The domes look much better aesthetically. They're much more low-profile. The M-series looks like something that belongs in a prison. You also can't readily determine the FOV of the D-series by looking at the dome, whereas that's easily determined with the M-series, and the camera avoided by a subject. The ability to separately aim the imagers in the D-series is also a huge bonus, and allows one to cover several areas with a single dome. The M-series has more ability to aim its PIR sensor... where the dome is fairly restricted on the area the PIR will cover. As for illuminators, I'm a much bigger fan of external IR, separate from the camera by at least a couple of feet. It will keep the bugs/spiders/etc away from your lenses.

Mobotix really needs a true day/night ICR-equipped camera. Their stuff rocks in pretty much every other way... but having to choose either day OR night (but not both) is a major limitation... dual-imager models notwithstanding.

Of course. FLIR has been at the thermal-imaging game far longer than Mobotix.

The Ubiquiti stuff is excellent for these types of setups... and the price is nice too.

You need actual sensors, like the aforementioned Optex or Crows. Video motion-detection sucks. Dedicated sensors are MUCH more reliable for alerts.

Prosumer enthusiast here. I got into it when one of my neighbors turned out to be a violent felon... and I travel for work. I wanted to know that my family was OK while I was gone. It snowballed from there.

And the latest firmware published for the KCM-5311E (at the end of July) STILL doesn't have SD-card local recording enabled. I should point out that this camera came out at the beginning of the year.

What are the specs on the camera itself?

It does NOT work yet on the KCM-7111 and KCM-7211... I have one of each installed, and neither of them support local storage. The release notes for the most current firmware clearly state: "Remark 1. SD Card Storage reserved for support in future firmware versions." Just FYI.

Well... it appears the SD-card recording is NOT enabled yet for the KCM-5311's... So it's back to vaporware. I have an application in mind for the camera that requires on-board recording. Good thing it's largely experimental, and not any sort of rush-job.

So Acti SD-card recording isn't vaporware anymore? It's about time... I've had one of their KCM-5311's for >6 months now, waiting for that updated firmware. Will have to see if it actually works. (I still think Mobotix sets the standard for on-board recording)

I managed to get an Aircam working with Luxriot. Interesting cameras, but a decidedly "cheap" feel. They're very lightweight plastic. But what do you expect for $100 bucks? Honestly, for what it costs, it's not a bad little camera. The daytime picture is quite reasonable.

Absolutely not. Either one is a criminal or they are not, rich or poor. I lived out of my car at one point, and I never even considered stealing. Went without food many days, and yet did not steal. Haitians here are some of the most poverty stricken people in the world, yet they dont steal. If you were to ask a thief why they steal, I bet you will find its for reasons other than food. And wretchedly poor people often have VERY direct ways of expressing their displeasure with thieves... many of whom, if caught in-the-act, are lucky to escape with their lives.

There's quite a leap from petty theft because you're hungry (which I'd be inclined to simply make the person pay back) to the kinds of thefts we're talking about. A serial residential burglar isn't robbing from houses because he's "hungry"... he's doing it because he's somebody who would rather steal from others than earn it himself. We have homeless shelters where hungry people can get fed every day... you just have to be sober. I simply won't accept the "bb-b-b-but I was hungry" excuse from an able-bodied adult who COULD go out and get a job. It might not be a job they WANT, but at that point, you don't have that luxury. Picking up trash or sweeping floors might offend your dignity, but at least you're working. Many of those guys could work, they just don't want to. And there is dignity in ANY kind of work, if you take pride in it and do a good job. I deal with the homeless every day in my line of work. That "will work for food" sign is almost always a lie.

Poverty doesn't cause crime. And as an American, I have to say that we have the richest "poor people" in the world, but part of the problem is the class-resentment that's preached by the poverty pimps, who tell lower-income residents that they're poor because some stinking rich guy "stole" from them. Complete tripe. They are not poor because somebody else is rich... they never had any money to begin with, so how was it stolen from them? People should rise or fall on their own merits, and stupid SHOULD hurt... the discipline of failure is one of the better ways to learn. I'm reminded of this quote from Robert Heinlein: I'm not a great fan of Heinlein, but that quote is very appropriate when we start talking about the politics of envy and jealousy.

Power supplies are a common point-of-failure in any electronic system. To not have replacements available for purchase is completely unsatisfactory.

Compared to GB, home burglary is a VERY dicey proposition in the United States. Particularly in the South.
