8-Channel DVR - 9th Black/Blank Box

Recommended Posts

Hello.

I have an 8-channel digital video surveillance recorder, but there is a ninth, black/blank box.

Is this normal? If it is, could anyone explain its purpose?

Thanks in advance.

(I may have placed this in the wrong section.)

It's normal. In order for the multiple cameras to show normal shape and size (ie. 4:3 aspect ratio), the screen has to be divided into equal segments... that means 2x2 (4 channels), 3x3 (9 channels), 4x4 (16 channels), and so on. Since there are only 8 inputs, one of the channels simply remains blank.

Many DVRs sold have 9 inputs.

If you were to open up the DVR you would probably see traces for a 9th input. Its probably disabled in software though.

Is it possible to find software to allow me to use a ninth input/camera where the blank box is?

Or once disabled, is this no longer possible?

Would I need to get a new box altogether?
