Do cables matter ?

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

On my domestic setup i have used audio cables with RCA plugs for all the runs from cams to DVR.

The distances vary from 2 Metres to 5 Metres and are all indoor under the carpets.

Assuming im using medium resolution domestic cameras 480 lines and mostly small board type lenses (CS on one cam) ... is it going to improve quality much by switching to BNC plugs and proper co-ax cables ?

cheers Chris.

For that short of cable runs you probably wont see much of a difference but on long cable runs, I imagine that you would.

^What Sean said. It's not in the connectors, so much as the cable - video frequencies travel best on wire with 50-ohm impedance, like RG59 or RG6. Your audio cable probably comes nowhere close to that; cable impedance really isn't a big factor at audio frequencies.
