the settings on this software but it is not as intutive as it could be.
11. Project still has some loose ends mainly in deteriming if I have all the Access points and the backhaul running at max efficiency
12. mobil access point and a laptop work well but a sunshield or daylight viewable lcd would help.
13 I can post some pics of the radios and cameras installed if anyone wants to look at them.

Check out viking electronics they have all kinds of hardware solutions for gate entry and I think they have a device that turns on the cctv from the gate

I saw several but PI mFG shows a dvr card with 4 inputs and the linux operating system embedded on a chip Apparently you just plug in this card and you don't install any operating system files on the PC I was just wondering if this is a route to look at for some smaller systems
-
I have seen a few dvr cards advertised that have the operating system embedded on the dvr card so no operating system needed on harddrive. Are any of these good or bad ? I am needing some small gas station type setups and am considering this option. Thanks

Well most of what we do as a company in cable pulling and I am somewhat confused by the argument that pulling coax is more expensive than Cat five or six. It has been our experince that pulling coax is cheaper than cat 5, connectors are less cheapest cat 5 rj45 jacks we are willing to use ul approved etc costs about 5.00 and you need two of them.
Stranded patch cords around 2 to three dollars and you need one or two depending on how you handle the camera end.
crimp on BNC around 1.50 you can splice the coax which can be a real advantage in getting through some tough areas.
My feeling on the network vs analog agrument is I want to use the network but I don't want to be dependent on it if I can avoid it. The access control system we use sends reports updates etc to the panels but if it is down the panels keep on working as programmed. I guess the same would hold true for a DVR.

Does anyone have any tools for troublshooting GEO cards> I use and can get software hardware that will test the processors memory disk drives etc but I was wondering if their is some kind of testing product that would test the geo card to make sure all its electronics were working? It would be nice to be able to insert a card boot up the machine and see that all the geo processes were working. I know you can do that with the pc itself but It seems I spend a fair amount of time trying to sort out a pc problem vs a geo hardware issue. BTW I have only had one geo hardware problem in the last couple of years.

In order for Nero to work correctly you have to cut and paste from the Geovision backup program. If you do that you have the same file that you are viewing from viewlog. IF you make and AVI and then try to burn that to CD it sometimes will not play on other machines unless they have the geo codecs installed. You will have to cut and paste the AVI files to nero also. Check your Geo CD I think they have a step by step to make backup files.

I have a geo system 1480 with 16 audio that has started to freeze. My question is more general> 1. does geo have any hardware trouble shooting software etc that will help isolate the problem to the geo or the computer. Errors reported in windows indicated ram problems replaced that and still have the same issues. 2. Does anyone reccommend any software/hardware for trouble shooting windows hardware/software. I know there are several out there but have not used any in a while.
I am continually running into the issue of where the problem is, (geo or win) and I do not want to just start swapping out parts.
This system has been up and running for about ten months and has all the reccommended hardware etc.

check your resloution I think to record audio you have to have video set at 240x480

We have had good luck with Vitek day\night ird 30 only thing to watch is power them from and individual power supply or a multi that is isolated outputs. or you may have ground loop problems

The DSL from the service provider probably comes in over cat 3 or less. You can put your DSL router wherever you want as that can connect to your switch so you could have the switch on one end of the building and the dsl router located anywhere withing 300 feet.

Do you reccommend doing a daily reboot of geovision systems? I know how to set it up. I just wondered if most set their systems up this way. Also I have the usual 10 to 20 gig partion for os etc but do you think the systems can be affected if the storage area is filled to the point where there is only a gig or so left on the storage partions ?

I sthere any difference in baluns? i am looking at using some passive 16 port hubs to extend some cameras and I have looked at several vendors Is NVT better than VIgratron or is a balun a balun ?

That is usually used for the backbone of a cable tv feed you run rg11 and then branch off from that with taps for the indivadual drops. I would not use it as the connectors will run about 8.00 ea and you will need special crimpers for this probably one time use.
